This is a lot of fun though! I'm anxious, but it's the kind of anxious that I can deal with instead of just huddle away from.

Okay, so, looking back at that Gunnar Hámundarson was Njal's best friend (and Njal being unmanly is A Thing), a ridiculous warrior, and died after his wife refused to help him because he hit her after she committed a crime (a crime for a crime). It's him.

I'm convinced, I think.

He has also not been born yet
Hmmm...that timeline also seems off, if perhaps not as strongly.

I would strongly suggest we don't get too bung up on timelines here?

If we're going by strict chronology, then the Varangian Guard should not exist as a formalised thing yet. Also, Attila the Hun should have died millennia ago, not fought Blackhand's father/grandfather. Alfred the Great and Charlemagne were not contemporaries.

I think we can reasonably assume that Norsequest is a kind of looser, more mythic universe taking inspiration from lots of time periods, and if we've heard of a Saga, there's a decent chance Halla has.

I think Exmorri got it.
Way out there speculation, mostly for generating further interpretations: can we interpret this as being about Baldr (Balder)? He's the minor Norse god of light and purity and joy.
Baldr is a god, he should be know to Halla and other vikings.....
But a human who wasn't even born yet.... Well, how would they have a Saga without being born?

a tale soon to be told (fearsome hill)
a tale soon to be told:

Heklr, son of giants
hardened himself heckling headless hens
to face his worst fear
a warrior with attitude
and wit without fear
on this day he knew defeat
for the warrior wielded words
tales told in distant lands
with them she willed his wit to yield
and sink back in the sea
with no meat to mend his morning
and no mead to lick his lips

Not great at this and its late here. But want to say Lying Island can also mean lying as in to lie down on a bed, for example. Or as you would say an island lies between (someplace) and (other place)

All I know is, we need to up our game on our own riddles, because while we may be able to figure out this one, I'm pretty sure too many more like this will be the death of Halla.

Anyway, as long as the Warded Post is out of consideration, then using a Reward Die to check on a Final Answer is probably safe-ish.

Nothing's perfectly safe, but I don't see anything else that would Ruin Everything Forever.

Gunnar Hámundarson seems the most plausible to me.

I don't think Baldr fits because "crime for crime" implies reciprocity of some kind; that one of the crimes is in response to the other.

Look if your going to take a peek just go for this one it has all our answers. Trust me.
HAHAHA!!! YOU FOLLISHLY FOOLISH FOOL! YOU TRUSTED ME!

"Heklr picks up your boat and breaks it in two."

I'm willing to take the risk, I think it's good, but there might be some Galaxy Brain stuff going on here.
