It's a Girl's World -- And Lilly wants Adventure

I'm pretty sure we actually have Core Anchor. From what I understand, the Evie votes (sans foundational ethos) are probability distributions now, and we happened to roll Core Anchor. I mean, we do have a [Core Heart], after all.
From my understanding, it's more like 55% Exalted Flesh, 45% Core Anchor. So it's a mix of both.
(After some Randomizing:| Exalted Flesh: 55% Core Anchor: 45% Will Form: 0%)

Non-Canon Omake: It's a Girl's World — And Ruffles is a Good Girl!
It's a Girl's World — And Who's a Good Girl! Ruffles is a Good Girl! Yes She is!
The Adventure of Ruffles, the secretly sentient dog and her trusty unwitting sidekicks Sally and Tunia. I guess Lilly can come too. Ruffles knows she is Best Dog. But is she Best Dog enough to save us all?

...Alrighty then.

Ruffles Quest!

As per your solemn duty as Best Dog, you continue your patrol of the streets of Harmuph. You're still trying to make a list of who made it through the Night of the Bad Dogs and who didn't. You were able to wake up Sally and the rest of your human family in time so they could use their hands to move the furniture to block the windows and doors, but apparently some others weren't as lucky. Tunia made it through alright, but you haven't seen the baker boy who would toss you the old pastries when nobody else was looking. Everyone smells a little sad, especially the ones who seem to be buying flowers. Part of you is a bit mad when SHE made it through when others died. Yes, it's a Naughty Girl thought, but you don't know how much longer…

A familiar scent catches your nose. You eagerly, hopefully run back to the stables near the town entrance and YES! Chariot the Wonder Horse is alive! You happily bark at him, and ask him if his humans are alright. And boy, does he have a story to tell!

You had wondered about Lilly, one of Sally's friends, who you hadn't seen in a while. Chariot says that she had run away from the house for an awful long time, and the family was sad for weeks, and put some flowers on the door (Do humans just buy flowers when they are sad?). But then Lilly suddenly came back one day, only she smelled like trees and old dirt. At first, Chariot thought that she had just gone rolling around in the forest, but no, she just smells like that now. And apparently she gives what Chariot calls the Good Pets, that help Chariot understand a bit of what Lilly wants, let him see and hear all around him, and let him run forever. He knows he can run forever, because that's what he ended up doing on the Night of the Bad Dogs.

Lilly took him out for a run towards Harmuph, but then she stopped and lay down on the ground (while the Bad Dogs were howling, why!?), and then a tentacle thing came out of Lilly's chest (do humans give birth to tentacle things?). Chariot was scared, but then Lilly's Good Pets let Chariot know that the tentacle thing was a Hidey Friend, so that was good. They kept on running, and Lilly threw some rocks at the Bad Dogs, and the Hidey Friend poked at them, and Chariot even kicked one in the face! They finally made it to Harmuph after the town humans fought off the Bad Dogs that were chasing them. Then he sat around for a bit, but then Lilly got a bunch of town humans with horses to follow them back to the house. Lilly was somehow to give EVERYONE the Good Pets, even without touching them, and they beat up all the Bad Dogs they ran into! Then Lilly went with Chariot and some other humans into the forest, but then Chariot saw some Bad Dogs, a few Bad Horned Horses, and a Big Bad Brown Predator! Chariot was too scared and ran away, and he was almost heartbroken when he saw the town humans carry her out, but she was apparently just sleeping, so they brought her into the house and she didn't come out for two whole days.

Then Lilly woke up yesterday, but Chariot thinks something bad happened. A Big Horse showed up with a bunch of regular horses and some humans, and one of the humans looked like they were going to give Lilly a present for beating up all the Bad Dogs, but the human grabbed her instead and started dragging her while she was screaming. It looked like she was about to leave with the Big Horse, but then the town humans pulled out their metal pointers at the Big Horse humans, and the Big Horse humans ran away. One of the humans gave Lilly a flower, but it must have been a Mad Flower instead of a Sad Flower, because Lilly threw it on the ground and stomped on it. Chariot thinks Lilly is scared that the Big Horse will come back someday and get its humans to carry her away.

…You take all this in and try to consider it. Chariot can get details wrong sometimes, but he generally doesn't intentionally lie. This Lilly might be in trouble, or at the very least will require further investigation. You thank Chariot for the news, give a sniff to his saddle to get Lilly's scent, and then make your way back into the streets. Sure enough, you follow the scent of oak and earth and find a familiar half-sized little girl, who seems to be looking around for something. Now, should you watch from afar? No, the best way to determine a human's character is obvious: you go right up to them and ask for pets. Good humans always pet Good Dogs, it is a fundamental rule of the world.

You had hoped to sneak up close to her, but she turns toward you right away as you approach. "Oh, you're Sarah's dog, aren't you?" She reaches down to scratch you behind the ears, and then you feel the Good Pets Chariot had mentioned. It fills you up, makes you feel awake from nose to tail, and makes all the little aches and pains just melt away. "Now, what was your name, again?"

Why, you're Ruffles, the smartest dog in the world, of course.

Lilly immediately stops, pulls her hand back, and stares at you for a few seconds. "Did.." She glances left and right to see if anyone was watching. "Did you just talk?"

…Wait, did this human just understand you? Have you finally found someone who is not just human-smart, but Ruffles-smart?

No, no, that's just silly. Nobody's Ruffles-smart but Ruffles; it's a lonely position at the top, but such is the dignity and duty of being the Best Dog. Lilly might have a few tricks, but I doubt she's capable of even being a contender for Sarah's position of Best Human.

"This can't be happening. Why does this keep happening to me?"

See, this Lilly-girl's already getting confused about what is or isn't happening. But this opens up so many possibilities. You could tell her where to scratch your itches, you can get her to buy the pig's ears from the butcher instead of trying to root through the trash, you could warn somebody about Death-Smelling Girl, you could explain to Sarah how to mark her territory-

"Wait, Death-Smelling Girl?"

Oh My Dog, yes! Someone needs to be told about Death-Smelling Girl. She's a bit taller than Lilly, not Sarah, not Tunia, dang it, what's the human sound for her?

"…Myah?"

Yes, Myah! Oh, how do people not smell her for what she is? She gives the Bad Pets! No, not like the pets that human babies give when they brush the fur the wrong way, you mean the Bad Pets that make everyone sleepy and icky. Myah tried to give Bad Pets to you once, but then you wriggled out of her grasp and barked at her, and then Myah started crying. You've seen her give Bad Pets to the humans who sleep outside at night. You also followed her into the woods where she found a squirrel caught in a snare and gave it the Bad Pets until it stopped moving and then it started moving again but gave off a foul odor. Then Myah screamed and smashed it with a rock and buried it, and then she started crying again. You've tried barking whenever she shows up, but Sarah doesn't understand and tells you to be quiet. You've thought about maybe biting her, but then that would put you in range of the Bad Pets! You don't know what to do!

"…I…might be able to help with that. I want to talk to Myah, and see if I can stop her from…giving Bad Pets anymore. Could you help me find her?"

…Oh. Oh, of course. Lilly can use her Good Pets to cancel out the Bad Pets, and then Myah can just give regular pets that are good enough for anyone. But wait, I thought Lilly's Good Pets allowed her to see everywhere.

"…How did you know about that?"

You had talked to Chariot, of course. He had quite the story about you.

"You can talk to…You know what, I can't digest this right now. My…abilities aren't the best at finding an individual that I haven't connected with. I can tell that there are 5 people and a few mice in this house we're standing in front of, but I can't pick out who is who at a glance. Could you possibly get Myah's scent and find out where she is?"

…See, this is why humans are always left behind in these matters: nothing replaces a good nose. Well, now the plan is clear! You shall lead this Lilly to Myah and they will be able work together to stop the Plague of Bad Pets! Soon, this will be another successful mission completed by Ruffles, Best Dog!

The big thing holding me back from omake myself is how little we know about the setting T_T

Maybe the infodump coming up will help.

I am imagining Ruffles's Ethos now:

[Man's Best Friend] (Apotheotic) Deific | Unique
Someone once said, "Dog is man's best friend." Unfortunately, no one thought to examine how that friendship began; had they known the truth they may have chosen different words: for is the worker bee the friend of the queen? The arm the friend of the brain? All those who come in contact with you find themselves intrigued by you, then entranced by you, then enthralled by you. What begins as an innocent-seeming attraction to your cuteness soon becomes a single-minded imperative to see your will done. One dog in the right place can find entire nations bending to their will, upending power structures intractable for millennia all to find that perfect chew toy that just so happens to be in the neighboring country's yard. Ask not for whom the dinner bell tolls, it tolls for thee.

I actually think we already may have a pretty good chance to handle Valerie with our actual powers.

Basically, we know that "Subversion" works better on us than on other people and we know that most of the changes it could make on ourself can be healed thanks to [My Resolution, Thy Bedrock]. We also know that this power works similar to those of the demons and that it can influence even integral parts of a person, like their connection to their own ethos.

Now, what do us readers know about what can likely happen when a demon is forced to obey the orders of an hostile being?
They try to twist them to their advantages (we would twist ourself in this case), until they get the shot to kill them. And that's exactly what Lilly could already be able to do.

So, even if we get caught under Valerie's powers, we should be able to twist her orders in a way that may allow our protagonist's temporarily subverted personality to at least kill her. For example, if Valerie ordered to Lilly to "shut up and cut your tongue", the latter, thanks to subversion, would probably be able to do things like cutting Valerie's head off, crush her body, use her skull's teeth to cut her own tongue, and then heal herself. All of this without necessarily suffer permanent changes to her own personality or body.

Now, there are problem even with this: Valerie may simply give Lilly only specific orders, even if [Cleaver of Fortune] plus how difficult it actually is to do something like that all the time make it unlikely. To not talk about the fact that Valerie's patron may suspect we have a creature similar to itself with us, something that may bring her to be more warded when dealing with Lilly. And there would be the problem with what was actually the last order Valerie issued.

So, this is mostly something to consider if we don't find something else to reliably use, or if we fall under one of her orders anyway. Especially because this may still be possible even after we failed a previous attempt with something else.

However, no matter what, we should be cautious in the way we will deal with Valerie.

I'd prefer to deal with Valerie fatally, from a distance, and without warning, but that's not really in Lillys character even if we had the ability and foreknowledge.

The big thing holding me back from omake myself is how little we know about the setting T_T

Maybe the infodump coming up will help.

Take chances! Make mistakes! In the immortal words of Bender, "I don't recall fighting Godzilla, but that is so what I would have done."

To be fair, I'm also waiting on the conversation to fill in some blanks. I've got a partially drafted omake about Yolun and Captain Martin having a conversation after everyone knows the secret. Well, less a conversation and more Yolun yelling, "You sent a girl who had held a mace for less than 12 hours into a dungeon? What the hell, man!?"

World Map B1 2.3
If someone could be so kind, I'm looking to threadmark all posts that unlocked a secret challenge as well as all of my posts that acknowledged and awarded a boon for them. A quote from each would be super helpful.

Are Inverted Ethea something you would feel as discrete information, or is that just something you might extrapolate from the impression you get from them?
You extrapolate it. In much the same way you can extrapolate that your car is crashing from observing the windshield and walls imploding inwards.
Whether that's a bad thing is up to you. Evie didn't have a problem suggesting more frequent inverted Ethea as one of her enhancement options in 'Slipping between the Cracks'.

Writing continues apace. In the meantime, people can have look at the new world map you're now aware of as of 2.3

Dat's a big boi map.

It's essentially the SE quadrant of human occupied territory this side of the ocean.
Tosliav is on another continent and would be about 7-8 times the size of Narisell.
Other than that, it is all 'monster' lands.

Could you write down the mottoes on the heraldry? Kinda hard to make out in the image.

Secret Challenges up to 2.2
Here are the secret challenge posts and confirmation/Reward posts.

TIME: Either increases our reaction time to better process information, or actively slows down an opponent temporarily. More leaning towards the first interpretation, but useful either way.

LOCATION: Mini-Teleport? So soon? When you want to be 5 feet away right NOW.

SUMMON: Heartstaff and Blood Shield, both in Hammerspace and can be summoned in a second. We will never be unarmed for our trained fighting style.

TRACKING: Always keeping our objective in sight? Or possible a version of the battle precog that Mathew had mentioned.

Going to need some time to digest this update.
@Silverking

Congrats. First time someone has actually met one of my secret challenges.

For getting all 4 words correct Lilly will receive a bonus to her Grasp or Tier (between +1 to +3) on whichever option ends up being selected.

New Title: "It's a Girls World - And it's always more Spirit Nonsense"

Also. Someone over on the Spacebattles mirror of this thread just met a Secret Challenge. Feel free to pop over there and see what they uncovered.

[X] [S:FES] [Rapid Iterator | 2873-2A, Efficient Tension Sustainment]
[X] [SoT] Core Anchor

Choosing the 'My Resolution, Thy Bedrock' ethos in the hopes that it can help us fix dad. 'Rapid Iterator' sounds like something that might be attached to a dungeon to make it spawn monsters.
The Reward was just Slyvena stating that Foundational Ethos are Dungeons.

Anyway, I've got a plan materializing, but while I work on that, here's some thoughts on the Foundational Ethae.

OVERALL FEELING:
Foundational Ethae are Moderator Intervention, full stop. Just reading all of these and the overall thrust seems to be a combination of "Take measures to ensure that the setting doesn't catastrophically collapse" paired with "Take measures to neutralize situations of high stability". It seems that conflict of some kind is necessary to handle... Whatever the fuck it is that gods and spirits do, and they neither want everyone to die nor do they want everyone to get into a comfortable rut and just stagnate there forever.

Foundational Ethae exist as Correctors, the fantasy setting equivalent of a mod dropping in and giving someone supernal abilities to ensure that things get back on trac... Except as we're learning here--the gods are currently under siege and something seems to be stirring up all of the seeded plotlines at the same time.

So, with that in mind.

Let us begin.

[Rapid Iterator
| 2873-2A, Efficient Tension Sustainment] (Foundational): (Essence)
The name suggests that it's a "Throw shit at the wall until you find something that sticks". When you include the hypothesis of "A Foundation Ethos exists to balance an unbalanced equation", and the Source being Essence--when we read the description, what comes to mind for me is "Someone who shows up, generates a shitton of monsters from local wildlife, grants them supernatural powers, and rapidly adapts to..."

To...

changing circumstances, evolving and developing new countermeasures to counter local integrator forces.

Son of a Bitch! We're fighting a Rapid Iterator gone out of control, aren't we? That's why the Captain wanted us to move in here! And why if it was Broken we'd all be dead! If it was Broken it could send its best forces out of the fucking dungeon it's turning the forest into

So, yeah, Rapid Iterator is "Basically the boss we're fighting right now"

[Towering Edifice to Heaven | 7958-A Series, Regional Stressor Event] (Foundational): (Deific)
Towering Edifice to Heaven, Regional Stressor Event, Deific source... So it taps directly into the spirits for patronage. Reading the description, it suggests manifesting material ex-nihilo, and the purpose is that when 'Unscheduled' (And isn't that an example of Blue and Orange) Genocide is undergoing, that this is a correction that exists to get everyone to back off and stop trying to murder each other... Presumably by producing a new threat that requires at least tacit cooperation with one another. It also further limits how much strength can be 'Ranging'. Taking it all together? It looks like this is "Dungeon Core" mode where a Dungeon shows up and starts spitting out monsters, a dungeon that scales up to counter whenever people seem to have it under control. Notably, it establishes that this iteration cannot have the monsters be tamed. I suspect this will turn the Forest into a dungeon with Lilly as the master--and gives us a functionally inassailable base of operations to work with, since a Foundational Ethos usually isn't paired with an ambulatory human as its heart.

[Reinterpretation Seed | 566-B, Manoth Placement Approval Only ] (Foundational): (Oath) {Inverted}
Notably, Manoth is also the mastermind behind {Inverted Ethae}, something that's still in beta mode (Though I wonder if the fact we've had two show up in two consecutive activations got his attention? Either that or he and Evie are just friends and/or colleagues to begin with, which is why she had the authority to flag Lilly as a beta tester in the first place). Knowing what we know about {Inverted} Ethae, Manoth is... Uh, fascinated with the idea of trauma, and seems to be producing content that takes trauma and turns it into power. With that aside, we look at the description and we get... Not really a whole lot! Just that the Powers That Be would very much prefer that this only be used in areas of 'Low Biodiversity', and that 'If we can achieve our goals in a more subtle fashion please do it that way'. Whatever this is, it is very fucking vulgar and the equivalent of taking a gigantic hammer to the status quo.

--Temporary delay to scream at the fact I was putting this all together and missed the secret challenge because I was too busy trying to be comprehensive!
Holy Fucking Shit you don't need to scream long because-

-that's the other secret challenge phrase.
Yes. You are.
It's why you even have it as a selection option. Do bare in mind your Foundational Ethos will be modified to function with a human, so don't expect Dominion over an entire geographic region without putting in work.
+5 to Grasp on Foundational Ethos

There were the only two secret challenges this chapter guys. Freaking congrats.

With how it's described it's almost assuredly a Flow based Ethos I think. To me at least, Marigold sounds like someone that was formed around an Inverted Ethos, as that'd be consistent with her form of morality. I'm gonna speculate that she got her Ethos from having her virginity stolen in a rape, which manifested in an Inverted Flow Ethos and her going around punishing would-be reoffenders. It also ties into the blood powers. If I were to take a crack at formulating her Ethos it would probably be something like this: (CW: implied sexual violence)
[Blood-tainted Innocence]: (Flow) (Inverted)
They say it only hurts a little the first time. This was not true for you when you were held down and struggled, crying out for someone to rescue you. But you survived and vowed that yours would not be the last blood that was spilled. Many of those around you harbor the same dark impulses that violated you that night, now it's your turn to reciprocate. Inflame their passions, mingle your blood with theirs and seize control over them. Fuel the fires of your revenge with their life force. It will hurt a lot, but you at least will be quicker than he was.
Secret Challenge Met
Marigold received her Ethos on her thirteen birthday, which was also her wedding night. (Almost 4 years ago). By law, it was all above board; she disagrees.
You get her Ethos description and names of her powers/subpowers.

Hmmm...

There is a bit of land below Parish and to the right of Alenria that is apparently unclaimed. I wonder why...

I guess the relations between those two "kingdoms" aren't that good. Or there is a problem with piratery, but then we, as Narisennial, would also be partially affected by that.

Also, what is probably our capital is surprisingly close to a border.

EDIT: actually, also Loislv has a capital near a border, and Parish has its near to what is probably one of the bad places no one wants to claim.

@IceCold

Thank you for compiling those. I believe there were two other instances that you may want to add on (one was technically unmet, but could be used as reference.)

Edifier, Post 1440, Page 58
I believe I get {Recalled Genesis} now.
First overhearing what people say in the distance. The sound travels out, it disperses. But the origin point from where they speak is clear. So through essence, it links to the origin.
For regenerating, recalled genesis can tap either into the origin where the damage is gotten or into the beginnings when the body is remade anew or made from scratch. Like a blueprint to reference.
For the heart staff, it's calling back to its creation, its genesis. When pops designed it, it had many possible ways it could have been made. So calling back, it taps into the beginning point where its shape could have gone into separate directions. Thus an easier way to reform it and find potential shapes for it, through this skill, tapping into dads intentions for making the staff. Stealing blueprints from the past or from the memories held by essence.

Slyvena Response, Post 1448, Page 60
Noice. Lilly now has a bonus to her chances to figure that out and start unlocking its further potential.

Silverking (Secret Challenge met, but too late for rewards), Post 1,349, Page 54
...I just realized, we DID encounter some Flow power during the boss fight that we had no "language" for what it was or how to deal with it.

We had to stack two detection skills AND have the homefield advantage to bypass it. Who knows what other Flow skills we may end up subjected to without us knowing? This is actually quite concerning; Lilly's got enough of an information drought to fill without Perception Filters, we may want to prioritize this (at least, if the Ethos choices are agreeable).

Slyvena Response, Post 1,369, Page 55
Nice job. But too late to meet the secret challenge conditions.
The biggest hint was how even once Lilly realised they were there, there was still a pressure in her mind to see things the wrong way. That was a mild Flow effect designed specifically to spoof your Essence Sight.

Also, what is probably our capital is surprisingly close to a border.

EDIT: actually, also Loislv has a capital near a border, and Parish has its near to what is probably one of the bad places no one wants to claim.
None of this is all that unusual. It's fairly common for a national capital to end up relatively close to a border through one of the following processes:

1) Asymmetric annexation (the US started on the Eastern Seaboard and expanded west; now the national capital is like 100 miles from one edge of the territory of a nation 3000 miles across).

2) Strategic terrain (Czarist Russia built a new capital at St. Petersburg, very close to the edge of their territory then as now, because it was well positioned and a good site that got them away from the old, more centrally located capital).

3) Regional dominance (China's capital is in Beijing for a variety of reasons, chief among them that the northern part of the country has historically been able to dominate the southern part most of the time.

absolutely nothing suspicious about 'the still eye' at all, nope :V

definitely won't be heading there later :V

That map actually puts Marigold quite some ways away from us, so she might not arrive in time for our little confrontation. She basically has to cross the entirety of Narisell, and I don't remember exactly how close she was to the border, just that she was relatively close.

Last edited:
she was directly at the borders iirc, the patrol she ran into was there to recharge border scrying stones, so she should be crossing the border soon.

Narisell: We Serve
Scobar: At any Cost
Parisi: It is our Chain
Alenria: Through Bleak and Firm
Shara: Water, Dirt
Quarn: We Regret
Kailshii: Strong Every Season
Lamric: Twice Given
Loilsv: Humanity First
Desert-Kinn: Apay Svii Ve'loo
Wow what nice and friendly mottos for the countries nearby and not concerning at all. The only one that I feel good about is Strong Every Season cause that seems actually normal and uplifting compared to things like 'We Serve' or 'We Regret'. Though I have to acknowledge I am completely confused by Shara and Desert-Kinn's 'Water, Dirt' and 'Apay Svii Ve'loo' mean since they just so seem random especially Shara's since it doesn't even have the excuse of another language

Looking at the map there's also plenty of other 'nice' names too. Like The Still Eye which seems to be a black obelisk in the the center piece of land of a circular lake and its surrounding region doesn't appear to be part of any country on our map which obviously means it's perfectly safe and not at all scary.

There's also Dead Rest which seems to be a the northern region of Desert-Kinn's country where what seems two major cities are. Makes me wonder if Desert-Kinn are zombies ala Warhammer Fantasy's Tomb Kings since their 'cities' seem like faded ruins. There's also ominous giant pink crystals that are apparently either big or important enough to be put on a map.

The Region at the bottom of the Map called the Zero Line that looks like cracked and blood splotched earth is also not concerning at all! Especially since it's border doesn't seem to be political since it still shows up on the geographic map! Please don't be an invasion of another reality or something please.

I really hope The Silent Sea that's apparently close enough for us to visit in half a night isn't related to the Still Eye cause I don't want to deal with Cthulhu.

Giant red crystal Lattidyst near Quarn and Kailshi but claimed by neither is also not scary or frightful. It's obviously a Final Fantasy job changing crystal and therefore full of Light and Goodness right? It's not like Quarn's motto is 'We Regret' or anything right implying they did something really bad and/or dumb right?

Pallids in Alenria also looks nice with the black splotches on the Earth where everything seems dead and what seems like an ominous black door/mine from where the black splotches started from.

Wonder what's up with giant green pool Empfreen that none of the nearby countries want to claim it and its surrounding area. Cause I vaguely feel it's less dangerous than other things like the Still Eye or the varied unclaimed mountain ranges that are similarly unclaimed. Do Shara and Parise not want to share a border or is my vague feeling completely off?

Or maybe they aren't human, but Desert-Kinn. Like a different species or something that, at max, was only in the past related to humans.
