Calling something/someone a 'troll' can be a way to describe something decidedly *not* human that chose to be that way. Using 'Troll' as a title (the only time you'll see it capitalized in-story, aside from at the beginning of sentences) confers the understanding that this person has gone beyond human norm in a sort of stupidly stubborn, troll-like fashion.

All trolls are Trolls, but not all Trolls are trolls.
So does that mean that trolls (like the one Horra killed) have a choice to be something other than a troll?

Or am I misreading this?

Further notes on trolls;

Interesting. We definitely want to talk first and find out what kind of troll we're dealing with, then.

Anyway, I thought we needed a prototype of our Plate design before we can start cracking at the metaphysical parts?

I didn't think we needed it to investigate the existing set? We probably can't apply anything we get without a prototype but we should be able to poke at the Knightly Armor and try and figure out how it works?

All trolls are Trolls, but not all Trolls are trolls.

To make matters worse, some trolls aren't trolls either. Some are thurs—a kind of troll-like creature that are hyper-aggressive and don't turn to stone in the sunlight. Modern scientists theorize that perhaps most recorded troll attacks were actually caused by thurs, as the two species look superficially similar.

They also might be a skogtroll, a type of creature that turns into a tree during day and a troll-like creature at night. Generally placid—unless you damage wood in any way in their sight, in which case they reveal the power earned as a result of sacrificing the day away. As they aren't very intelligent, they may believe that you've just killed a family member if they see you chopping down a tree.

That was extremely educative and extremely confusing at the same time, so basicaly like studying actual mythology. Good job IF.

I added planting one of them this turn. We only have the Odr to grow one so no point in planting the others as of yet.

Okay, fair enough.

Not necessarily Knightly Armor, but definitely Plate Armor of some sort is the plan, yeah.

Will we add stuff like plates, bracers and greaves to Emberguard?

Because otherwise it would feel like a waste making Emberguard just to replace it with another armor.

The plan has always been to add Runes to increase our strength on it. It just kept getting delayed. We should actually have time within the next few turns.

Good idea.

It's useful specifically when planning on having a kid. Odds are we'll see Aki and be trying to recruit him to come back with us before we need that again. We may make one anyway, but it's not a super high priority.

I didn't think it was a priority, just a useful thing to have.

Most of what makes Emberguard really amazing is Socket Stones. Without those (which could easily be moved to Plate Armor), it's still nice but not outrageous. We'll see what options are available at the time...I think that's still a ways out (which is why we did Emberguard now...we're likely to appreciate the vast survivability upgrade at some point before we complete working plate armor).

... A Norse scientist would be a Seer(ess) wouldn't they? Either that, or a Shapecrafter.

Seers do science and are thus scientists. Shapecrafters do MAD SCIENCE!!! and are thus MAD SCIENTISTS!!!

Highly important distinction (like that between trolls and thurs) as while the two may be mistaken for each other superficially their behavior patterns are quite distinct.

Would it be worth buying a few secrets off the dwarves? They can't help us with the metaphysical parts, but they probably know a bit about articulation and how to get all the parts to work together well.
(Assuming they have rigid armour technology themselves, which I assume they do)

I don't think this works...all the stories we heard from the Skald that resulted in Twists were seemingly true. I think the story needs to be true in order to serve as the structure for a Twist.
If you look at the "throw stuff at the Wall and See what Sticks" list again, you'll note that 0 of the ideas are about making up a fake story.

I think maybe we need an important muna, then to write a poem/story about it and to infuse the combination with Odr? Something like that anyway.
An important muna... like kiss under a falling tree?

Would be funny if we had the right experiment for it all this time (before we even unlocked the ability to make twists).

On an unrelated note, I was reading about ancient Celtic beliefs, and are the Celts/Brittons/Gaelics of this world Christianized by this point? If creatures of Norse myth like dwarfs and trolls exist, what about feyfolk, Tuatha Dé Danann or the sídhe?

I'm pretty sure we've completed the actual physical part of the armour, it's just the esoteric parts of it that we need to research.

Trying to buy secrets off the dwarves will end poorly.

Yeah, I recall that "troll-women" being a kenning which is used a few times in Egil's Saga and seems to related to the belief that troll-women ride around on wolves? Quite different to the stereotypical image of a fantasy troll as a big lumbering monster. Also "moon bears" is a kenning for giants, which is wild.

Oh, also, this reminds me for some reason...

You know how we can Alloy two tricks together? If we do that, can the mastery level of the Alloyed Trick start as an aggregate of the underlying ones, same as how Forgefire's rank is an aggregate of Ignition and Campfire? That follows the same underlying logic, and means we don't have to spend a lot of training dice on it - which seems reasonable given Alloying individual Tricks rather than Hugareida or Twists or whatever is already sacrificing some flexibility. Also, we kind of need to, there's not really a mechanical difference between Alloying Tricks and just sort of combining them as inspiration for a new Trick as we've done previously..

I think there's more to it than that, but we can try playing around with it.

Per IF one advantage is that it takes an Alloy Slot but not Capacity, until you learn it 'for real'. We can then use them immediately or buy them 'for real' with the latter allowing us to de-assign the Alloy when they hit Refined.

:p

I am now picturing a Norse cultivator from this setting who wears a lab coat and has a bunch of tricks themed around a Grad School Shenanigans hugareida. :D

Modern Scientist Who Fell Through a Time Portal: "Now, modern research tells us that Thurs are actually extremely skittish creatures and have poor eyesight, which is why they often attack when startled. If we're calm and make no sudden movements whilst appearing large, then it should go back into the forest."

Halla: "Uhm..."

Modern Scientist Who Fell Through a Time Portal: "OH SWEET JESUS CHRIST IT'S NOT SKITTISH, IT'S GOT MY LEG, HELP ME, HELP ME!"

Anyone have any last minute inclusions they want in the plan? I don't promise to add them, but they sure aren't getting added if not suggested before time runs out.

Do we want to keep feeding Bjorney Odr, for instance? I'm not sure on that one actually, though I lean 'no for now'.

should we talk to bjorney or atleast study them in a non intrusive way? getting to know a newly awakened cultivator and learning of their experiences could be usefull before going up a realm.
if it can be done in research then id be willing to put a reward die towards it.

I think we probably want to go for multiples of three, but also now he's sapient maybe he should get some input. He's still a child at the end of the day; there's probably limits to how much we can or should try to turn him into the Legendary Super Bear before he's fully grown. Otherwise... I mean there's various stuff, I think we should practice entering someone's soul with Abjorn for example, but it can wait.

Maybe just check in with him a bit? Offer him lessons like we're giving to our other kids?

If we could find a way to shoehorn in the poem for Abjorn, then having Lidrun here would be a great time to do it since she can post it on Skaldic Twitter. But that's a whole action slot and I'd rather go see the troll, and we'll see her again probably if we're doing a trading trip this turn and swing by Jurgdby.

I have no idea if that can be done with research, but I'll add it in as such, since you're spending the Reward Die. Presumably if it's unavailable the die will be refunded.
