It's possible whoever decided who would be coming knew a little bit about Mathilde as the leader of the research project. Because sure, there's probably some mages who would be better at helping the project, but it seems a bit on the nose that they sent someone who both can help at least some, and has points of commonality that makes Mathilde exceptionally suited among humans to work with him. Namely her history in managing surly ancient magical experts called "the Grim", and her history of messing up Greenskins.

I am pretty sure he is going to come and tell us not to mess with the waystones. We should ignore him because frankly a lot of the parties involved will not care. Ulthuan supports Marienburg which leaves the Empire somewhat miffed let's say. Kislev does not care and wants a way to push back the chaos wastes. The Eonir well there history with Ulthuan is not the best to say. The hedgewise I do not really see caring. The dawi would tell the wazzuk to go home. Really only the colleges would care and not that much unless papa Telic comes back.

Or he could go another way and look to join. Which frankly we would have to gouge him for everything we can get. At least 2 members of the project would dislike working with Ulthuan.

Prince Eltharion is known as "The Grim", after his entire family and most of his people were slaughtered by Grom the Paunch.

He is mainly known for his immense hatred of Greenskins and being completely humourless and serious at all times. When he appears in the Defenders of Ulthuan/Sons of Ellyrion novels (which Boney may or may not be using) he is depicted as blunt to the point of rudeness, treating any strangers with constant suspicion and barely giving once-close acquaintances so much as the time of day.
KRAGG 2??????? SEQUEL CONFIRMED????!?!!!!

Eonir society seems like it is set to undergo several major changes in the coming decades, and in each of them the hand of the Queen seems to be at work, moulding the eventual shape of the society to come.

Gods, I really hope this doesn't blow up in her face.

Great update, glad my insomnia woke me up early for it. God talk is always fun, and it was much more interesting to see the Eonir reactions to the Empire than I expected. "The City of Ghur" thing was really interesting, Altdorf really is a wild and savage city.

I wonder if Mathilde was picked to meet Eltharion because she's the Waystone project leader, or because she has proven experience in managing older, surly magical experts.

It is hitting me again how seriously the Emperor is treating this, jumping immediately to the fastest "get over here right now" possible by just posting in Azyr Global Chat and hoping Hubert will see it right away and pass it along.

It's even bigger than that, anyone can read Signs in the Stars. It's just that the Celestials are some of the most likely people to be looking up there and know what to look for.

I dunno how much Eike's gonna 'resonate' with Shyalla as a supporter in terms of having a good defence against chaos fuckery.

Being a supporter is an entierly valid path and I support it if that's how Eike wishes to approach her faith, but I'm still a bit worried.

If the oppertunity ever arises I'd like to ask Ranald to keep the occasional eye out for her like he would one of his priests, if we're ever owed a small favour from him again.

Every mage on the continent that doesn't keep up with college news: who the hell is Mathilde and why is her name ruining my view
I have to assume that the message board of the night sky is always somewhat crowded. Too many mages who might have reason to want to send messages quickly even if the method isn't secure.

Quick copy-paste of the description of Signs in the Stars taken from the wiki:

Signs in the Stars - Manipulates the Wind of Azyr to write a subtle message in the stars. The message is not detailed and can only serve to communicate complex ideas if the caster and the one they intend to receive the message have discussed the signs said-caster intends to send in advance ("One if by land, two if by sea," for example). In order to recognise and interpret the sign in the stars thus inscribed, those searching for it must attempt to study the stars. In fact, anyone who looks at the sky can make such an examination to realise a sign in the stars has been inscribed. Without knowledge of what the caster intends to communicate, however, the meaning cannot easily be divined. That said, there is something of a "language" of signs in the stars known to Celestial Wizards and others who study the heavens. By placing signs in the stars in or near certain constellations or regions of the sky at certain times, it is possible to communicate danger, opportunity, and similar concepts, and to associate them with certain regions of the world, certain gods, or certain races. It would be possible to communicate "There is doom for men this day," for example, or "Fate will smile on Sigmar's followers when the sun rises." The wizard lords of the Celestial College frown upon those who scribe signs in the stars unnecessarily and mete out unpleasant punishments on those they believe used this powerful magic lightly or pointlessly.

To get a complex message of "Mathilde, get over here to meet an envoy from Ulthuan, his name is [encrypted]" inscribed, it had to have been written by a powerful wizard—possibly even Maria herself.

Also good to see Hubert is not slacking on his stargazing. I know he doesn't resonate that well with that aspect of his wind, but it's still an important part of being a Celestial—especially since he is officially employed as an envoy, and carrying messages is a significant part of his job.

Now I wonder just how much Celestial star gazing is looking at the future and how much is just keeping track of the world wide rumor mill. The Celestial College might frown upon those who scribe signs in the stars unnecessarily and mete out unpleasant punishments on those they believe used this powerful magic lightly or pointlessly, but I doubt the elves care what they think.

Fantastic update, well worth the wait. I of course love Eike so there's basically little I can say beyond 'you do you, young one'. The Eonir tourist section is fascinating - it really must seem overwhelming to live in a single place your entire life and then be awed at a complete change in territory - like how people sometimes go to Ohio or wherever and are stunned at how flat the place is. The bit about Altdorf is... honestly, I think I'd also get lost in a city that's been drenched in Ghur for so long too. And the bits about Taal and Kurnous and Isha are tantalizing...

But that last bit really takes the cake. For a moment there I confused Imrik with Eltharion in my head, so I just sort of swore at the nonsense that would happen, but Eltharion is more reasonable. He is likely to be really skeptical of humans messing with waystones, but he more than any other Prince of Ulthuan is likely to have appreciated the spreading of Waaaghbane - he might give us the benefit of the doubt more than any other human.

I guess we shall see how aggressive the initial meeting goes.

Haven't we reached the point where even if we did pull out all the Waystone project individual partners may well be able to cobble one together?
Either they can make what they need, or now that they know what they need they could make individual deals.

Kinda kills any attempt to put the genie back in the bottle.
The asur have no way of knowing that the project depends on Mathilde being a trusted middlewoman to work with, so an argument against dissolving the project might be 'what can Uluthan pay each of the non-empire particpants to all stop working on this?'

Regardless of how any of this turns out, I am firm in my position that Bretonnia should be taught the tributary creation rituals, price negotiable.

Not that making tributaries actualy involves interacting with the network, but just wanted to mention.
KRAGG 2??????? SEQUEL CONFIRMED????!?!!!!
Lets steal a boat and give it to him. A fancy one.

One of those Black Arks that people seem to be so interested in.

That's the sort of thing that worked for Kragg 1.
