It's a Girl's World -- And Lilly wants Adventure

[ ] [BB] The swinging blade crept forward glacially. {..im..}

TIME: Either increases our reaction time to better process information, or actively slows down an opponent temporarily. More leaning towards the first interpretation, but useful either way.

[ ] [BB] She closed the gap in the blink of an eye. {Locat……}

LOCATION: Mini-Teleport? So soon? When you want to be 5 feet away right NOW.

[ ] [BB] Never defenceless, a shield always at the ready. {….mmon}

SUMMON: Heartstaff and Blood Shield, both in Hammerspace and can be summoned in a second. We will never be unarmed for our trained fighting style.

[ ] [BB] Arrows flew and swords clashed, she found the calm in the storm. {….ackin..}

TRACKING: Always keeping our objective in sight? Or possible a version of the battle precog that Mathew had mentioned.

Going to need some time to digest this update.

@Silverking

Congrats. First time someone has actually met one of my secret challenges.

For getting all 4 words correct Lilly will receive a bonus to her Grasp or Tier (between +1 to +3) on whichever option ends up being selected.

Ah but you're forgetting the third option.

That SF voids my formatting whenever I copy over from a Word Doc and I missed re-purpling these. It's Evie talking. Same as when she commented on your Ethos picks last time.

Since you helped me spot that, I'll tell you that everything missing letter was replaced with '..'
I'm going to assume that everything was meant to be just a plain every meaning 'every missing letter was replaced with ..'

{..im..}{Locat……} {….mmon}{….ackin..}
_im_ hime? Lime? Time!

Locat___ (I think that's six periods/dots when I mouse over it it skips in blocks of 3) Location!

__mmon. Summon? Summon feels right

__ackin_. Tracking?

Time Location Summon Tracking? Feels like it flows together to something but not sure about the Summon cause Evie should be messing with Lilly's body but.. Oh this is commenting on our new Brave Blood stuff

[ ] [BB] The swinging blade crept forward glacially. {Time}
[ ] [BB] She closed the gap in the blink of an eye. {Location}
[ ] [BB] Never defenceless, a shield always at the ready. {Summon}
[ ] [BB] Arrows flew and swords clashed, she found the calm in the storm. {Tracking}
How control over our perception of time? Bullet time super speed?

Be able to flash step from location to location? Teleportation?

Summon a shield. No question mark I'm actually confident in that one

Being able to track what's going in a battle without getting overwhelmed.

Pretty decent lineup there besides maybe Shield not sure how useful that is cause if it gives us a Heartstaff shield version that grows along with us that could be cool.

For our current situation I'm inclined to Time or Tracking cause I really doubt we have Prithe to spare for Location and if things turn into an ambush or whatever being able to see/track the course of the battle would be nice.

Edit: dammit Ninja'd curse you SilverKing! :\/

It's all good NotteBoy97, we get the bonus either way. Now, onto the choices.

[X] [CI] Okay. I'll come.
- [X] [CI] [Yes] I trust you not to push me too far sir. (Agreement)

This is what we paid our secret for; protection, resources and time. To welch at the endgame would undermine our sacrifice. We're not alone, we are not expendable, let's do this!

[X] [APC] Yes, you will likely need their help to get there in the increasingly treacherous forest.
- [X] [APC] [Reveal] Try to convince Captain Martin to detour toward the Prime Tree.

…Dang it, I wish that we had a better time frame of what the Prime Tree meant by "soon". Unfortunately, it seems that the corruption is the main function of the time limit. Let's swing by and hope nobody tries to blackmail us by threatening the source of our boundless Essence. (Actually, if Martin's that invested in us, he may put a security detail around the blasted thing)

[FM] Give everyone a soft hug. Show Yolun the Heartstaff; he's part of the Dream now, too.

While the "time" is right, we can ask our Mom the truth about our name later. We give our family some reassurance, and we show Yolun that his work is not in vain, and perhaps we both may gain something from his insights.

[X] [DwtFLU] She was all the forest and all the forest was her.
[X] [DwtFLU] She saw it in her dream, it became a little more real.

Limited forest omniscience, or conjure more from hammerspace. I like both these options.

[X] [BB] Arrows flew and swords clashed, she found the calm in the storm. {….ackin..}

As Mathew said, knowledge can be more effective than mere strength. Not losing sight of our objective (or even better, FINDING what the true objective should be) can be very helpful for us.

[X] [DwtFAME] I embrace the path of restoration and heritage.

A girl ran into the forest one night, with a father and mother who didn't understand her. The girl returned a moon later, bearing many gifts. A shared song cleared the air with her mother, and her father's craft helped her advance in ways she never anticipated. This path may not bring us the most power, but I think it most resonates with Lilly right now. We had the option of being the [Reverant Advocate], a voice for the lost. If we can help pave the way for others to heal their bonds as we have, that's a path I want us to follow.

[X] [BtCabE] Freely make use of what you have regained. You have a good sense of how far you can safely push things.

I don't want to risk someone losing a hand because we're too stingy. Besides, we're still in "opening interview" mode, we don't want to be viewed as merely support if we can help it.

[X] [NIV] The end of the First Era.

A little world-building could be useful. Particularly if it gives us hints of what's happening now.

[X] [DD] She'd likely never have another shot at this. He who sows the most seeds, reaps the greatest harvest. (Evie's {{REDACTED}} will not replace your fifth Ethos choice (available Ethea will be rerolled))

…I'm feeling greedy. Maybe do this in the barn with fewer witnesses?

"I am good enough?" "Do you forgive him?" "Will you accept me?"

The Girl enthusiastically and unconditionally accepts. You both yearn to share this not only with a facsimile, but the man who made it.
So I think this is important to keep in mind for the family write-in cause Lilly answering her Father's heart wrenching questions sounds like a good use of our time though maybe focusing on one member of the family overly much.

Your time together, Girl and Tree, grows short. This was not the normal means for you two to meet and the Dream strains at the unexpected convergence. To be complete, this connection must also be enacted in the waking world.

As the Girl drifts back to herself, you bid her fair tidings once more, and impart an important truth.

"Come for me soon Progenitor, the foulness nips at my roots already. The hour is late, we must unite within the waking world before we are ripped from the soil."
So things I suspect about us going back to good ole Primey and maybe useful for arguments towards the captain.

Going to it will "Complete" our connection which at the very least probably powers us up even more. Hopefully without a 2 month dirt nap this time and in this sort of situation.

The 'Foulness' is nipping at our tree's roots which is probably bad in all kinds of ways both for Lilly and the people she's connected with via the Dream. Cause the power behind these wolves already bit through one connection of ours whose to say it won't try and rip out the heart of it? Or maybe corrupt it?

This might be important info for convincing Captain about detouring to our tree cause at least there's probably some sort of enemy action going on.

I should really just do all this in one post rather than have to wait for someone else to do so or risk double posting but whatever.

Might as well throw some other thoughts in this post while I wait.

First thing first (well technically second thing but I really want some sleep before I tackle Evie's musings).

What I suspect is our little mind broken and controlling Noble lady seems to be up North of us trying to make people explode. How close North is she? No idea but given how none of the Guard who went North did their best impression of Bomberman she might be somewhere else than our current area. Assuming that the Forest isn't North of us and that there's probably no people there during this situation.

Which is good, for us... probably. At the very least I really hope to have Song back up before we run into her since Song should hopefully help counter her Obeying Words given its initial description.

e eyes of each adult that had dismissed you from their attention (save for Mathew's significant glances) drift back to you along with an uneasy silence. You feel your confidence practically wilt under their focus. It's almost comical the way people in authority just looking your way can suddenly make you feel more powerless than actual frothing monsters.

"That is- I mean- I can make people stronger- or not quite, but…" you stutter.

You're losing them. The idea in your head is quite clear. Reveal how you can help those who rely on Pithe to fight at 100% strength for an extended period, barter that service in return for altering their plans to get help to your family sooner. But the distance between your head and mouth has never seemed further.
Oof poor Lilly public speaking to Authority is the worse. Hopefully she can learn to get better at this even if it's off the back of Singing again.

Also I don't recall any arguments being made by the players about trying to barter our hidden powers in exchange for the Guard helping our family so nice on you Lilly for thinking of that. Probably should think about this ourselves for this vote too.

"Easily the fifth tier, Captain. Perhaps as far as the seventh," he answers, then after an uneasy delay he adds with a hint of regret, "awakened less than three months."

Your Natural Energy sight lets you see things you're sure you'd miss ten times out of ten without it, like the way the Captain stills his movements and catches his breath for the shortest instant before returning to normal.

"Ah," he says almost too quiet to hear as he steps close to Mathew to continue their conversation at a whisper.
Hmm concerning cause both Captain and Mathew seem to react (or not!react) to our rapid growth in a way that almost makes it feel like they're sorry for us. Especially not liking how the captain immediately tries to cut us out of the conversation afterwards. Makes me feel they have an idea of what makes us special and its not good for us even if they're not exactly correct. Also nice to see our Energy sight helping us in a social situation

Many times since you awoke in that clearing your powers have baffled you as to what degree they are under your control or merely directed by suggestion. So you are both surprised and not surprised at all when some alternate expression connected to {Wood Memory} in an ill-defined tangential way carries their whispers to your ear. A mystery to solve later, for now you look away to not attract suspicion as their words flow to you.
For those who didn't read the comments this is from the blank section of our Whisper of Life skill. Still not sure what it is but my guess it has something to do with our connection to Mathew and the Dream, some Daydreamer type thing? Whatever the reason nice to have another aspect of our power known to us.

Nevermind just realized I could check the textbox for the blank power. It's Recalled Genesis. Probably works via 'We were all connected from the start and we're still connected now' or some such

Will comment more on the update and vote tomorrow after I get some sleep.

And so the little psychopath is able to command people to do things in defiance of physics. Not to mention that going deaf doesn't necessarily work anymore if she's able to speak directly into people's heads. Lovely.

{{Captain Martin}}: "The Tithe then?"
{{Mathew}}: "No doubt."

Oh, I think I see. The Lore Warden trying to snatch us up isn't just him being greedy; it's a government mandate that exceptional citizens are to be taken from their homes and assigned to more "effiecient" roles than they'd have by staying in their hometown. The "Noosemen" seem to be a different faction that can claim us, and they'll allow Lilly to stay in town for 9 months instead of the 7 months for her birthday. (Also, we love our Mom, but things she learns may not necessarily remain secret).

Of course. That was before he trod over any of all your objections to his magic. You… you wouldn't have said no if he asked you first, but something about the way Marius just did it leaves you feeling… you just didn't like it.

And this is why it's important to get consent for your magic, Lilly. Never thought the sociopathic Ladder would have the moral high ground on this.

{{Captain Martin}}: "-rly arranged. Lilly trusts you yes? Can she be kept calm?"
{{Mathew}}: "I don't know sir. She's a firm heart, but her wits seem quite frayed."
{{Captain Martin}}: "Yes or no Sergeant? The girl taking flight at a critical moment could collapse the formation. Can it be done?"
{{Mathew}}: "She preens at encouragement from authority, sir. Have officers vocally encourage her and she'll do whatever she can to prove them right. In a melee, she'll probably mimic the bravest man beside her."
{{Captain Martin}}: "You mean that as a compliment yes? She'll match the best of us?"
{{Mathew}}: "I… Yes. Now that I think about it, she won't be the first to break."
{{Captain Martin}}: "Good. Because she is listening."

And this is what is known as "being handled". I don't think Mathew's actively working against us, but it's never a good feeling to hear how one may best be manipulated.

You needn't have worried. 186, that's how many Watchmen there are. 123 draw from Pithe, 2 from Essence, the rest you can't identify.

Now THAT'S an opening interview! [Sympathetic Linkage] is now at max level, and the instinctual communication seems more valuable than the infinite battery! Now, all we need to do is set up a similar trick with herding sheep or horses and we'll have [Wild Affinity] maxed easy.

What the fuck, didn't you say (Inverted) Ethae are hard to get?

Yeah, I think our "Interview" has been going splendidly so far, and the Captain's fully willing to block the shitcanning.

Of course, there's someone else now who has a claim that even they're unwilling to try and do anything with that has a very ominous name. That doesn't mean they're necessarily executioners, just that they tend to kill people--could very well be "Someone like you is exactly who we go out of our way to recruit, and god have mercy on anyone who gets in our way."

Indeed, very rare. All other things being equal, an Inverted Ethos' DC would be twice that of a normal one and they all have at least one condition that must often be satisfied at the time the selection is offered.
Most of the time all Inverted Ethea are sitting well above 100 and are thus impossible to roll even if you are meeting other conditions.

Given the circumstances. [My Beautiful Pain]'s 'Special Requirement' is to operate in spite of horrifying injuries and still come out intact enough to get a large DC modifier on the Ethos pull, isn't it?

You need to have multiple facets of your hopes and dreams sullied in disappointing ways, even better if you feel stupid and naive when it happens. There have been a few quite a few of those recently but this chapter you've had enough to meet the 'can roll' condition.

Overhearing the man you've been crushing on lay out his opinion on how to manipulate you, that's gotta sting and really doesn't fit the "I'm proving myself and gaining his respect" narrative you were telling yourself.
Marius' healing was the big one. Magic and spells have always been a source of fullness and joyful wonder to Lilly, feeling slightly violated by a mage who is one of the 'good guys' did the trick. The fact he mildly gaslit Lilly too making her wonder if her reservations were even okay or if she was just being dumb also really helped.

Enduring physical pain is helpful for lowering the DC, but disappointments and loss of innocence are best.

Huh.

So, from what I can see, the choice is between a reroll at a bonus that happens right now with the obvious catch of "People who might not have your best interests bin mind can see"? Or nothing for now but this spread when the next opportunity comes?

So, from what I can see, the choice is between a reroll at a bonus that happens right now? Or nothing for now but this spread when the next opportunity comes?

Nope. You either get a reroll with new options, or nothing at all. The crossed out list is simply a 'could have been' glimpse.

It's essentially offering you an extra Ethos free of charge, at the cost of making you temporarily more noticeable in an as yet unspecified way.

So on one hand, more power but more likely to NEED the power sooner...unless theres an Ethea unlocking right now thats particularly rare I believe we want the attention less than we want the power.

Noosemen bring to my mind Odin's hanging of himself from Yggdrasil. Perhaps a group composed of people that, through some means involving their Ethos, were able to gain growth/knowledge beyond the mortal ken. Of course they could just be Tithe collectors.

I'm much more reckless at the start of quests.

Once you get going, breaking things seems like pissing on everyone's effort and investment.

In terms of survivability, one of Lilly's main weaknesses was the need for a body and organs, or any specialised structures separate from her soul at all really. Her emotions and altruistic cognition also represented unreasonable risks. Both had to change immediately. The pseudo-crystalline analogue often used as the focal core for Foundational Ethea would simultaneously be a far more secure housing vessel and help me erase her ridiculous race loyalty.

Were this any other era I'd be insane for trying something so unsubtle. But after the Maw's flyby, I think I could actually get away with simply flagging her as the next scheduled placement site. If the chaos I left behind was any indication, no one is still manning that proverbial watchtower. Still, if I didn't want her soul to immediately decohere, prep work was necessary for the coming transmu-}

... Well, shite. Sounds to me like the being we invited into Lilly's head doesn't necessarily have her best interests at heart (that last statement I've underlined seems especially damning.) I'm surprised noone else has commented on this yet. We're gonna have to be careful about voting for options in the pink highlights.

The Captain sounds suspicious as hell ("walk into this dark forest with me, and I'll shower you with fortune and wealth" / *steps back* "suuure, Captain"), but I trust from everything else that it's unintentional.

I think we're, for better or worse, already all-in on these people, and what better way to ensure their loyalty than with bonds of battle, while showing our indispensibility!

[X] [DwtFLU] She was all the forest and all the forest was her.

Intelligence/reconnaissance; the dearth of which had gotten us into this situation to begin with.

I'm a bit worried that it only works in forests, though. Meh.

...

[X] [BB] The swinging blade crept forward glacially. {..im..}

Bullet time is always good. Lilly's tactical thinking is already strong so it's less essential than it would be for other people.

Would also be a benefit for planning. Instead of hesitating in her speech, Lilly can bullet-time plan the speech.

[X] [BtCabE] Remain as conservative as humanly possible, only draw upon Pithe to save another's life.

Not risking this; also keeping a powerful secret back from them hopefully.

[X] [DD] She'd likely never have another shot at this. He who sows the most seeds, reaps the greatest harvest. (Evie's {{REDACTED}} will not replace your fifth Ethos choice (available Ethea will be rerolled))

More bonds in battle from the future attacks (failure mode is if the guardsmen suspect that we're the cause, but considering how well organized they are about this, I doubt it), more chances to show our indispensability.

Also, this battle is a good time for a new ethos (I could be wrong on this; it's not as good as back when we were moments from death). More coordination, more indispensability, better sensors?

[X] [FM] To get help quickly, I was forced to show the guards most of what I can do. We need to talk about the wider world at some point. I can't afford to be kept in the dark any longer.

See below.

[X] [NIV] Meanwhile across the Ocean.

Because why not? C'mon, people!

...

[X] [DwtFAME] I embrace the connection between all things.

Increase coordination even further? Hive-mind? Either way, make us even more indispensable.

[X] [DwtFAME] I embrace that which hides beneath the waking world.

Stranger powers sound good for survival. Tunneling powers, on the other hand, would be more meh. (Well, unless literally no one else can affect the Earth below, in which case we can make like a mole.)

[X] [DwtFAME] The Dream should not be pruned, I grant it unrestrained growth.

If it really is unrestrained growth, we can farm effortlessly and set up natural barriers against invasion; a strategic boon. Would also better convince the Captain to side with us.

Keep in mind that this is a being who deals commonly with multiple races. From that point of view, "race loyalty" can be considered, well, racist? Sure, Lilly doesn't have the life experiences to be loyal to any larger entity, but Evie might not have seen it that way, or might not have simply been able to just expand the concept of "humanity" will-nilly.

I'd be far more worried if Evie was adding loyalty to something else.

Whatever the case, the Evie that did this is no longer a coherent being. This new Evie will be raised with our values, whatever they may be. And, I suspect those will be shaped far more by our near-term experiences. Naive optimism and impractical altruism will fall down the wayside soon enough; the most old-Evie did was to preempt that process before we got in over our heads.

In short: old-Evie did some questionable things, but not so consequential in the long-term, and she's beyond punishment now. New-Evie will be up to us to raise.

Aww yes, we're back! As is increasingly made clear, Lilly has a lot of things to juggle, from "immediate concern" to "long term survival".
Even turning 13 feels like it'll be an accomplishment at the rate things have been happening.

Going for the tree, even under scrutiny, seems best.

I can be convinced on the other options for the Level Up and Milestone Expansion, but I'm starting to feel concerned about Lilly being attacked or influenced through her dreams, with how significant they've been from the start. Worst case, she's been puppeteered from the beginning (and not by voters haha). Best case, it's a non-issue and Lilly has something out-of-context to use to her advantage.

I'm still thinking over a possible write-in for the Milestone Expansion, but I'd need to look at the Character Sheet for that, and I might be late for work as is haha.

Given that Ethos can be overstressed as we've seen, consistently identifying objectives will help on a tactical basis, maybe even for strategy. On a similar note, Lilly should look into getting followers. Not as far as a cult, but they'd be more trustworthy than almost all characters we've seen outside of Lilly's family. The running theme seems to be "temporarily aligned out of mutual self-interest".

I'm torn on Burning the Candle-I want to trust Lilly to get further experience operating with harder limits on her abilities, but I also don't want her to potentially lose future experimentation time with the untested level ups. Factoring in further impressing the Captain versus safety in discretion, I'd feel better staying consistent on this.

On the other hand, I'm very happy with learning more about the world as a whole, but whatever's happening right now and maybe coming is equally intriguing. If I recall correctly, there have previously only been two options so far relating to water, both untaken, but they're there. So I'd wager something big is going on.

Finally, given that deific fragment consummation is a thing, better to not attract more attention. Evie's intro is pretty clear that there's at least one thing bigger and hungrier out there. Always a bigger fish and all.

This is less than half that I want to get into and speculate and discuss, but it's long as is. Can't wait for more!

There's one other thing we need to demand, at some point: an explanation. We made major decisions without knowing their larger impact. The fact that the Captain and Mathew are talking about things we have no idea about does not bode well for us.

We can get basic info about Tithes, Noosemen, tiers from our father ("and stop thinking it can be left for another day; you saw what we were forced to decide blindly with no warning") then update on present-day concerns with the Captain--might as well go straight to the top, since he's going to be the main mover of the "What to do with Lilly" policy in the mid-future.

As such, I've added the following family matter to my above vote:

[ ] [FM] To get help quickly, I was forced to show the guards most of what I can do. We need to talk about the wider world at some point. I can't afford to be kept in the dark any longer.
