  • [X] Plan We Just Want To Talk
-[X] Say that we don't want to kill it or take it anywhere, we want to talk to it peaceably and receive information. We desire knowledge. We are willing to make deals as well, if it would like anything specific.
-[X] If it agrees, see if it's willing to discuss its own history, nature, preferences, and abilities, and maybe some stuff about other Cultivation systems.
[X] "Honestly, I just wanted to talk."

"I'm not here to kill or take anyone, I just want to talk." Your words linger in the air like camp smoke as the sword-spirit listens carefully for any hint of deceit. "I'm just looking for answers."

"You are a liar," the words you thought were true darken with the stain of unforeseen nid, "for if you spoke truth, then I would not be here right now."

Shock plays across your face as you stumble back, those invisible tendrils of nid drawing ever-closer, "But that's... I..." You trail off as nid threatens to drill into your soul, to cleave away a portion of your hard-won orthstirr.

What do you do?
[ ] Deny the nid with violence, destroying the sword-spirit in the process
[ ] Deny the nid with your words
-[ ] Write in the rebuttal
[ ] Accept the nid

AN:

Through a simple slip of the tongue, you've wound up on the receiving end of nid. This is not good, to say the least.

You have two—three, really—options here. You can either deny the nid—with your words or violence—or accept it and suffer a loss of orthstirr.

-Using violence will guarantee you not having to suffer nid at the cost of being able to continue interacting with the ice sword.

-Using your words will allow you to avoid taking any nid as long as your rebuttal is effective. You will be allowed to continue interacting with the sword after the fact, no matter the outcome.

-Accepting this nid will cost you orthstirr, but you'll be able to continue interacting with the sword.

No moratorium, good luck and be nice to each other.

I'm confused, "If you wanted to talk I would not be here right now, therefore you are a liar". I'm not sure what the logical leap there is?

We tried to talk, and he just told us to fuck off.

Unless the Nid is just coming from "He's accusing you of being a Liar, he doesn't need to be right, the implication alone forces you to deny it or accept the Nid" Because if that's the case, that's incredibly exploitable.

Wait, why are we getting nid for saying we want answers? I thought that was the reason why we went into the sword in the first place?

You said that you didn't want to take it anywhere, but you've already taken it from Wessex. Thus, a lie from a slip of the tongue.

We tried diplomacy. Let's just end it and study its shards

Don't be a literal child, he's right, Halla took the sword and is now trying to plumb it's secrets, and people thought it wouldn't call them on it. Forgetting that it doesn't like us

Lashing out and smashing something for calling you on your bullshit may avoid Nid, but it's also hiding from your own fuckups. Take it on the chin like an adult.

I'm not sure that would be nid? We're talking about the future not the past. We wanted to take it anywhere, past tense, we do not want to take it anywhere, future tense.

"I call you a liar because you already took me, that I'm within your power doesn't change the fact you took me"

He's right. Just because it's your opinion that previous acts don't matter and it's what's happening right now that's the only thing that matters, doesn't make it true.

Take the bloody nose on the chin like a grown up. Nobody avoids Nid forever. Maybe it'll remind people to watch their words in the future.

If we wanted to avoid it with words via being pedantic we could go the angle of "no, I'm not *here* to take you anywhere right now"

Oh, the spirit is right that we took it, it's wrong that we lied. We were talking about what we want now, our future intentions, not our entire history and everything we've ever done in the past, y'know?

[X] Accept the nid

I mean, if there's nid we take it, I guess, I'm just very dubious talking about our future intentions should result in nid based on something we did in the past. People change, their goals change, their intentions change.

We should be able to say 'We don't intend to raid Frisia' and, if we're telling the truth, not get nid even though we raided Frisia once before, y'know? Past actions may predict future behavior but they aren't the same thing.

The deed is already done, promising not to do something you've already done and can't be taken back is bullshit weasel wording, and he rightfully called it out.

Fair enough, I will. Sorry, just woke up. Upon reflection, I think the problem is its past sight thing and thus issues with automatically assuming any past behavior will be repeated. No human would mistake tenses that way, I don't think. But we've surprised it before by doing something new. I think that may be the key.

[X] Deny the nid with your words
-[X] "I didn't say I hadn't taken you anywhere before, I said I wasn't here to take you anywhere else in the future. I know you predict people by their past, but I've surprised you by doing new things before...humans are not only the sum of our pasts, though it's an important part of us. Saying I will do something different going forward does not make it a lie."

There, that's my attempt to get through to it.

Lets try to avoid getting a kick in the magic

Except we didn't say we previously didn't want to take it anywhere, we said in the present tense that we don't want to take it anywhere, and we don't. We are happy where it is at right now. At this point we just want answers from it.

Nid-less playthrough is still a go.

Yeah, as I went into above, I think this is a fundamental issue with its mentality. It believes past behavior is perfectly predictive...that's how we beat its bearer in a fight, by doing something new. So it thinks we're lying because we did that once which, in its mind, means we'll do it again.

We're not taking nid for lying per se, we're taking it for being called a liar unless we do something about it. That kind of insult demands a response in Norse culture. Explaining how we're not a liar and getting it to withdraw the accusation should work, hopefully.
