Well I see fan yu as being more representative of a shockingly down to earth young master in xianxia,in that he's still a jerk who won't change his ways-but apparently according to jian he has some good points. Xuilan really has had a tragic time of it since coming to the sect, so much so that her friendship with Ling Qi and newfound determination to cultivate are the only real whole and true positives I can see, and they have their own bitterness and hardships.
Hopefully her and Suyin are closer than I think and she can take that away too, but I fear not.
Really do hope she can find a nice guy to get over Jian with back home who shares her talent and drive, she deserves it.

Very likely, or at least she'll make very good headway in doing so provided her ambition holds up under constant parental attention and supervision. Xiulan will no longer be constrained by discovering/acquiring resources herself. Since she is very on path for her family they likely have multiple sites and some expertise with making the drugs that will work best for Lanlan.
