Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
For those voting for the temple, note that it might be hard to shadowport with all those glowing barriers around. The rose maze on the other hand, appears to be made largely of greenery, so both Zhengui and Hanyi are likely to do well in it.

Kang Zihao
Finally, I finished it!!! God there are several parts I didn't like about this but it's more or less how I pictured him and his smug look

Here's Kang Zihao everybody (and his dog, not wolf cause it didn't fit)

I modelled the dog after a Kunming wolfdog and the armor from looking at Chinese dramas. If I were to insert the wolf though, I would made it look very rabid to indicate its wild nature

Now I gotta hurry up and do RL business now

@yrsillar one for today

How does it go... 'Thanks for the update'? ... Anyway, I liked this part. It had some cool fluff about Arts, I missed that a little in the last updates. We also get to see some more of Ling Qi's Spirit Menagerie and Hanyi is quickly becoming one of my favourites. And, of course, the start of Ling Qi's romantic rendezvous with Turtle Bro. Or... something like it, at least. Let me look at everything in more detail.

It was a little unsettling, Ling Qi found, to be looking at herself from multiple angles. To study and analyze her own appearance and aura with supernatural precision. To see the hairs that were out of place, the imperfections in the subtle applications of her cosmetics, and the unsteadiness and minute errors in the flows of her qi. Things easy to fix in the moment, but difficult to keep fixed.

Yet, turning those lines of visions outward, she couldn't help but feel that it was worth it. The silent broken stones of the dream grove stood all around, and she knew them perfectly. If she had to fight here, she was certain that she could navigate it perfectly, could read the way the flow of natural qi here would affect her techniques, or allow her to hide her own aura in plain sight, completely without thought.
Yeah, this is what I meant. Cool description of Arts and what they are doing. It's a lot better than 'I cast fist' or 'you get +2 to attack'. Not that this quest ever had that kind of problem.
I also like what the Art does. Divination as super-perception and awareness, leading to the usual advantages awareness in fights or everyday situations gives and in the end also to predictions about future developments and actions. Seems very cool, and useful in all kinds of situations to me. I am glad we took the Art, and hopefully, we'll finish it, too.

She understood Xin's words to her better now. This was the basest root of personal divination, a perfect analysis of your immediate surroundings, such that it became obvious what would occur in the moments to come. Of course, she was alone, and so it was easy to feel like she had mastered the skill, though she knew she was far from it.
She could know which leaf would fall next from the tree to her right with decent accuracy, but if she tried to predict the next action of the sparrow perched in its branches… Well, her success rate was still abysmal.
Well, small steps. You just learned 3 levels of this Art at once, so it's totally fine to take it easy! ... Yeah, I don't really like the current system and how we blaze through Arts like this but oh wells. It's not terrible.

"Big Sister, are you done sitting around playing with lights yet?" One of her points of vision swiveled to see Hanyi sitting atop a crumbling stump of a wall, kicking her legs in irritation. Ling Qi could not help but notice the snarls in her qi, clogging the meridians in her body related to motion and movement. "I'm pretty sure you're supposed to be going to meet that weird guy now."
Like many barely teenaged girls, Hanyi can see the value of meditation, rest and simply being still for a while. She also greatly values esoteric and spiritual experiences. ... Okay, maaaaybe not.
Hanyi continues to appear pretty human, though. A bit bratty or spoiled, and definitely young but I like it. She doesn't seem very alien in her mannerisms, maybe because she got used to Ling Qi.
It shouldn't be her origin, since she does count as a full Spirit. ... Maybe her time with, uhhh... her 'father' also helped humanize her? She did only ever perceive him as being in good health and of sound mind after all.

Ling Qi blinked, and the 'eye' constructs of her new art vanished in glittering light, collapsing her vision back to a single perspective. "Is it that late already?" She asked, squinting up at the cloudy sky.

"It's been hours," Hanyi said with the sort of put upon exasperation that only the young could manage.
I bet Hanyi can also manage a really good 'Are we there yet?'

Ling Qi grimaced, she had only shifted her cultivation plans to prioritize the Curious Diviner's Eye art because of Xuan Shi's invitation in the first place, it would be embarrassing to miss her appointment because of her cultivation. She had been quite surprised a few nights ago to find the odd boy on her doorstep with a request. Still he had helped her enough in the last year that she wasn't going to refuse, even if the thing he wanted assistance with wasn't an apparent challenge site.
Apparent Challenge sites? Those still exist in the Inner Sect or is Ling Qi just making assumptions here?
Anyway, it's good that she can repay Xuan Shi. They were allies last year, but it did feel as if Ling Qi took more than she gave. Equalizing that account is good for any future connection between them, and I don't think there are many people here who'd want to offend Xuan Shi or lose him as a contact.
... I'll write it off as pure fluff that Ling Qi nearly missed an appointment here. That hasn't been an issue before, and I don't think she has become *more* airheaded lately. Much the opposite (sadly...)

"He ate and fell asleep," Hanyi huffed. "See if I sing a bunch of deer to him again," she grumbled darkly as she hopped off the wall to lead the way.
Hanyi's relationship to Zhengui is awesome XD
Also, he really is a doofus! Falling asleep after a cute girl brought him food. Well... teenagers. (And no, I am not trying to ship them here, I am just poking fun at the scene)
... Although I *am* curious about Hanyi meeting Cui, and how Zhengui, especially Zhen, would fare in the middle between them.

Ling Qi chuckled, of course it was something like that, with a thought she gave Sixiang a mental nudge to stir them from their own cultivation. She got a blurry sort of response, something like 'five more minutes' if translated into words. Ling Qi let out a huff, there were some things she would have rather Sixiang not pick up from her.
That's a cute line but... It sounds all wrong to me? Since when is Ling Qi lazy, or sleeps in? She's a workaholic. She naps every couple of days for an hour or so. ... At least in my book that doesn't count as a lazy sleepyhead. And I bet most other Greens see it the same. I guess it's just Ling Qi having 'unique' ideas about what's appropriate. 'OMG, I slept a whole hour this week. So lazy! Need to Cultivate more! ... Where are my drugs!'

With her spirits gathered up, she soon reached the place where Xuan Shi had asked her to meet him, near a ruined old road that wound a ways into the mountains. When she arrived, she found Xuan Shi leaning against one of the weathered distance markers, paging through a thin volume.
Clearly, notes about the mission and a last minute review of potentially useful Formations. Clearly.

"I hope I did not make you wait long," Ling Qi said politely as she approached. She had chosen to travel on the ground, to preserve qi, and to make it easier for Hanyi to skip off and follow her for awhile when she got tired of bantering with Zhengui in her head.
Ling Qi: "Do you have that problem, too, that you can't use your Flight because your Spirits grow bored of bantering with themselves in your head?" - Xiulan: "There is so much wrong with this statement, I don't even know where to begin. Here, try on this ankle-exposing gown!"

The book snapped shut in his hands, and Xuan Shi straightened up, giving her a nod of greeting. "The baroness did not delay unduly," he replied simply. "This one thanks you for your agreement."

"There is no need to call me that," Ling Qi chided. "And I would hardly refuse a request like this. How did you find this place anyway?"

Xuan Shi glanced to the side, tugging his hat down to cover his eyes. "...Study of a text may reveal many hidden things."

How evasive," Sixiang mused.
... Yeah, I am with Sixiang here. If Xuan Shi had a shell, he would have retreated in it.

Ling Qi narrowed her eyes, thinking back to the many times she had seen Xuan Shi in the Outer Sect archives. "Just what sort of text?" Ling Qi asked lightly. "I might need to start reading more."

"...This one discovered a cipher, within a certain series of novels. The final volume was filed among the shelves of the inner sect.," Xuan Shi replied after a moment.
Good of Ling Qi to probe further. It pays off to know what you are getting yourself into.
Xuan Shi's earlier reluctance doesn't seem reasonable here, finding a cipher leading to a treasure is perfectly valid in Xianxia land. But we'll soon see why Turtle Bro is... turtling.

"Huh, I never would have guessed," she said, bemused. "Do you mean those books I saw you reading in the archive last year? Why would they have a cipher leading to a place here?"
So him reading adventure novels was actually *work* and not simply relaxing a little? Noooo, Turtle Bro, you were so cool!

"In the days before the Great Sects, the author resided here, when not voyaging himself," She could detect a hint of excitement in the boys tone as he began to speak on the subject. "This one sought out the placement in this Sect for that purpose."

"So you figured out the cipher before you ever came here?" She asked curiously. She supposed that he really was a smart guy.

"...Yes, though the goal remained shrouded, the path of course intrigued this one," Xuan Shi agreed, perhaps a bit too quickly.
Moon senses tingling; someone is being suspicious.

"Your a bad liar mister," Hanyi said, emerging from the trees behind Ling Qi. She then shot Ling Qi a dirty look. "Big Sister is mean, walking so fast on her stupid long legs."
Aaaand Ling Qi caught it. Good job. Actually, Hanyi caught it, too. ... She has Social Perception *E*. How bad a liar are we talking here?

Ling Qi shot her a cheeky grin, which earned her a frustrated huff, but in her head Zhengui responded suspiciously. "Yeah, why is he lying? Big Sister, you should be careful."

Awww, one day Hanyi will grow up too and have long legs. Or unclog her Meridians and get to use her locked Movement Art again. One thing or the other.
Also, Zhengui caught the lie, too. Well, he has Social Perception D, but at least he got two heads. (Two heads are better at catching lies than one, no?) But... yeah. A master spy and paragon of suaveness Turtle Bro is not.

Ling Qi rather doubted it was a dangerous lie, and she really did need to look into why Zhengui always seemed so… snappish around Xuan Shi. However, Hanyi wasn't wrong. She gave Xuan Shi an expectant look all the same.
This is very interesting, though. What's up with Turtle Bro that Turtle Sneks don't like him? Is there another reason that he doesn't have a Xuan Wu besides them being rare and him being of a Branch House? ... How much Branch are we talking here? He was once described as a 'salty thing'. ... Room for a lot of speculation. Maybe it's nothing, maybe he doesn't have a Xuan Wu because those are indeed rare. Maybe Zhengui dislikes him because of Water Arts. But Ling Qi has quite some Water Meridians, too, so... Well, hopefully we'll find out!

He sighed. "This one merely wished to read the final two volumes, which were archived within the Sect alone."
And just like that, Turtle Bro is cool again! Neeeeeerd.
Travelling all across the Empire, and joining a Sect for two or more years to read two books. I hope these books are *really* good.
Well, I suppose it wasn't his only reason. More like an opportunity he grabbed when he was already here, and then he stumbled over the cipher. Maybe.

Well that was kind of silly, but it was hardly the worst thing ever. Even if it was weird to imagine caring so much about a book as to travel all the way across the empire to get at it.
When was the last time you have been reading a book, young lady? No, law books or Cultivation Manuals don't count.

"We had better get going then," She said instead of voicing her thoughts

"Indeed," he said, seeming relieved. "Adventure awaits."

The odd boys barely concealed eagerness was kind of infectious.
I'll see the nerd from earlier, and raise you a dork. Turtle Bro going strong!
It's pretty nice, though, and a good contrast to the more intense Cultivators Ling Qi often is around. Xiulan, Meizhen, Liling and most certainly Renxiang could all learn a bit from this and take things a little easier. It would probably be a lot more healthy for them.

The path was not a long one. Ling Qi followed Xuan Shi down the winding remains of the ruined road, down into a tiny vale between two large peaks. The road soon came to run beside a tiny stream, which bore the signs of having been a greater flow in the past. At the bottom of the vale, the road reached its end in a crumbling structure of stone. At first glance, Ling Qi had been unimpressed thinking the old ruin to be their destination, but it quickly became clear that it wasn't. Old but well maintained flows of qi radiated through earth and stone, forming the shapes of a complex array that once she noticed , she could not fail to see running through the entire vale.
Are there many old ruins around that seeing one is just so everyday Ling Qi usually doesn't bother to check them out?
And the Formation covers the enire vale? That sounds pretty high tier, actually.

"So, what's the trick?" Ling Qi asked quietly as they strode into a crumbling hall, the faint light of afternoon streaming through the holes in the rooftop. Xuan SHi still seemed confident and showed no sign of needing aid, so she restrained herself from using techniques for now, but she was curious as to what this huge array could be for.
My thoughts exactly!

"The appearance of destitution deflects avarice, but the ruin is merely the door," Xuan Shi replied, words punctuated by the tapping of his staff on stone. As they reached the end of the hall, he swept the staff out and tapped a handful of stones in sequence, and the wall faded away before her eyes, the thick qi of earth and stone dispersing and transforming into the qi of air and wind. Beyond lay a flight of stairs that, if the building was as it appeared, would have lead up into open air.
Makes sense. Xuan Shi handling things competently, as expected. Walls outright dematerializing is more magic... sorry, Qi-manipulation... than I'd have expected; what about just a sliding door? Guess whoever made this wasn't really concerned about keeping the power low.

Mounting the stairs, they came instead to a high ceilinged room, though a great skylight in its center allowed in light. Here, the floor was paved with incongruously well maintained tiling, the jade gleaming as if it had been newly placed. For all their polish though the tiles were arranged chaotically, without any thought for aesthetics. However… Ling Qi narrowed her eyes, reading the lingering qi in the stone.

"It's a big puzzle," Ling Qi said, bemused. The floor was grooved, such that the tiles could be slid around into new positions, using two empty tiles, but what was the goal?
Puzzling, indeed! ... Yeah, I am seeing myself out.
Jade floor tiles. Well, Cultivators live in style. The rest of it... seems like a standard puzzle mechanic. Thankfully, we have a nerd at hand.

"One which this one knows the solution to, and has completed before," Xuan Shi agreed. "The colors present are those of the voyaging heroes' ship. The way does not remain open however, Miss Ling, this one will have to ask that you follow instruction."
As expected. Xuan Shi *is* competent.

"I think I like whoever built this place," Sixiang said amused.
Oh? Why's that? Since when is Sixiang a puzzle fan? Does he just like the connection to the cipher, the story, and the puzzle? Maybe. But...

With Xuan Shi already knowing the solution, it didn't take too long to move the tiles, making them form, instead of a chaotic mess a striped pattern with an eight pointed white star its center. The moment the last tile clicked into place however, a flash of qi ran through the puzzle and mist boiled up from the star in a roiling column, only to quickly slow and flow into a coherent shape. Stairs formed of cloud and mist now rose in the center of the room, rising up to the skylight.
See, eight pointed star. Eight Moon phases/aspects. Sixiang liking where this is going. It *is* a bit of a stretch, but it sounds as if this place and the writer have a connection to the Moon. Specifically, the Dreaming Moon, whom Sixiang hails from.
Cloud and mist staircases give this all a very otherworldly feel. Someone made a connection to FVM earlier, but I don't think this is mist like that. It has a less dreary quality, I bet it is more ... well, dreamlike.

"Is there any reason why we couldn't have just flown up there?" Ling Qi asked.

Xuan Shi gave her a mildly aggrieved look. "Without the stair, you would only exit the ruin."
And someone soooo isn't reading the mood. Or knows how to value a thematic setup.

"Tch, how annoying," Hanyi grumbled in her head.
Make that two someone's. Sheesh. Aren't you supposed to be artists? Musicians? I guess it's not Art for you without a bodycount ~~
"Big Sister, We won't be able to help you in the sky," Zhengui added worriedly.
Wood turtle doesn't like the sky. Seems plausible. Although that's not where things are really going, of course.

If need be, she could always ride Zhengui back to earth, she thought, which seemed to mollify him as she began to mount the stairs beside Xuan Shi. The cloud felt odd, it was as solid as stone, but also slightly springy and smooth as silk. As they passed through the skylight, Ling Qi found herself in a brightly lit room seemingly carved from cloud as welll. Before them was stone gate, and in its center, rather than a latch or a lock, was the symbol of Yin and Yang, with circular arrays the size of a hand where the small circles of color would normally be.
On a scale from 1 to 'I told you so', how similar would you rate this weird cloud stuff to Sixiang's pillow fort?

"This is why you invited me huh?" Ling Qi asked.

"The way will open only for a man and a woman together," Xuan Shi agreed, stepping toward the gate. "This one does not understand the purpose of such a lock, but perhaps it will be explained beyond."
Really? You don't get the purpose of this lock? Reeeeally?
Turtle Bro, you are a dork but I don't think you are socially blind. There were also the two Twin Admirals who had a 'talk' with you about coming a bit out of your shell and making contact with a certain someone who is bonded to a unique Xuan Wu. Together with his bad 'lying' earlier... Look, I don't actually mind, and I don't want to be paranoid but I am really, really doubtful about the coincidences here or Xuan Shi having no idea where all this is leading. Or the symbolism.
But again, I don't really mind. It's a bit manipulative and dishonest but so far he hasn't done anything bad. Besides, it amuses me to think how he racked his brain for months how to find an opener to talk to Ling Qi or get closer to her, and all he could come up with was to find some kind of love-nest Trial and invite her along while playing totally innocent. That sure won't make anything awkward, ever! ... Dork.

Ling Qi eyed the symbol, briefly scanning it for any hostile seeming characters, but it seemed a fairly standard locking formation with a kind of weird key condition. She saw no connecting characters that might set off some other effect, and she was fairly sure Xuan Shi would have already checked more carefully than she could after all.
Yeah, the day we spot a Formation that Xuan Shi missed is the day he gets to eat his staff. It's still good practice to keep your head in the game and not just coast along. Very professional. I like that of Ling Qi.

Stepping forward, Ling Qi raised her hand and placed it in the array on the Yang side of the formation, while Xuan Shi did the same with the Yin side. The Arrays lit up as they both laid their palms flat against the gate and then, with a grinding groan, the gates opened inward revealing…

[] A corridor seemingly composed wholly of roses and thorny vines, that split and twisted into the distance, forming a great labyrinth
[] A softly lit temple, with sparking qi barriers blocking the way toward its rear. Behind them, you can see the looming shadow of a great statue of some forgotten great spirit.
[] A pier and a little boat tied to it, floating on a river that flows into the yawning mouth of an ominous cave.
Well, the vote is already over so I won't try to come up with any theories here. This review is too long anyway as it is XD
Still, a little sad that we don't get the rose garden maze. I'd have voted for letting Zhengui try to eat his way through it!

Well, if this keeps up I might have to start calling Turtle Bro 'Turtle Husbando'. Not now, but sometime in the future. I might be alright with that, and it's far too early to tell anyway. We'll get a lot of opportunities to get to know Xuan Shi more, and anything marriage or serious relationship related will be years in the future. Given Cultivators, and the relative standings of Ling Qi and Xuan Shi, likely decades. Still, developing Xuan Shi as a core contact seems pretty good to me. He is not only useful and strong, but also pretty cool and honestly a good contrast to the more hard trying cast.

Of course, it's also entirely possible and more than fine with me if he simply develops into a male friend. Those things are possible! Even around teenagers. Maybe.

Nonetheless; after the intense and hard hitting arc we just finished, I hope the current arc keeps its more lighthearted, dare I see 'fun' tone. It's good breather before the next grim and dark event, I believe!
Maybe I should speculate more about what we might *find* in this mystery mansion, aside from making vague Moon allusions. Maybe it's something that ties in, or replaces our planned Moon quest for EPC. The Xuan do have some Moon connections, too. But well. This is already becoming a wall of text, so I'll return to lurking and stalking the thread for the next update!

Keep up the good work, Yrs!

While I am laughing, we probably would have noticed if he was lying, he was really bad at it earlier.

Thirdly, going to be adjusting the shopping system in future turns, so that it will be possible to purchase talismans with cash instead of just sect points.
So, this is a pretty cool change that is coming down the pipes that I haven't seen much discussion regarding. Since that's the case, let's start a discussion about it!

The first thing to note is that the majority of our talismans are subpar under the new system. The only talismans that we have which do some heavy lifting are the flute and the Cai Robes. The other three equipment that we have slotted are:
Anchor of Eight Imperial Duties:

A surprisingly heavy silver choker engraved with each of the eight elements. -5 Spine art costs, +5 to Armor. +5 Resist

Fleeting Moonlight Shawl

It's hard to tell the color of this thin gossamer fabric. From some angles it seems like a pale white and from others a shiny black. Gives a +5 bonus to Hit with Dark and Moon Arts. Perception checks against the wearer have a penalty of 5 in low light or darkness.

Fairy Flower hairpiece:

A beautiful floral hair decoration based off a certain notorious flower in the depths of the Emerald Sea. Like a plant, it drinks in the ambient qi, but when under threat, the rustling of its petals fortells the spread of hallucinatory pollen. -5 Wood & Moon art costs. Provides minor qi regeneration
- Startled Blossom: F
the hairpiece releases pollen around its user, disorienting nearby enemies. An Enemies within near range suffer a penalty to Hit and Avoid and Perception in the immediate term, with severity based on Wits.
Emphasis mine.

The bonuses that these apply aren't particularly relevant anymore. The changes to how qi is being handled have dramatically changed the usefulness of qi reduction and none of the bonuses particularly stack to make any meaningful change in our capabilities to hit, remain unseen, or our defenses. Furthermore, there has been talk of moving away from talismans that provide small passive benefits and move towards talismans that have larger meaningful active uses. Examples from Li Suyin's adventure is the Light generating Patch, the Binding agent, and whatever created the blob of doom. Now, I'll admit, these aren't particularly good examples because they are consumables, but we can see the type of active effect that we might want.

So what are some ideas that we might want to pursue? If they are activated abilities, then stuff which boosts our stealth for a short while would be nice in a pinch. Or items that could boost our spiritual avoid/armor could be nice, especially as we develop those skills since it keys off our domain.

Since we are looking to spend more time with family, maybe getting an item that slightly concentrates qi could be useful. It would be a helpful tool to help Mom to learn about qi flows and to identify them. Maybe even help Mother cultivate a tad bit easier.

Maybe get a dispel focused talisman (like what Han Jian had in the tournament) for Zhengui given his lackluster dispel ability.

There's a ton of possibilities here, and I'm excited to start exploring the avenues that this will open up for us.

What that should be read as is not "let me sleep just five more minutes" but "let me cultivate just five more minutes". Six is picking up Ling Qi's cultivation obsession.

Though might be both, considering that Six is a dream muse sleeping might be a way they cultivate.

It's a joke playing on the expectation of what a sentence usually means:
Ling Qi chuckled, of course it was something like that, with a thought she gave Sixiang a mental nudge to stir them from their own cultivation. She got a blurry sort of response, something like 'five more minutes' if translated into words.
Sixiang isn't saying "I will wake up in 5 more minutes", they are saying "I will stop cultivating in 5 more minutes".

EDIT: Dammit, I am blind and should have caught up to thread completely.

It *is* a bit of a stretch, but it sounds as if this place and the writer have a connection to the Moon. Specifically, the Dreaming Moon, whom Sixiang hails from.

I'd suggest rather the guiding moon, which has connections to voyaging that the author who built this place seemed to dream of. Also, connections with the Xuan, who lead us here. I know the Guiding Moon isn't completely sold on Li, but I'm a bit dissappointed that so many wrote off boats immediately because it seems to foreclose the implied path.

Hmm, wonder if it was the nature of her rather forced and abrupt breakthrough, part of the Yukionna lifecycle or trauma induced chokes?
"Well we should get moving then," Ling Qi said. "Thank you Hanyi."

"Of course," the young girl preened at her thanks. "Your gonna have to wake up that big doofus though."

"What happened to Zhengui?" Ling Qi asked curiously.

"He ate and fell asleep," Hanyi huffed. "See if I sing a bunch of deer to him again," she grumbled darkly as she hopped off the wall to lead the way.
Considering Zhengui is positively hyperactive by Xuanwu standards, raising a normal one must be a nightmare.

And I can definitely see how they might have population woes...it'd be close to a case of "The stars are right". Though it does help that for turtles they lay clutches of unfertilized eggs which are then discovered and fertilized later.

Not unlike how Kohatu's core was used.

Cultivating until you lose track of time is...not bad I suppose.
Somewhat marginal gains though.

The D rank bypass is pretty powerful, but the low rank is mostly useful as a surprise, since you could score a few free hits before they realize saving qi isn't working.

Still, if theres nothing it can bypass accuracy or penetration boosts never hurt.

With her spirits gathered up, she soon reached the place where Xuan Shi had asked her to meet him, near a ruined old road that wound a ways into the mountains. When she arrived, she found Xuan Shi leaning against one of the weathered distance markers, paging through a thin volume.

"I hope I did not make you wait long," Ling Qi said politely as she approached. She had chosen to travel on the ground, to preserve qi, and to make it easier for Hanyi to skip off and follow her for awhile when she got tired of bantering with Zhengui in her head.
Poor Zhengui got yelled at for falling asleep.

"And I would hardly refuse a request like this. How did you find this place anyway?"

Xuan Shi glanced to the side, tugging his hat down to cover his eyes. "...Study of a text may reveal many hidden things."

How evasive," Sixiang mused.

"Huh, I never would have guessed," she said, bemused. "Do you mean those books I saw you reading in the archive last year? Why would they have a cipher leading to a place here?"

"In the days before the Great Sects, the author resided here, when not voyaging himself," She could detect a hint of excitement in the boys tone as he began to speak on the subject. "This one sought out the placement in this Sect for that purpose."
Thats...going a little far to chase your favorite book series, though I can understand the sentiment.

...did he setup Ji Rong to get his pass so he could get at the book for free?
Probably not. He's too shitty a liar to get away with it.
"So you figured out the cipher before you ever came here?" She asked curiously. She supposed that he really was a smart guy.

"...Yes, though the goal remained shrouded, the path of course intrigued this one," Xuan Shi agreed, perhaps a bit too quickly.

"Your a bad liar mister," Hanyi said, emerging from the trees behind Ling Qi. She then shot Ling Qi a dirty look. "Big Sister is mean, walking so fast on her stupid long legs."
Reminds me of when we first met her. We chased her all over the mountain.
Still, how bad a liar is Xuan Shi that Hanyi's abysmal social perception can see through it?
Ling Qi shot her a cheeky grin, which earned her a frustrated huff, but in her head Zhengui responded suspiciously. "Yeah, why is he lying? Big Sister, you should be careful."

Ling Qi rather doubted it was a dangerous lie, and she really did need to look into why Zhengui always seemed so… snappish around Xuan Shi. However, Hanyi wasn't wrong. She gave Xuan Shi an expectant look all the same.
It does seem a bit unusual. Zhengui is normally so amiable to people too. Kind of trusting even.
He sighed. "This one merely wished to read the final two volumes, which were archived within the Sect alone."

Well that was kind of silly, but it was hardly the worst thing ever. Even if it was weird to imagine caring so much about a book as to travel all the way across the empire to get at it.

"We had better get going then," She said instead of voicing her thoughts

"Indeed," he said, seeming relieved. "Adventure awaits."

The odd boys barely concealed eagerness was kind of infectious.
Finally getting your hands on the ending is something I can understand!

"The appearance of destitution deflects avarice, but the ruin is merely the door,"
Read: "most people look at it and dismiss it since it clearly has no loot"
Only for the formation to show up once you're close enough.
Xuan Shi replied, words punctuated by the tapping of his staff on stone.
That seems significant? Changing from Earth to Air element is rather difficult considering the opposite approaches.

"One which this one knows the solution to, and has completed before," Xuan Shi agreed. "The colors present are those of the voyaging heroes ship. The way does not remain open however, Miss Ling, this one will have to ask that you follow instruction."
...this trial is DEFINITELY for rabid fans only.
Who memorizes the colors of a ship in a book?!
"I think I like whoever built this place," Sixiang said amused.

"Ling Qi is fine," she said absently. "Alright, just tell me what to do," it would take much longer with only one person sliding tiles.

With Xuan Shi already knowing the solution, it didn't take too long to move the tiles, making them form, instead of a chaotic mess a striped pattern with an eight pointed white star its center.
Hail Chaos Undivided The Moon!

The moment the last tile clicked into place however, a flash of qi ran through the puzzle and mist boiled up from the star in a roiling column, only to quickly slow and flow into a coherent shape. Stairs formed of cloud and mist now rose in the center of the room, rising up to the skylight.

"Is there any reason why we couldn't have just flown up there?" Ling Qi asked.

Xuan Shi gave her a mildly aggrieved look. "Without the stair, you would only exit the ruin."

"Tch, how annoying," Hanyi grumbled in her head.
No romance in their souls.
And you guys are musicians for shame!
"Big Sister, We won't be able to help you in the sky," Zhengui added worriedly.

If need be, she could always ride Zhengui back to earth, she thought, which seemed to mollify him as she began to mount the stairs beside Xuan Shi.
Meteoric Zhengui?
The cloud felt odd, it was as solid as stone, but also slightly springy and smooth as silk.
Its Sixiang's pillows!

"This is why you invited me huh?" Ling Qi asked.

"The way will open only for a man and a woman together," Xuan Shi agreed, stepping toward the gate. "This one does not understand the purpose of such a lock, but perhaps it will be explained beyond."
Possibly as dense as Zhengui...

Hmm, wonder if it was the nature of her rather forced and abrupt breakthrough, part of the Yukionna lifecycle or trauma induced chokes?
I imagine it's more related to the reluctance/regrets about moving on that Hanyi had when we took her away.
"I know Mama wants me to go. I felt it, but…"
"I wanna be able to go and come back!"
Hanyi very much wanted to have her cake and eat it there, wanting both adventure with Ling Qi and to stay at home with her Mama. Now that she's her own spirit instead of a part of another, those personal hangups and doubts seem to directly affect her qi/arts/techniques just like they do for cultivators and spirits.

It can be fixed easily enough with either Cai arts or ENM. Not sure if we'll have the time though.
I find it relatively hard to believe that we won't have the time. It's a question of whether we want to prioritize stealth, have stealth as a secondary skill, or drop stealth.

Given that stealth synergizes well with the perception gates we have going on (FVM and PLR specifically) and it seems fairly crucial to our position as an officer in the Scout division of the Sect military (the one that has us doing more dangerous missions solo or with a small group), I find the stance that we should drop stealth fairly questionable.

Yeah, I want to train stealth if we can as well. I'm not sure when the next turn we'll have time for a new stealth art is though. We'll probably get new main arts relatively soon that we'll want to prioritize, and I think it's unlikely that any of them will be focused on stealth. It's possible we'll still have space for it depending on how the plans work out, but we may need to delay it.

Dropping something is just a matter of always finding excuses to never have it at all. Considering this turn's votes, we aren't likely to get stealth next turn either, and this means that unless a new stealth art of high quality drop into our lap we aren't likely to learn a stealth art before we get in archive 2... which would mean turn 7/8 at the earliest.

However, at that point it would mean specifically searching for it when our build wouldn't have had effective combat stealth at any point either last thread or this thread, and it seems like it would be easier to not introduce a new variable in our build that late.

I think unless things change, the time where we could have gotten stealth for combat has already passed and trying to pretend "we'll totally introduce a new major element in our build we never had! soon!" is questionable.

People have voted, and "anything but stealth" won.

I know we're being choked out for AP, but that's not going to be helped by not trying to find some kind of edge, because we're not going to find the edges we need to meet our goals out of the archive.

As long as the opportunity cost is in stealth's favor, it should still be worth it. The fact that we've never tried it out hurts though, and the sacrifices we'll have to make to get stealth will likely become greater the closer we get to the tournament.

The single point you make in this post is "we haven't had effective combat stealth at any point and trying to introduce it is introducing a major element in our build." Which is a complete mischaracterization of what stealth has done for us in combat.

Yes, Ling Qi thought as she sank into the twirling prince's shadow, no more substantial than a wraith. They would drive him off, and then she could interrogate the tree spirit and find out what was going on. To that end, she would have to do enough damage to spook him though. Gathering her qi, Ling Qi felt the chill of a frozen winter spread through her insubstantial form.

A chill wind blew, and a circle of frost spread from the shadow where Ling Qi hid. The young man's eyes widened a fraction, but it was too late. The frozen notes of the Hoarfrost Caress rang out as Ling Qi resolved back into her physical form, flute raised. The icy qi crashed down over him. In an instant the horned prince was sheathed viridian light, qi like the mark of millenial tree absorbing the baleful frost of her art before shattering into gleaming shards of dissolving light.

He spun in a blur, the head of his spear blazing like a comet, and struck. Ling Qi had only a fraction of an instant before the point struck her dead in the center of the chest with a muffled boom of displaced air…

Only to skitter harmlessly to the side with a shriek like a thousand axe blades digging into the core of an ancient tree. The prince's eyes widened, first in confusion, and then in building outrage, but, as Ling Qi began to ghost backward, light steps carrying her back out of range of his spear, a fist the size of his torso slammed into his side and sent him flying to crash with a thunderous crack against one of the massive trees that lined the clearing.

To his credit, the prince landed on his feet as he fell from the crater in the ancient bark, the right side of his robe wet with blood where the thorny spikes on the tree spirits fist had dug into his side. "Miserable assassin," he whispered in a furious hiss. "Did your Elders pluck that art from the corpses of my brothers?"
Clearly this scene never happened for us. Clearly we didn't surprise him because of our capacities at stealth. And this scene
"I'd say to look into Grandmothers art but… you're not there yet," Sixiang mused.

"Well, if you say so," Shen Hu replied, stretching his arms above his head before falling back into a combat stance. "So no mist this time?"

"No mist," Ling Qi agreed. Not quite looking at him. Xiulan really had infected her. Shen Hu could be distracting at times. "It'd defeat the point if you had to spend half of your time finding me."

Shen Hu nodded, and Ling Qi let her meridians flood with dark qi. She wouldn't let herself slow down now. Besides, sparring was more relaxing than most of her other responsibilities.
Never happened either. I mean clearly having a Green 2/Bronze 2 spending half his time finding us is not a feature of our stealth interacting with FVM's mist. Clearly that's not what's happening there, its... something else! It must be! Otherwise, it would mean that out stealth has worked against Green 2/Bronze 2 cultivators (twice) during combat. And that would mean it's a demonstrated part of our combat build.

And that was only 2 months ago in quest time! And that was before our stealth became specialized. Speaking of our stealth becoming specialized I distinctly remember people voting to spend xp on leveling up stealth. And here's the evidence:
[X] Actual Plan Delta
-[X] 16 YSS covered by Cultivation Art + Site, Medium Consumables (free)
-[X] EPC Bonuses to Sable Crescent Step (Or Physical Cultivation is SCS s capped)
-[X] Cultivate Spirit x4 (2x Manipulation, 2x Wits)
-[X] Cultivate Physical x4 (2x Dexterity, 2x Resolve)
-[X] Cultivate Sable Crescent Step x2 (2x Dance) (Overflow favoring Spiritual if we're not at Green 2, otherwise Physical)
-[X] Cultivate Curious Diviner's Eye x1 (1x Perceptiveness)
-[X] Exploration via New Moon Sect Map x2
-[X] Challenge Research x2
-[X] Research Arts in Sect Archive x1 (1x Academics)
-[X] Take Sect Jobs x4 (2x Stealth, 2x Woodwinds)
So the voters have clearly voted to level up stealth which refutes the stance you've taken that the voters have voted for anything but stealth. And then there's the fact that SCS itself is a stealth art and we are leveling that art up.

And you know what? The plan before that was this plan
[X]Plan Will it Blend?
-[X] Invest 4x YSS (+12 Free YSS)
-[X] High Resource Expense (YSS income wiped out, -5YSS reserves)
-[X] Buy sponsored Sect GSS
-[X] EPC bonus to EPC
-[X] Cultivate Spirit x4 (Presence x2, Manip x2)
-[X] Cultivate Phys x4 (Dex x2, Stamina x2)
-[X] Cultivate EPC x4 (Perceptiveness x2, Qi x2)
-[X] Cultivate SCS x3 (Dodge x2, Wits)
-[X] Cultivate Argent Genesis x2 (Resolve x2)
-[X] Take Sect Jobs(Earns Sect Points 11-20 per AP) x2 (Stealth x2)
-[X] Research Arts in Sect Archive x1 (Academics)
Which, you guessed it, also trained stealth.

Which means 2 out of the 4 plans we've voted for have trained stealth, and, I would hazard a guess, the only reason we haven't trained stealth again is because it's been capped at C rank.

So 50% of our plans have involved training stealth in some way (and given the previous limit of only 2 on a skill training, to it's maximum capacity) and you want to say that the voters have voted to do anything but stealth?! That's some revisionist history there. Like, we are entering Ancient China levels of revisionist history at this point.

Your plan last time entered late in the party, competed against some pretty heavy competition, and still almost won. So clearly there is support for stealth. And, as you've said, the voters have voted 50% of the time to train stealth and so clearly we need to go in on stealth. By your own admission.

Huh huh.

You can quote Ling Qi being ineffective at combat stealth and say "See! she tried as oppening moves/sparring!" but it doesn't change the fact that we can't use stealth in combat, and that stealth needs heavy investment to be usable. 'Training stealth' being that investment would be like saying that 'Training Speech' this turn means we are planning to make Speech a major part of our build any time soon (hint: we aren't).

While the argument of "We need better art/it's one AP" is part of the reason why we won't ever get stealth working: Stealth is a heavy investment, and people aren't even willing to sacrifice anything for beginning the investment unless something incredibly strong fall in our lap. However, the biggest reason is that it's now too late. The train has passed unless we are hoping to get multiple rare stealth arts fall in our laps that will excite us that aren't archive, and we can't count on those.... and it would mean not getting something else.

Shinies reign supreme, and complaining that it's unfair to blame "One AP of Shiny" is willingly lying to ourself about the cost of said shiny. One AP of shiny can sometimes mean something can't be gotten reasonable (barring lucky finds) for half a year, and by that time it's far too late to even try it.

Also, @Thor Twin... our stealth isn't specialised.

I think that the phrasing of "dropping stealth" is fundamentally backwards. We have one stealth art - Sable Crescent Step - and it is not an art we are planning to drop anytime soon. No, what is happening isn't us dropping stealth; it is failing to invest in stealth.

I admit that the difference is largely a matter of semantics - but this more accurate way of representing the world should paint a much clearer picture of what is going on and what needs to be done about it. Nothing stops us from investing in stealth at any time, but not all investments are good investments. It is up to us to decide what stealth arts if any provide enough of an advantage to warrant the time and effort required to acquire and master those arts.

If we think that we need to be able to pillage people's storage rings or sneak into their hidden bases, then we can grab a utility stealth art or at least keep an eye out for such. If we think that such a thing would just be a distraction from our goals for the next year-and-a-half, we shouldn't. If we think hiding provides a greater defensive boost than investing more in dodge-arts or other defenses, we should invest in combat stealth. If not, we should stick to training in conventional defenses. Etc.

What we SHOULDN'T do is go out and grab the first low level stealth art we see, just because we have a vague feeling of not wanting to "drop" stealth.

Until we actually look at the kind of stats we can expect to face in our push for the Cai quest any arguments based on AP costs are premature.

Before we get into an argument about stealth we should probably start lobbying for a more useful sect rank research action.

Edit: excepting those arguments based on the time we will spend in the sect, since that we do have a fair chance of being right about. Well, so long as there isn't a barbarian interrupt by then.

The problem is, ultimately, that the main goal of being able to win 1v1 contests with peer cultivators is unfriendly to anything except combat builds or super specialized skills, so of course we are going to ignore things that don't contribute to that, regardless of how much more non-combat roles are outside of the inner sect. Thus we walk a tightrope between being able to keep up enough with Cai to meet her mother's standards, and being able to develop skills and arts and connections that have more long-term value than 'I cast punch'. Tbh the genre has 'i cast punch' protagonists for a reason: the narratives are optimized for those sorts of characters.
