Boney if the final spell design heavily incorporates either fog or mist (Maybe they appear from fog or mist, or are limited to manifesting inside of the fog or mist that Mathilde summons) will Mathilde's staff of mistery have a impact on the difficulty of the spell?
no. an integral part of a spell must be mist or fog for the staff to have an effect. otherwise, it's just a non-mist spell with some fancy special effects.

Mathilde on how to maintain good relations with your Red Rider Apparitions:
"Just use one of their variations whenever someone else would use a Pendulum or a Pit and you're good. You can get away with Burning Shadows and Shadow Knives, but they'll get a little huffy if you do. Magic Bolt will warrant a flat stare of disappointment."
 
I don't think a rider would have helped against the daemon at vlag... Because we barely had space on that daemon/dragon Sandwich... Trying to put a man on a horse up there would be interesting.

It won't for this spell due to the fundamental structure of how the spell is made. The process of binding would have to be made mist themed by its foundation and not depend on Gehenna's techniques in order for possible applicability to occur.

Then that was about a theoretical entirely new spell that would need to be built from scratch, rather than being able to piggyback off the Gehenna's Golden Hounds techniques. Mathilde will be creating a basic 'deploy critter from me with instructions' spell as part of this process that will not be mist-themed and may or may not be Battle Magic.

This one is for sure not gonna win but I wanted to vote for it because I believe that creating a potentially Cataclysm-Level Spell would end up resulting in +1 Magic. I may be misremembering but I believe that the QM did say it before that to up our Magic we need to used it more and do more extreme things it it.

Also; having a Kage Bunshin army of Mathilde sounds cool as all hell too. :grin:

But really, I feel like having triple power is better than relying on a chance, again, a chance of a lower difficulty spell. I understand misgivings regarding lance or band, but I feel like the chance of FC is treated like a certainty, and that is just wrong.

You say this like Windherding isn't trailblazing an entirely unexplored and dangerous endeavor that's constantly risking Dhar backlash
At least with Battlemagic there's an established population of casters that have experience doing it "safely"
Windherding has a single proof of concept under it's belt, and that very nearly went horribly wrong before Mathilde grounded the Miscast

I like Windherding for the record, but at some point it's started to really bother me that Battlemagic in particular gets treated as the unacceptable risk, when Mathilde does all sorts of risky stuff on the regular, that could just as easily have gotten herself killed
She could have been killed with no chance of a save diving down into a boat not all that long ago, had a single roll gone differently
I feel a big part of the difference here is that when Mathilde Windherds --- or works with things like the Aetheric Vitae back before we got comfortable for that matter --- she does so one action at a time and so takes on risks on a case by case basis.

Even the Dawizuforki moment and risks that came with it was something we as players chose, in that moment. IIRC we weren't quite up to speed with exactly how much fire we were playing with until the roll came down, but it was a thing we chose to do then, there, for that case, and afterwards chose to stop.

I think a big part of the the difference with delving into Battle Magic, by contrast, is a sense that the capability comes with a much more permanent risk that we're accepting into Mathilde's day to day life, or really battle to battle life. It's a set of spells we'll know, and afterwards will never not know. In that, there's a qualitative difference in the risk that's being taken, not just a matter of degree, or aesthetic factors. I'm not sure how many others feel that way, but it seems to be a notable factor for me at least.

For what it's worth and going back to your previous point, if we end up One Rider spell ends up being low battle magic I would be happy to accept the risk, but then, as I said before, the biggest reason I'm voting for a one apparition spell is because it's the Dämmerlichtreiter, singular. Now that we're going down that road I want to play that theme to the hilt see what comes out the other end.

Rider is the wrong apparition for bodyguard.
And part of the whole rider thing was ability to actually fuck people up without having to go into melee range, which bodyguard is severaly limited as.

Charge and Duel are just more effective as combat spells, and bodyguard is at its best in situations where you are least likely to actually have used it, or most likely to not want a dude on horse.

So yeah, excuse you but I'm gonna call the Bodyguard massively more useful than the charge, especially since its safer to cast One Bodyguard repeatedly ahead of time than it is to cast a Lance Charge in combat.
Oh, please. Casting one bodyguard repeatedly requires us to spend AP for each Bodyguard we capture and bind. That will most likely never happen !
Realistically it's a choice between one bodyguard or a group of fighters who best suit the Dammerlichtreiter's form. The tactical utility of a charge is excellent, it'll be the safest Grey Attack BM, and by your logic we can spend an action to make a better-suited Bodyguard Apparition.

Yeah, in the Kul Encampment fight, the melee lasted long enough that the narrative noted Mathilde had several opportunities to recast her passive buff spells (Cloud of Confusion, Dread Aspect, Shroud of Invisibility). Even just a bodyguard lasting several tens of minutes would have been amazing there.
I think he'd have died almost instantly actually. Mathilde could go invisible and regularly reposition, but he's just a horseman who needs Mathilde's effort and attention to hide and redeploy.

@Boney, would a Rider be affected by our Cloud of Confusion ?
 
Re: the argument that we have better 'fuck that group over there' spells

We only do, if we actually learn those battlemagic spells. As you can see from the current debate, this isnt certain at all. So it is very possible that we do not actually have any such spell. (a spell that we refuse to learn is effectively one that doesnt exist in our lineup)
