My local library had a bunch of activities to promote literacy in children. Teaching them to read, and introducing them to books and such. It also held similar activities for those that weren't fluent in the native language to help them get a grasp on it.

I'm not sure if the K8P library would have similar things going on but it's something to keep in mind. My non-existent experience of being a librarian has strongly indicated that it isn't all technical work.

Shouldn't the 'We' be called 'Wir' instead since our MC is a not-german?

I know enough about German to stay away from anything that might require me to use its definite articles.

Huh, aparently magic is particulate (strandulate?), interesting. I don't think thats ever come up before.

2e Realms of Sorcery talks about magic in terms of strands a lot, including power stones being a single strand folded back on itself over and over until it solidifies.

Is there a reason they aren't going under Karagril? Is it just because Nar is the designated non-dawi karak?

I meant Karagril, fixed.

Okay, I've been looking at some maps, and I think Mordhiem and Castle Drakenhoff are directly North/South of each other, which means there could have been a leyline running between the two places. That means that there could be a waystone network in Sylvania that was under the control of the Vampires, and would probably explain why the existing waystones have done jack about removing the latent Dhar across the land.

It would not an the very notion would be alien to all involved. It is the early modern age, books are often chained to the shelves and unless you are some kind of noble the librarians are unlikely to let children near them, because of their sheer value and the fact that children cannot be trusted near them.

One thing that should be kept in mind in regards to the We is in terms of security, because their very nature would make it next to impossible for someone to infiltrate the library and get access to some of the more restricted books.

Anyone who wants to get their hands on a book they shouldn't would have to deal with a hivemind of giant spiders who likely know exactly where every book is and could be anywhere in a 3 dimensional space.

It makes it really damn hard to take anything you shouldn't.

Now on a more research orientated side of things I predict the We sort of developing a memory of the contents of almost every book in the library, which means that once they get the hang of it they would be extremely good at telling you exactly which book you are looking for if you want specific information.

You receive a round of agreeing nods in response.
We've got sensible co-workers.

Also, imagine if we (thread) still had our Egrimm paranoia when it turns out that the very cornerstone of Waystone operation is Dhar fueled.

Pitchforks. Pitchforks and torches, that's what.
He purses his lips in thought. "And maybe have the letters informing their Magisters Patriarch left on their respective desks, rather than sent directly to wherever they are right now. Anything else?"
I have deeply underestimated the good sir. May he have many years left.
You sketch out a device with which you could hold eight power stones equidistant from a central point, and on that point careful measures of Vitae could be dropped and detonated and allowed to congeal on the power stones before the next measure is introduced. Then you work on a device to automatically deliver and detonate those measures, because that seems like a long and tedious process to do manually, and then measure the viscosity of the Vitae so you're able to sketch out a set of tubes dripping Vitae into a Cup of Verena that should allow the entire process to be automated. Over a number of days, eight power stones plus eight gallons of Vitae should result in something the Colleges thought impossible: the creation of entirely new Orbs of Sorcery.
There was a lot of incoherent screaming and pacing in my apartment to these news. A lot of it.
Gods above and below.

LET'S
FUCKING
GOOOOOOOO

[X] The We

Meanwhile....

[X] Cython

Memes aside, Cython comes with a lot of problems... but understated I feel is the massive prestige boost we'd get from him, basically immediately. Our acquisitions dealings would be hotroded by the derg if we played that right. The reduction in control of the library, and the potential erosion of its mission long-term are still a big ask though - making sure that Cython will be committed to not just the safety and growth but also accessibility and stewardship of the collection long after we're gone will be a long-term project. What an amazing guarantee of longevity it would be if we make it stick, though...

I do still prefer spider librarians as a matter of them being the highest of high end options imaginable as far as actual operation of the place goes once they're fully trained up, though Cython would be hella awesome too. Work, yes, but it's work that puts adorable spider friends on screen so this is actually a plus if you think about it. :V

That said, we didn't do this library just to have a legacy. We did it to be fucking awesome.

So I say we go for one of the fucking awesome options.

On the Orb of Sorcery topic... We (apparently) have 18 gallons of AV. It takes 8 to make a set of Orbs.
Clearly the only option is to get enough power crystals to make 2 sets without advertising anything, and then dump all 16 Orbs on the Colleges all at once.

This is... mostly? a joke.

Or we could turn around after the first set and go "Give me 8 more power stones and a week and I'll make another set," to get to watch the colleges climb over themselves to get the stones out of storage.

Also… once we've had fun with Algard I sorta want to give the others away in ironically prankish ways. Show up at gold college disguised as a snake oil salesman and reveal suddenly Orb of Sorcery to sell. Hide one at the bottom of Dragomas strangely large soup bowl for lunch. Buried in the Jades' rose garden. Drop the Celestials' out of the sky. Leave the Whites on their front desk with a note 'you lost this'.

Tangentially, how durable are Orbs?

Just imagine someone trying to inflitrate by disguising themselves as a librarian. :V

True. That was written up shortly before the vote opened and my expectations were off the mark. I still expect disappointment from the We/Cython fans though, but maybe to a lesser degree than when Cython lost the relationship vote.
I somehow managed to contain my extreme salt at the "tell Ranald about our Vitae discovery" vote despite the topic somehow becoming 90% of thread discussion for weeks on end once people started trying to guess who the daughters were. Not that I care about who the daughters are either, so reading the thread got a lot less interesting for a while. I'm sure I'll manage to keep quiet if we get slightly fewer We/Cython interactions, and would appreciate fewer "I predict X voters will be salty" comments in a quest where relitigating old votes has so far been very very rare.

Master Thief: "So I just got to steal some book from a library? Easy."
*Arrives only to find that the Library is staffed by giant spiders*
Master Thief: "I may have errored."

Also on the subject of Orbs of Sorcery I sort of want Mathilde to walk into Algard's office, drop a really old looking chest she bought on his desk and open it to reveal the Ulgu Orb. Then casually says she has more to deliver to the other colleges.

Why yes, dragon librarians are one of my fetishes, how did you know? :V

But on a less joke-y note. This goes towards one of the older comparisons between humans and mythical races in fantasy settings.

"Humans, who are short-lived, create institutions. Elves, who live millenia, take up personal charges." The old adage that when humans want to protect something they create a Knight Order to pick up their duty when they die. While an elf who decides he wants to protect a forest will literally do that out of his own personal decision.

So Cython, I understand, is an extremely finnicky pick. If he wants to do it, and take up this charge as his own, this will go very well.

However, if he wants to do it it will be because he so desires, in the sense that he will become personally involved. So like Mathilde already predicted, he will see himself as an equal partner. He will (eventually) grow to care and love that library as his own hoard.

That might sting, at first glance. To think that the library that we are building is already being "claimed" by another as their own, even before it is opened.

But lo, I invite you to look at the rewards. Immortality is not in Mathilde's plans (even if she has the means to reach it, theoretically, thanks to a certain black book). Cython, on the other hand, will see this done for a very, very, very long while.

The library is already in a Karak, so we already ticked the "have dwarves build something with your name on it" box of immortality prerequisites. Let us tick the second "dragon memorializes us" box.

[X] Cython

I'm sorry, just dragon library. Also I want to see their face when we basically gift them a mountain's worth of book hoard and tell them that absolute protection is desired.

Also I really want to make a staff with an Orb of Sorcery. Just because we can.
