As usual, it's morning and Boney updated after I went to sleep so I don't have time to go through the thread yet. For the moment, I'll just make an interim vote and say what convinced me - order of priorities is protect the empress first, networking second, "who deserves it" never because they all do and the longshanks are getting the lion's share regardless from being the ones actually on the ground and seen doing the thing.
[X] The Order of Light
Magister Matriarch- oops, you mean Lady Magister Mira of the Order of Light directed your attention here. Her getting the credit will shore up her position in the Light Order even more, and neatly extricate yourself from the matter.
This is our cover story. Leaning into that is extremely good - and provides a neat red herring for Alric to latch on to, since he isn't even aware of that. Also most directly provides political grist for use on the waystones project.
[X] The Templars of Sigmar
The information they provided demonstrated the value of a good relationship with the Holy Order of the Templars of Sigmar, and them getting the credit means that any attempts by others to investigate the matter further will run into an unyielding wall.
As a focus of people's inquiries they're a wall, though Veekie has made a case for it drawing a lot of suspicion, too. That said, the people who know about the people who actually know any of the details is vanishingly small in the first place: of the light order, a few besides Mira might know we met with Mira, and only Mira will know that we were sent to look into what Alric was doing. Our old mentor is tight lipped and fewer people will know of his direct involvement than they will of ours, considering we were the ones to organize the longshanks.
And the Longshanks themselves are thankful enough to us to offer the choice of official story, they're not going to chafe against it. "Mathilde was there" and "our target looked like this" is all they know, and the latter is basically public info already, but the info to connecting it to the actual identity of the target is itself locked up in the very same temple this option calls an unyielding wall. Someone would have to come at it from the other end - already knowing about Alberich and realizing the woodcut is of him - but there's little we could do about such a person if they turned their attention here.
Attributing it to the Templars of Sigmar would, however, be more likely to draw their attention here if such a person does exist and is inclined to do so, as Veekie pointed out.
Also, doesn't mesh with our cover story to our mentor as well, but again, dude's tight lipped and didn't much care about our stated reason anyways. He's good for it.
Lastly, as others have said: Building a positive connection to these folks is hard for a Wizard, and they proved their worth hard. This operation would have failed without those woodcuts. So, they're on my shortlist too.
