Yes, you hit the research stage with 16 Inno

Academia Nut - Today at 10:43 PM
You then got three crits on research rolls

Academia Nut - Today at 10:43 PM
So you completed both Germ Theory and Anasthesia

Academia Nut - Today at 10:44 PM
I am splitting off a new stat subsection called 'Infrastructure'

Academia Nut - Today at 10:44 PM
And yes, suppress agitators can be both propaganda efforts and actual billyclubs to the head

Academia Nut - Today at 10:54 PM
They don't know exactly what is going on, just that a person needs to be awake and sober when exposed to the light. If they are lucky nothing happens, but especially if they are in an incoherent state weird shit starts happening, usually involving pain or hallucinations and lots of general screaming
Honestly there is starting to be a distinct Gylmaryn creole emerging across multiple strata, with pure Gylruvian being considered a backwoods thing while Ymaryn is becoming increasingly a scholarly only language

Academia Nut - Today at 10:55 PM
Also, while I should say this stuff in the thread, I am beat and not sure how much longer I will be awake. Definitely no update tonight
Gylruv, so Gylmaryn, although I suppose it could become Gulmaryn

Academia Nut - Today at 11:03 PM
You're up to 12/20 PW for mid turn

Woohoo! Medical revolution here we go! Just wait for that metagreen research to finish and things will get really good.
We lost a huge amount sending advisor to Hung
Hung and Black Sheep are tying up 2 Edu and 2 Inno total. The Sheep are able to pay though.

That's my bad, I thought Hung was 2 Edu (out of our then 5)
The Sending Advisors effects both tie 1 point of the relevant stat(s) in exchange for 2 points of SoL.
Sending Military Advisors: -1 Armies and +2 (0) SoL for duration of reform period, transfer prestige each turn from target (3 for GP, 2 for SP, 1 for others)
Sending Technical Advisors (Black Sheep, Hung): -2 Education, -2 Innovation, +4 (2) SoL

Tl;dr we didn't do this to preserve the status quo. We intervened to prevent the rise of a continental superpower, and hitting them right as they started rising was the only way to be sure we could win.
Or, as I prefer to see it- to ensure we're the only continental superpower :V

I don't think anyone can really deny the martial prowess of the Dual Monarchy now.

That'll likely end in tears. If I recall things correctly, social customs and culture (among else a heavy resistance to wage earning) in sub-saharan Africa didn't mesh well with modern ideas.
Yes, never really stopped countries from doing so though. They're going to want to grab the resource rich territory no other large organized state is holding, so they will try this regardless.
In truth the Khemetri have never cared for Greater Khem, what with that basically denoting all of Africa. I doubt they'll try to conquer a lot of it, maybe some choice bits in the nearby area and certainly anything the Syffrynites try to claim that looks interesting to them, but not much more.
Their not caring is on thin grounds. They have practical reasons of resource acquisition, lack of significant opposition(seriously, nothing there is up to dealing with the Khemetri industrialized army, though they'd need jungle warfare doctrine to do the job) and a portion of national pride to reacquire the glories of the past, however tenous.

They'll certainly try sweeping down, especially when it comes to taking the coasts and major waterways.
I'd imagine that, depending on what you call the ground, that war is more about sensible decision to not leave a giant revolutionary bonfire on our borders alone. More, propaganda to conscripts might very well include passages about saving poor Syffrynites from the deprivations of religious and revolutionary fanatics.
The primary reason for intervention is to back up our promises to our allies, and this is how it's handled in the halls of power. The propaganda, based on our current cultural techs, is going to be more about national pride and restoring 'proper order' to the world than saving the Syffrynites, especially when our current imperial stance is that we don't want that land(whereas the salvation propaganda stance is going to push towards keeping it to save them properly)
The Sketch aren't the only sharks out there and the others we can beat at sea straight up. The Sketch are harder but if they are fighting harder in Syffryn than we are then they will be stretched. Not to mention that in the Kus ocean their ships are operating further from their industrial base than ours - same problem we've been having in the not!Pacific with the Nohon. They will also have significant forces on the continent where our armies can get at them as well as Kus as a hostage to fortune. Just because the Causus Belli is at sea doesn't mean our retaliation has to be naval. So no, as long as they get something from their moves in the region they won't be picking a fight with us to try and get everything.

Protection isn't the main reason to cut a deal with us anyway. Those colonies have half the Halvyni navy which is a quality force. What they don't have is an industrialised trade partner to supply them with modern goods because Syffryn is a burning war zone with their home nation at the heart of the inferno. We are a huge market with the biggest intact economy in the world, we own the debts of many of their companies and we can offer cash and credit. And we have the goodwill of attacking the revolutionaries before the Sketch even though they were closer.

The Sketch haven't made colonial claims against the Halvyni colonies, they've made diplomatic overtures. This is a contest of diplomacy, commerce and espionage.
The whole thing with the Southeast Asia claim is that if pushed the HEKC is entirely willing to unleash mercenaries on our affliates there, and we can't retaliate without getting our ass kicked at sea there.

Ergo, it's a very hollow grip.
The CCP was a perfect storm cooked up by the Syffryn powers, and then augmented by Syffryn hero units. We simply turned an extant resistance force into a sovereign country.
This is not magic, because the Southeast Asia region is a patchwork of minor states which spends a lot of their time performing piracy on each other, except for the Sketch colonies. They are the power of the region, and we can't begin to contest them until the Hung get their feet back under them.

Problem is, this sort of thing doesn't collapse over night. Some people have made ISIS comparisons, which is somewhat accurate. As long as they keep spreading, they can keep looting to prop up the system for a time. The Federation would have almost certainly gone on to take the Hes and Beh, and they likely would have damaged a significant number of other nations. Worse, with each conquest, their power would have grown. If they had turned on us after the fall of Hes and Beh, even we would have struggled to stop them.

Hitting them early made it so they couldn't bring their full resources to bear on either us or the Hes, and let us shatter them before they could begin to snowball.

Tl;dr The Federation was going to die, but like a fire, it was a matter of how much it would spread and damage before it went out.
And a matter of who hates us and how much after we're done.
If it burned out and then we came to the 'rescue', the Tortun natives are going to have a much better view of things.

News from the discord: After thirteen years of technical advisors, the Black Sheep nearly done reorganizing their economy and will likely restore our Edu and Inno while cutting off the flow of SoL.

The year is 1928 EY.

"I trust everyone's enjoying the spirits?" Ymaryn-dono emerges from the kitchen, pushing a tray of sweets, breads, and cookies onto the dinner table. Her friends, who had busied themselves consuming copious amounts of wine, vodka, osake, beer, and whatever the hell the Hesprancais called alcohol, looked upon the tray with widened eyes.

"How... how do you have this much food?!" exclaims Khemetri-san, reaching greedily for the sugar cookies.

"Owning half the continent has it's advantages~" she replies, a thin smile playing on her lips. "It's certainly better arable land than desert. No offense, of course."

"None taken!" Khemetri-san replies, too busy to care.

"I must humbly decline," Nohon-kun sighs, rubbing his stomach. "I... I think I overdrank, friend. Will you forgive me? I cannot eat anymore..."

Tortun-dono prods the boy's side, smirking. "What is it about easterners that makes them unable to hold their alcohol, anyway?"

Nohon-kun tenses fingers gripping the saber strapped to his belt, and looks like he is about to shout a retort.

"Boys, boys..." Ymaryn-dono looks between the two sternly. "We're all gentlemen here, aren't we? Come - put aside your differences for once in your lives and enjoy the fire together with me." at her word, the two back down, though they still continue to shoot glares at each other across the table. Some things never changed...

"Ymaryn-san?" Hung, who normally sat near the edge of the table, by the window, was looking outside with a hint of alarm. "Did you... bring any more barbarians to this gathering? I d-don't think I can stomach any more than those already present..."

"No, I - "

"SOMEONE SAID THERE'D BE BEER!" UPM-kun suddenly bursts through the door, dressed in his typical snappy business suit. He grins at everyone, getting hostile stares in return. "And boy, am I never the kind of guy to pass up a treat! So; what are we serving?"

"I don't think I invited you," Ymaryn-dono replies testily.

"Aw come on, isn't that we're all about here? Redistribution of the food and all that?" he laughs boyishly.

"I'm sorry, wasn't it you who invented communism?!"

"Gentlemen, gentlemen..." Ymaryn pinches the tip of her nose and sighs. "I... suppose we can accommodate one more guest. Though you'll exercise proper decorum, I hope?"

"Pff... all you noble-types are no fun! Learn to live a little, yeah?" UPM-kun chuckles, removing his fedora and hanging it on a nearby coat-hanger. "I mean, gosh, all this stuck-up-ness and aristocracy is probably why all of your culture combined pales when compared to mine! Who's magnificent? Huh? Who is it? This guy, that's who! Woo! Haha!"

Nohon looks visibly agitated, and Hung already starts making motions to leave. UPM-kun seems to notice this, and chuckles a little more nervously. "Uh... sorry. I get a bit carried away in my optimism sometimes, you know? Gee golly, I didn't mean to sound arrogant! No sirree!"

Ymaryn-dono sighed. As much as he was a pain, he wasn't... evil. "Just... find a seat. I'll get another tray of cookies ready for you."

"Sweet! Thanks, crow-baby!"

Ymaryn sighed again. Mahaxian slang, she thought to herself. I'll never understand it. She moves into the kitchen to grab another tray, like she had said. Her hand wavers over the cyanide shaker, and for a moment she wonders if she should just end him, right now. But no... that would be... uncivilized. And Ymaryn-dono was a civilized girl. Yes; very civilized.

Very.

Ymaryn walks pleasantly over to a nearby telephone. She hangs the cord around her finger, dials the tone, and waits for the operator to pick up. "Hello, Carrion?"

~~~
"Byrd?"
"Yo?" the girl looks up from her desk. Stacks of financial reports, newspapers, and other things fill her workspace.
"New orders from the top, apparently," her coordinator replies.
"...huh. What is it this time?" she asks, wearily.
"You know how we've been buying up the stock of all those Mahaxian automobile companies?"
"...yeah...?"
"Sell them."
"What?"
"Sell them all."
Byrd glances at her coordinator, waiting for him to elaborate. He doesn't. "...okay...? Why?"
"No idea."
Byrd just sighs. She wonders, sometimes, why in the name of Crow the homeland sends orders like these. They were always so random, and without purpose. Whoever was running the show must be horribly aloof. "Whatever you say..." she reaches into a nearby filing cabinet, grabs a few documents, and heads over to the nearby Bank of Freedom. She knew the teller there; she should get this stupid op over with so she could get on with her diplomatic work.
~~~
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN, THE BANK DOESN'T HAVE ANY MORE MONEY?!"

The shout rings loud across the street. Pedestrians far and wide stop to listen in on the commotion. Surely, their ears were deceiving them. Banks? Out of money? Such schutzpah!

"I'm sorry, sir, but - "

"Listen, buddy, I owe Frank and Miller two thousand dollars for mortgage. Just two hundred and seventy dollars isn't gonna hurt nobody!" the man says, red-faced.

The teller pales. "Sir... we don't..."

"You don't WHAT?" the man demands.

Whispers, whispers all around. Suddenly, people start rushing into the bank to ask their own questions. Many start asking the teller if they can withdraw their own money, as well. The teller politely denies them.

By the time Byrd had made it out of the Bank of Freedom, the entire street was rioting. The local police rolled up in their patrol cars and tried to control the chaos, but it was spreading. Like a fire. She couldn't help but look at the money in her fingers, realize the implication of that simple order... and giggle.

The year is 1929 EY.

And this year was the year the UPM burned.

"Oh dear..." Ymaryn watched the fire rising in the distance. She was feeling... a little regretful. No doubt this would have far-reaching economic consequences...

UPM-kun stood, flabbergasted, hand held to his heart. "How...! We were doing so well..."

UPM-kun seized up suddenly as Ymaryn-dono cups his cheeks with her hands. "Oh... you poor thing. You know what, you should stay for a while longer. We can sit and discuss economics together! Maybe we can exchange cultural ideals, learn technologies..."

UPM-kun looks at her angrily. "This isn't time for games, Ymaryn! My country is burning!"

"I know~!" Ymaryn brings herself close to UPM-kun's ear. "...and the fire... is warm."
Considering the events of the past twenty in game years, this omake has gotten much funnier.

In reference to the Black Sheep?
Yes.

No, that was only for a year or two before it wrapped up because it was obvious things were well in hand

There was no repeat of a large part of a city blowing up in a running gun battle and fist fight between men hopping between the roofs of moving carriages and smashing their way into stores full of olive oil

I'm curious, how much of our alliances with Khem and BS are motivated by genuine like and well regards towards each other by both parties by this point in addition to shared national interests? These are some fairly enduring alliances and everyone's profited from them nicely.

Alliance between Khem and Black Sheep? They don't really share anything with each other except as trade partners.

I think at this point it's sort of one and the same. The relationship has been so valuable for so long the idea that it's a long-term good thing, even if it's not great today has been driven into everyone's head. So it's seen as a benefit in and of itself.

It's also nice to have a border that you don't have to garrison a large portion of your army at. It'd be much harder for the BS to resist the Sketch, or the Khem to resist the Hes if they had to worry about a dispute on our border, so keeping good relations is a good thing for them.
