It occurs to me that if Mandred were doing Ranaldite miracles, one of the miracles available would be Hammerspace.

Hammerspace, with the Hammer of Sigmar.

It would be comical... but unfortunately, putting something like the Hammer of Sigmar in Ranald's hands is probably asking for trouble.

She is a manipulator and a gambler, but now, when it is time to throw the biggest gamble of her life, she would be using her son as the stake, and she has found out that she might not be able to.
I don't think she feels she might not be able to gamble with her son as a chip. She is absolutely able to do it, and you can see how she can justify it to herself:
I've been thinking about this ever since I noticed it, and it's not fretting about it I've been doing. I've been looking forward to it. I should be worried for my son, and don't get me wrong, I am, but more than that I'm looking forward to what might happen.
Part of me keeps saying that he's not a chip I should be anteing, but another part of me keeps saying that he's already in the game and this just gives him one more tool to play it with.
but she has enough presence to realize that this might be wrong, and so she is asking for a second opinion from someone she trusts.

Also, I would like to remind everyone that the possibility of Mandred becoming an Anointed of Ranald isn't even mentioned by Heidi. When she talks about betting on Mandred she talks about letting him be a wizard:
And even if it comes out in the worst way and it ruins any chance of him being Emperor, he's still going to be the next Grand Prince of Reikland, and we've had a hundred Emperors and thousands of Elector Counts but never a Wizard Elector, and that could do so much. The Empire would still have Marienburg if we trusted Wizards more, and Mandred could fix that.
If we vote wizard then we are telling Heidi to take the bet. If we vote priest we are telling Heidi to take an entirely different bet, one she hasn't even considered. The "safe" option, the one that doesn't add another gamble on top of the massive gamble that Mandred is already a part of, is Nullify. At least in Heidi's opinion, in Mathilde's opinion that "safe" option comes at the cost of mutilating Mandred.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not voting for Nullify and I would rather either of the other two options win. But if you think that the good parenting move here would be to avoid risking Mandred further, and want Mathilde to advice Heidi accordingly, you should vote for Nullify.

Actually, that is a thing to think about.

While the provinces and their electers are all 'equals' some are very much more equal then others.

if we were going to give each a rank among provinces, e.g Miltery/Navy, economy ?/10, Population ?/10, influence ?/10 etc.

where would each one be at.

like, the easy ones are Reikland and Middland, canonically the most powerful ones and Hochland, the smallest and least influential.

but what about the others?
It would take a lot of examination and time spent analysing, but I would actually rate Ostland as the lowest, below even Hochland, because while Hochland is very small, it's not nearly as plagued by problems as Ostland. It's just mediocre and average in most areas, which is a benefit.

Wissenland is very high up there because of Nuln and the place being the industrial centre of the Empire. It's one of the most urbanised areas and provides a ton of the raw materials and minerals needed for maintaining the place.

Middenland is powerful millitary wise but I would like to mention that economy and population wise they wouldn't be leading. Middenland is one of the most road heavy provinces in the Empire, with riverine access not nearly as prominent. Their major city doesn't even have any rivers running up to it, so you have to take one of the four major thoroughfares to get there. Combine that with the harsh conditions of the place and it makes population and economic concerns more significant than usual. Especially with the whole Ulrican self sufficiency thing hampering their development in some areas.

Talabecland is very high up. Incredibly large landmass, one of the tamer forests and tons of natural resources to harvest. Tons of rivers and roads and its central point making it the highway of the Empire. There's a reson the Feurbachs have such a high chance of being Emperors. They also have religous and military prominence. They might lack some of the technological developments of Wissenland and Reikland and the sheer ferocity of Middenland, but they make up for it by being the central landmass integral to travel.

Ostermark has recently had a serious turn in fortunes. It's one of the eastern provinces, which have been historically poor and impoverished in comparison to their western cousins, but the new canal, their connections to Karak Kadrin and High Pass, their connections to Kislev, and their trade prominence provide a significant boost to their status. Combine that with the prosperity of their Veldt making it the most prominent grazing ground for horses in the Empire aside from Averland, and all the minerals and resources provided by the mountains and their vital shipbuilding services, and they're actually pretty up there.

Nordland is extremely unfortunate as of late due to obvious reasons. They're losing the majority of their strengths and even their best towns are on edge at the moment. Their primary saving grace is the Second Imperial Navy and their importance in maintaining the defences of the Empire's shores since Ostland certainly can't do it.

Averland is pretty up there overall. It's less advanced than some other states and it does have to deal with incursions from Black Fire Pass, but their dominance over the route gives them a strong trading presence and they are the breadbasket of the Empire. Combine that with their mining and horse raising and they're one of the most vital provinces for maintaining the Empire's status, albeit an often overlooked one because they're not as "sophisticated" as Nulners and Altdorfers.

We're well acquainted with Stirland. It had a lot of potential, but it was squandered and left to waste and was one of the worst off of the provinces until just recently. Now, it's shaping up to be another crossroads of the Empire similarly to Talabecland, and it's fortunes are likely to be overturned. So far it's pretty middling. Getting better, but not quite there yet.

I didn't read it this way at all. Heidi is probably the best liar/manipulator we've seen so far in the entire story : even if her feelings are entirely real, her calling Mathilde a friend as opposed to her previous "ally/friend of friend" status doesn't have to mean much. My first guess was "ah, now that you're asking for a favor we're friends!"
We barely know this woman outside of shared interests, and Mathilde's Diplomacy is probably so much lower than Heidi's that she can lie to us easily.
This is Heidi's divided loyalties coming to a head.
Her Son's future vs Her Ranaldite caper?

You're his godmother, you're a Wizard, and you have a more well-rounded relationship with our God than I do. And you're the only one, apart from Him, that I can talk to about this. Please, give me your advice."

Heidi sounds worried and desperate and maybe a little frightened here. I think this is the most genuine we've ever seen her, and the fact that she picked us to speak too shows just how much she trusts us—she literally has no else to confide in, except maybe for Ranald himself. We might be the only friend she has.

Is she a conwoman? Sure. But she's also a mother who cares very deeply about her son, a son who's future is uncertain and she doesn't know whether it's right to use him as a pawn in her own schemes the same way she uses herself, or if she should let him find his own path, or if she should try to protect him from all the dangers of the world, no matter what that might cost them both.

Becoming an anointed of Ranald is too much—we'd be asking a seven year old boy to keep a secret that could cost him everything should it be found out, and I can't see how it would benefit him at all. Similarly, there are too many risks associated with nullifying his magic, and makes him a tempting target for the darker cults out there—more so than being the Emperors son would, at least.

But becoming a wizard? Not only would he find a home of like minded fellows in one of eight institutions that fit the person he is, but it would offer him both protection and power at the cost of a minor reputation hit, and one that gives him lots of allies.

Lets face it—Ranald's gamble to get one his followers onto the throne failed. Instead of trying to salvage that, however, we should seek out a new gamble—that of the Empire's first Wizard Elector, one of the ten most powerful people in the empire who has both the motive and ability to prevent another siege of the colleges and to normalise magic.

It's the route that gives Mandred the most freedom over his future (which college will he pick? What type of wizard will he become?) without forcing him to hide his true self at all.

So, greys are good, but have a distressing tendency to disappear when you aren't looking at them, and I don't think the count's bodyguard will like that very much.

Celestial is obviously the best choice.

A degree of foresight is *gold* in a ruler- even if it's big picture stuff like crop failures, floods, or increased raids in an area, having everyone giving you information aware that you have a direct, personal, undetectable way of cross checking is a very serious check against distorting anything. And better than truth-telling, because ignorant cut-outs can't be used as a way around.

So. That's 80% of the job, the peacetime side.

On the war front, being able to throw lighting bolts without getting close, to use flight to escape ambushes, and have mage armor on at all times regardless of how he is dressed makes him one of the hardest to kill emperors right off the bat.

Plus celestials are the college with the most connections and interactions with the nobles, so he gets a wonderful set of back channel communications in the bag.
I suspect that a reputation for being able to see the future might be more valuable for a politician than the ability to see the future itself. Everyone is just less inclined to question your decisions.

[X]Ranald
Mandred should be fully inducted into the Cult of Ranald and taught to wield His power, and taught to keep anyone else from finding out he has the capacity to do so.

[X] Wizard
I'm going to vote wizard because wizards are awesome. Despite how dangerous it can be.

Thst said if Ranald wins I won't be to disappointed because if it works it's the kind of things that legends are made of. It would be one of Ranalds masterpiece and fit all his faces gambler for the risk of it all, deceiver for the amount of deception needed, nifhtprowler because they basically stole an entire empire, and possibly protector cause once Mandred is empire I'd assume he would have to protect it.

The update was certainly written in a way that tugs on those heartstrings, but I'd wear the nullifers myself every time. Magic is terrible and in an ideal world no one would be a wizard. (Mathilde doesn't feel that way, but I sure do!)
It doesn't apply as much in Mandred's case, but Mathilde can-and-has made the case that her life is far and away better with magic than it would have been without, even with the risk.

[X] Wizard
If the Empire's yet to have an or even multiple wizard-counts in it's history, one in charge of Reikland would still be an immense accomplishment while not being quite as radical.

[X] Wizard
Honestly I think this is an even better outcome than a Ranaldian Emperor. In any case, nullifiers would be a weakness in the Emperor, worse than him not having magic at all because it's a weakness his enemies WILL exploit. A priest is doubling down when you've already made a great profit- a good gambler knows when to put down the dice. Especially when it involves the life of her son and a potential civil war.

Bonus points: Encourage Heidi to take up the mantle of the protector.

Also, going priest of Sigmar would be betraying Ranald.

So should we persuade Luitpold (via Heidi) to put his weight behind giving the Colleges an Electoral Vote before, or after it emerges that his son is a Wizard? :)
Leverage can be painfully dated and provincial, and it's very blatantly "American Liberalism" in its perspective so if that's a deal-breaker then I would strongly recommend against it, but it's probably one of the best examples of "someone took a tabletop roleplaying game campaign and just made it into television" around.
Hah, yeah, pretty good description all round.
Then it was also turned back around into a quite inventive role-playing game about a decade ago. Neat mechanics around e.g. the flashback trick reveals in the show, and ways to get around huge over-planning that similar heist genre games like Cyberpunk/Shadowrun could be prone to.
