Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

For the love of... Look, the only thing that can affect the making of Templates is a Mana source- Making our own parts? The materials for them aren't available on Bet, we have to wait. There's been enough discussion about this, either read the thread or check the FAQ.
Since you're so insistent upon reading the thread, I went and found the post I was talking about, though I was a bit off on the details.
3. Consuming several Devices and using their pieces for the framework and their internal generators for the actual template duplication.
You were saying? This method would also not require Taylor to be a battery, if I read the post right.

I had interpreted this as PS also not needing as long to recover, since the framework was coming from the scavenged devices, but some of SW's other posts disagree.

"Kidnapping" is going a bit far. She's coming to us and then leaving, and we aren't offering her any habitation. The rest, you start balancing issues of "Did Shipwright know we would disapprove of his actions?", "Did Shipwright act in good faith?", and "How far are we willing to prosecute a group of heroes over this, up to and including the risk of turning an ally into an enemy?".
Ah...so we basically do it without asking anyone, then be liedetector proof surprised IC that the PRT has a problem with it?

Implanting the reactor and connector is a day surgery procedure like a lot of orthopedics cases are. She would tell the PRT that she needs a personal day, arrive in the morning, have the surgery, and leave in the afternoon. Then it would be a matter of coming back for check ups and a little boost to scarification for the next couple of days before fitting the prosthetic.
Ah. When you said the operation would take a day I figured you meant the whole day. Similarly when you mentioned a couple days recovery I assumed you meant a couple days staying at our medical facility to make sure no complications occurred.

Knowing that we can get Vista home for dinner makes things a lot easier.

Hm... I think we are a bit too hung up on the Gadgeteer solution. I wonder how good at healing Infinite Enhancement is.

EDIT:
Oh wait, there was something about the freshness of the injury, wasn't there?
Whether it's a question of freshness or just the fact her whole limb is amputated rather then mangled is unknown. We do know it's beyond healing:
Hmm. Would this allow us to heal Vista?
When she was first injured, yes, Infinite Enhancement could have healed her. Not now.

If you build several Devices, you can sacrifice them to get one template. There is still a goodly recharge time unless you plug PS into a large-scale reactor.

@Silently Watches

I've actually watched the four Nanoha Animes now (which were really quite enjoyable once I realised that they live in a turn-based JRPG) and browsed the Nanoha Wiki. Which, inevitably, means that I have a couple of questions:

1. The Wiki says that that Familiars share their masters' spells. Is that true in this quest and, if so, does that mean that A) Samantha could help us make Cartridges and/or B) that learning Knight's Armor would improve Samantha's Inherent Forcefield?

2. It also says that

When Ancient Belkan cartridge system is used to provide mana support for Midchildan magic system, it is referred as a hybrid cartridge system (ハイブリッドカートリッジシステム haiburiddo kātorijji shisutemu), although due to safety and stability problems, e.g. the strain on user, it was not widely used for a long time. To maintain stability in battle, Intelligent Devices like Raising Heart Exelion and Bardiche Assault provide feedback to their master and exercise tight control over the cartridge system usage.[1]

By the time of StrikerS, however, cartridge systems are said to have become much more reliable to use. This is thanks to Mariel Atenza's research on Laevatein and Graf Eisen, as well as the operation data of Raising Heart Exelion and other Devices (e.g. Bardiche Assault),[2] after their masters have joined the Administrative Bureau.

Do you take this to mean that Midchilda made Cartridge Systems are now as safe and reliable as the Ancient Belka ones or that Mariel managed to improve upon the design and make it even safer to use than the originals? If the latter, would we be able to barter/trade/steal that technology from TSAB so that we can guzzle cartridges the same way Nanoha does?

3. Will Shipwright ever be able to make magitek trans-dimensional teleporters like they have on TSAB ships? If so, how difficult would it be to build a small station in the Dimensional Sea as an HQ for the Privateers?

This I'm mostly ignoring because it gives the opportunity to make familiars that complement the mage's strengths and weaknesses, such as Samantha being a physical fighter where you are a ranged fighter. Some spells do cross over, but defenses don't, (Hint: Samantha's Inherent Forcefield is already Knight Armor equivalent.)

I'm going to say no, just because the way Nanoha uses them is not at all safe.

Building a transporter he could do once he learns the spell. Building a Dimensional Sea base like the Garden of Time…? That requires far more in resources than he has now or will conceivably have in the future.

Soooo, I have a couple of questions for you, @Silently Watches!

First: given that the Linker Core has a physical manifestation in this quest in the form of nerves on the spinal column, would Panacea be able to either modify an active mage's LC or expand one in a normal human?

Second: I know it's been beaten to death, but would Tim being registered as a PRT affiliate if he isn't already through association by Privateers help with the veto process for things like, say, a telepathic nullifier?

I suppose theoretically yes to the first and maybe possibly to the second, but remember what I said about how the drain of Ragnarök would kill you via the shock to your system? The same would happen to someone whose Linker Core Amy messed with.
Second: I know it's been beaten to death, but would Tim being registered as a PRT affiliate if he isn't already through association by Privateers help with the veto process for things like, say, a telepathic nullifier?
No. The issue with his tech isn't that he isn't a PRT affiliate. It's that he would be considered a bio-Tinker and no other Tinker can understand his tech.

Maskless 6.10

Thursday, April 28

You slide your hands over the blue, backpack-sized shell sitting on the table and look up at Tim. "It's smaller than I thought it was going to be. When we talked about a generator, I was expecting something more in line with an emergency generator or something. Especially when you said you would design it to run off gasoline."

"I thought so, too, but when I started flipping through Sextant's blueprint library, I saw that there were several different designs that all had more or less the same effectiveness," the accountant turned Tinker says with a shrug. "This isn't even the smallest one. Far from it. It was one of the easier designs to get working, though. The smaller ones, especially those that are meant to be put in people's bodies, look a lot trickier." He shrugs. "Shouldn't be too bad, though, now that I've finished this one. I bet they'll be easier to build sooner or later."

"Sooner, hopefully," you mutter quietly. "And speaking of implants…"

"Don't worry. I got your email. No promises, but I'll give it my best shot. No little girl deserves to go around crippled."

Vista probably wouldn't take being called a little girl well, but if she knew what you and Tim were planning, you expect she would hold her tongue. Tim had confided in you that when he went digging around Sextant's memory banks for blueprints for power armor, he also found designs for all different kinds of prosthetics with similar properties. He doubted the other Privateers would take kindly to him asking to chop off their limbs, an opinion you agree with, but you know someone who won't mind the chance to receive a new arm.

You just need to contact her and figure out how in the world you make this kind of an offer.

Your dad and Tim make smalltalk for a while before the second of the Privateers' mage has to take his leave. "What do you need this for, anyway, Taylor?" your dad asks when he returns to the pitch from showing the man out. "You've been tight-lipped about it, even for you."

Ouch. On the one hand, that comment really is not true. You have been very open with him, a lot more than you used to be. Just… not about everything. On the other, and dogging the heels of the first thought, this is one of those things you have not told him about. You don't know that you want to, either. Somehow, you just know he will see keeping your contact with an alien civilization a secret as a grounding-worthy offense.

Normal teenage girls get their phones taken away. You lose access to an interstellar radio. Same difference, right?

"Storm needed more power for something," you tell him instead. That is mostly true, and it is still vague enough that he should, if you're lucky, assume it's something technical and boring…

"Oh, okay. Do you need any help getting it upstairs?"

In lieu of answering, you pick it up and cradle it in your arms. Not that heavy, either. "I think I can manage."

Once you have reached your bedroom, you set the generator down next to the radio itself. You are very tempted to plug it in and switch it on, but you steel yourself. As important as the next conversation with the space wizards – or at least Enforcer Command – is, you know you cannot go off half-cocked. This is something that needs to be properly planned, with great thought given to how you're going to both make a good impression on them on behalf of your planet and how to make sure they provide any help with the Endbringers they can offer.

Thankfully, you have a wise dragon on your side.

"Storm, I need you to compose an email to Dragon. Let her know that we now have a generator that will power the radio, and we can call them whenever is convenient for her. It sounded like this TSAB might be willing to help us with the Simurgh or even all the Endbringers, so any information she could have ready to go shen we talk to them would be appreciated." You stop and think for a second. "And, you know, if she has a first-contact package or something that she's been working on in the meantime, that probably wouldn't go amiss, either."

«Composing message.»

"Oh, and give her any information you have on the TSAB, too," you add on as an afterthought. "Maybe if we tailor the message to whatever the group—"

«Request impossible.» You stare at the Device in befuddlement, so Perfect Storm helpfully explains, «No information regarding 'TSAB' or 'Enforcer Command' in memory files. Likely group encountered recently. Newer records most heavily corrupted.»

And Perfect Storm's amnesia raises its ugly head again. "What can you guess about them after our little chats?"

«Not Imperial organization. Unlikely Galean in origin. Too diplomatic for Belkan affiliation. Analysis of diction and syntax most similar to Molse subjugates. Possibility for Molsan or Kataric former colony. Multi-world mercenary force versus new minor alliance not unreasonable.»

'Galea' you know, and 'Belka' has popped up very occasionally; mostly you know they were the main enemies of the Galean Empire. But Molse? Katar? You can only assume these are other worlds. How many planets are there with intelligent, magic-wielding life on them? Do you even want to know?

"Calamity Witch, this is Protectorate Console," comes from your Device in a young boy's voice. "Assistance needed. Please respond."

How did the Protectorate Console get your number? Oh, wait. You told Miss Militia to call you if the tensions between Winter Hill and MS-13 broke out into open fighting. "Calamity Witch here. What's the situation?"

"Oh, thank goodness. There's a situation at the intersection of Greene and Wabash. MS-13 attacked a PRT transport, and they have them pinned down hard. Chevalier, Sere, and Miss Militia are moving in to help get them out, but Winter Hill's capes and normal gang members came out of nowhere, too, even if they're going after MS-13 instead of us…" The cape, you think Cherry Bomb but maybe Flambe, trails off for several long seconds."Oh, crap. Sere says Cadejo just showed up."

A thought shuts off the call, and you transform into your Barrier Jacket. No doubt having heard the entire conversation, a gigantic badger-raccoon storms into your room. «You better not be thinking about going off alone,» Samantha says. «If you're wading into a gang war, you need me watching your back.»

"Wouldn't have it any other way," you tell her with complete honesty. Opening the window, the two of you race towards downtown. It's time to give somebody a bad day.

Charge Cartridge learned.

  • Jotunn, leader of the Winter Hill gang. Much like Menja and Fenja, he grows larger and tougher, but his maximum size is only ten feet tall. Too bad he also has a freezing touch.
  • Cailleach. Blaster with both a cone of cold or a larger and slower ice bomb.
  • Solaire. A pyrokinetic who flips between offense with a burning sword and defense with fire armor.
  • Pounce. A cat-themed speedster.
This is what you get for volunteering for something. Against which group will your abilities do the most good?
[ ] Winter Hill capes – Truce or not, this is the most powerful gang in the city. Hit them hard, and hit them fast.
[ ] Cadejo – Payback's a bitch, isn't it? For Vista!
[ ] Winter Hill mooks – They're shooting at the MS-13 now, but who says they won't turn on the heroes if they get a chance?
[ ] MS-13 mooks – They're the ones who have the PRT pinned down, after all.

For one, it's not something her shard-enhanced medical knowledge would be sure about. Which means if she fucks up, said mage either dies or is crippled beyond her ability to fix, possibly permanently.

More or less the reason I'm asking. Just imagine it: we tell Alexandria or the Triumvirate how magic works and in the conversation comes up the Linker Cores, but wouldn't you know? The PRT has not one, but two bio-kinetics in custody. I mean, it would just be logical to try and produce artificial mages. And if, you know, we went and applied it some expanded neural capacity to facilitate spell-casting, or giving it to a parahuman, the worst that could happen is that it doesn't work, right?

So MECHs are out of the question.

Calling aliens, not a problem.
Not telling Dad you called aliens, big problem.
Continuing to not tell Dad you called aliens, an ever-increasingly big problem.

Aaaaand world-building gets cut off by what we expected: Assholes being assholes.

VENGEANCE!

So Dark Souls exists on Bet.

We hit you with lethal Solar Wrath, you can't hurt anybody.
This is what you get for volunteering for something. Against which group will your abilities do the most good?
Do you want tactics write-ins now or not?

MS-13 attacked a PRT transport, and they have them pinned down hard. Chevalier, Sere, and Miss Militia are moving in to help get them out, but Winter Hill's capes and normal gang members came out of nowhere, too, even if they're going after MS-13 instead of us…"
MS-13 is getting quite bold, I see. Small mercies that Winter Hill is focused on them rather than the PRT/Protectorate forces on site.

Solaire. A pyrokinetic who flips between offense with a burning sword and defense with fire armor.
Ahahaha. Time to show this guy/gal the true meaning of "Grossly Incandescent". :D

*Looks at choices*
Hm. I have an urge to get payback on Cadejo, but all the same, aiding the PRT takes precedence over a grudge imo, no matter how justified that grudge is.

Winter Hill capes – Truce or not, this is the most powerful gang in the city. Hit them hard, and hit them fast.
-Assess wheter they are attacking the PRT or hostile. If they are:
-Have Samanthe engage Solaire, given her abilities hard-counters his.
-If possible and no allies are immediately on the line of fire, open the fight with not-lethal Solar Wrath for crowd control, favoring hitting either Jottun and Cailleach.
Cadejo – Payback's a bitch, isn't it? For Vista!
- Set all spells to lethal against him.
-Favor targeted Flare Shooters over Solar Wrath- people are already associating us with Behemoth, no need to make needless colateral.

See my reply above the story post.

I saw it right after I hit post. :lol

EDIT: Changing my vote.

I think you need to pick just one, since the text above the choices says "group", not "groups".

I think you need to pick just one, since the text above the choices says "group", not "groups".

The briefing they gave us makes it seem as if the fight is happening in a rather tight area. My idea is that Sam goes up against Winter Hill while we (if possible) launch a broad strike and then we focus in neutralizing Cadejo as quickly as possible.

Also, no plan survives contact with the enemy, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't think of tactics that could serve as guidelines.

Honestly, I think we should go after MS-13 or Cadejo. Though more Cadejo since he's very willing to use lethal force, and we have the best means to subdue him fast and assist the PRT with MS-13.

Though going for MS-13 would help to improve relations between us and the Philly PRT, and if we manage to take them out that's one of the major gangs taken care of.

I wouldn't suggest going after Cadejo until after Taylor learns Telekinesis.

Though I suppose if we really want him dead, we can use Recursion Field and get all allies out of the blast radius before we drop the nuke on him.
