Oh yeah, we definitely want the thrall to leave...I'll note that in mine as well.

It also occurred to me that given this is one of the places we can buy whetsone cheaply, it provides another cover for our conversation, plus it will make us money when we get to Heredby or wherever on the next leg of our journey.

Other than that I think the differences between our plans are mostly wording; I wrote mine after I saw the update and before I saw your post.

Whetstone is elsewhere, actually, and he may not have anything, but I did add a note asking if he has any goods we could sell in Denmark.

It's in Geirstadt, but when we asked before the last voyage, @Imperial Fister specifically mentioned Jurgdby as somewhere where we could buy it at the time. No idea if there's much available at present, but it's one of Agder's main trade goods along with tar and soapstone. (And the special Hading wood, apparently.)

My one concern is that, if Dorri does have a means of spying, going whole hog on security could be just as much a giveaway that we know something as hearing us say something.

Nah, it might make him suspicious, but he won't know for sure. Very different. Like, if he thinks we're plotting against him with Corpsemaker but doesn't know we know about the Drysalt connection, that's still a better scenario for us than being overheard.

Eh, what the heck, I'll just call it now.

  • [X] Plan Very Private Conversation
-[X] Ask that the thrall leave and put up a Privacy Ward (using Eyespeech to clarify why if needed) and any other useful wards we can think of, while doing so shift all shapeshifts into Sharpened Senses and scan for ants or other listeners and use Owl-Eye Pulse to check for the same, and make sure ants are dead and other listeners are no longer listening, subtly if possible. During discussion, use our social Tricks, including our new lie detection, to make sure Corpsemaker is on the up and up to the best of our ability and stay calm. Use Eyespeech as needed to avoid speaking specific things aloud like Drysalt and Dorri's names...if he has Eyespeech the whole conversation may transition to Eyespeech at some point.
-[X] Start by noting that we do actually have a business deal we want to do, which can be used as an excuse for the meeting if people ask about it, but the main thing we came to tell him is that our father's death was hired work, by someone in the vicinity of the Hading (who hired Alarik and his people). Explain that part of why we turned down his offer when last we talked was that we wanted to focus on figuring out who and dealing with them. At that point, with Eyespeech, tell him that we used divination and came up with two names on who hired it done - Dorri Rattlespear and Drysalt, as well as confirmation they were knowingly working together. Check to make sure he's aware of who Drysalt is and why that's so significant (though we'd assume he probably does). Make it very clear we have no proof of this beyond the divination...but that we intend to acquire it. Try and convince him that doing so might avoid civil war and would be very useful, though that shouldn't be hard. We want to keep this a secret for the most part until we have proof and can destroy Dorri with it utterly.
-[X] Before we leave, do actually negotiate a deal to sell him most of our Healing Clay and some Restful Clay, assuming his prices are reasonable, noting that we already have an ongoing deal with Dorri, so this just makes us look neutral. Maybe also buy some trade goods for our trip to Denmark, if he has them on offer.
[X] Plan A Super Secret Squirrel Conversation
-[X] First, use Eye-Talking to tell Erikaer that we know our enemy is using hidden spies, both spirits, hired men, and small creatures. With his permission we will ask the thrall to leave, and cast a Privacy Ward, Barricade Ward and Lock Seal over the room. Use Owl-Eye Pulse to check for tiny hidden spies or spirits. Cast Raven's Unriddling on both of us whilst telling him what it does, so he can trust what we say and vice-versa.
-[X] Using Eye-Talking, we will then tell Erikaer what we have learned from our divination, that Dorri was behind our father's assassination, that this assassination was organised in synchrony with the raid on the Hading and Dorri is thereby culpable to a some degree for that, and most important of all... that he has allied himself with Drysalt.
-[X] Propose an alliance to defeat this new threat, but ask for time to gather more information so that we can expose him at the Thing. Denying Dorri the support of the Hading's warriors will make the ensuing battle far less costly, which is important given the war is close, and is also important to us personally. We know that Jarl Erikaer does not want to rule over a ruin with no tax revenues or trade.
-[X] Whilst this is going on, keep on a verbal conversation about the clay, and also ask to buy some whetsones given we're going to be travelling to Heredby when we're back from our mission with the missing thrall. If Jarl Corpsemaker has Eye-Talking, then he can reply back to us, otherwise, he can give his responses to our proposal encoded so that it will sound like it is part of the trade conversation.
-[X] Use our Silver-Tongue, Facial Schooling, Cool Off, Goal-Tell and Lie Sense as appropriate.

The thrall bows and leaves the room as Jarl Erikaer watches with clear interest. You kneel and scrawl your desires on the floor, air, and spirits as a ward of privacy falls around you. Spells upon spells slip through your soul as you wield your will like a blade and cleave a space of absolute secrecy from the cloth of reality.

Rising to your feet, you meet the Jarl's eyes with your own Steel, "We can speak freely now."

"Curious spells," Erikaer's lips curl into a wry smile, "but, you have information for me?"

"I do," you nod and take a deep breath, "but, before I get to that, I do actually have a business proposal for you."

He chuckles and waves a flippant hand, "If the information you have is good enough, than I will pay whatever price you ask."

He's... By the Gods, he's serious.

Swallowing your suddenly dry mouth, you get to the task at hand. It's not a good idea to keep a man like Corpsemaker waiting, so you get right to the point—with Eyespeech, of course, "Dorri Rattlespear is working with Drysalt Hadingsbane."

The hearth's fire snuffs out as a chuckle slips free of Corpsemaker's growing grin. His teeth shine like a full moon as his eyes glint with some unknowable glee. His smile lengthens as his chuckle turns to a full-blown laugh.

His hand curls into a fist as he drives it down against the armrest, shaking dust free from the ceiling as the ground itself shivers and shakes. The sudden rattling serves as punctuation for his laughter as, though he stops laughing, his smile stays just as wide.

"That," his eyes shine as lightning leaks free, his control slipping every-so-slightly in his excitement, "is a very valuable piece of information you've given me."

"You..." You frown, managing to wrest control back over your voice, "You believe me, just like that?"

"No man may lie before me, Halla Sunshine," Jarl Erikaer Corpsemaker's words are filled to the brim with unflinching fact as something unfurls in the shadow of his soul. You swallow as you brush up against the edge of his soul and feel the impossible vastness that lies deep within. He dwarfs you in more ways than physical, that much is a simple reality.

"R-right," you stand on unsteady feet as you sway back and forth. Stumbling a step to the side, you shake your head and take a deep breath. Popping the cap on the canteen resting on your hip, you swallow mouthfuls of water as you realize just how dehydrated you suddenly are.

"My deepest apologies," Erikaer stands from the high seat as he helps you to the nearest chair—which happens to be his own. It's... Surprisingly uncomfortable to sit on, with no cushion at all. It's just a hard, wooden surface, "I sometimes find myself testing those gifted few who approach me."

He chuckles as he snatches up a cup from the table and replaces the empty canteen with it, "You did better than most, to your credit. Certainly better than that Lidrun of the Red Scarf." He nods over your shoulder and, as you follow his gaze, you find yourself staring into the yellow eyes of a convulsing Lidrun as she writhes on the floor.

Rising to his feet, he steps around the high seat to where Lidrun seizes in the shadows. "I don't much like eavesdroppers, Lidrun of the Red Scarf," Erikaer says with casual disdain as lightning leaks from his words. "I'll let you live, but this secret stays here with me." His hand presses against Lidrun's face as he pulls the stolen words from her soul. White, silky strands of wispy energy trails from his fingers as Lidrun's convulsions fall flat as her breathing evens out. With a flexing of the hand, he crushes the secret between his fingers as the shadows swallow Lidrun, depositing her beyond the limits of Jurgdby.

Silence stretches as you stare at Erikaer's back, his eyes reflecting off an unlit, bronze light fixture. He chuckles as he turns back towards you, his smile never having left his face, "I believe you had a business offer for me? For Healing and Restful Clay, was it? Well," he chuckles again, "what price would you have me pay?"

...You should probably be fair about this, just a hunch.

Welp. Guessing that's a sign he's in a whole different Realm. Also, Facts may be a new thing?

Also, Lidrun is involved, not surprising, but concerning.

To be clear, is the price of the secret to be added to the clay, or separate?

Well, alrighty then. Good to see again we're still definitely small fry in the world. But hey, people we don't like are working against each other, and that's always fun. Plus we get to sell stuff, yay us!

I think something like 3 oz. silver per unit of Healing Clay and 1/2 oz. per unit of Restful Clay seems fair-ish. That's a big profit for us , but not an unreasonable one compared to what we paid (that's 3 times the price we paid for the Healing, and 4 times for the Restful, but that's not anywhere close to as absurd as some other profits we've made or seen). That'd be this:

[X] Charge him 2875 oz. of silver for 950 units of Healing Clay and 50 of Restful Clay
[X] Head to the Shapecrafter's den

And, as suggested, we should go see a shapecrafter.

Corpsemaker is hyped as hell to get this info.

Also looks like we where right to wary given the fact Lidrun was listening, great to see Corpsemaker took the secret from her.

Any price doesn't mean just money. We could ask for the secret of the next step of cultivation?

Hmmm. I dunno if that even works? Like, Disclosure seems to prevent that as a flat thing. We could ask for a hint, though, on top of maybe a bit less money? Does that seem fair to everyone?

Uh, what's the fair price for the clay?

My impression is that's up to us, though we'd be penalized if we got outrageous with it. What I suggest above seems within the realm of fair to me.

Hot damn, what an update. Jarl Erikaer is indeed very scary.

Don't we want to tell him that we also learnt that Dorri was behind our father's assassination, and by extension is culpable in the raid on the Hading?

]It's less directly relevant to him, but still important context.

He chuckles as he snatches up a cup from the table and replaces the empty canteen with it, "You did better than most, to your credit. Certainly better than that Lidrun of the Red Scarf." Damnit, we could have drawn a little moustache on her face before she disappeared...

EDIT: Also @Imperial Fister, could we buy whetsone here?

Unless the character sheet has yet to be updated, it seems like we still got plenty of money so I would rather ask for something like knowledge or rare artefacts, things that are much harder to get than mere silver.

So, @Imperial Fister , which of our precautions made it impossible for Lidrun to Skald Sneak her way into the conversation without getting caught? Or was this more "Corpsemaker was so thrilled about the outcome that he did us a solid and ensured information security?"
