FATHER QUEST - A Cartoon Network: Villains Victorious CK2-Style Quest Cross Over

I know I'm going all fire and brimstone, but I am still just talking about a fictional story.

I recognize that what is right or wrong in narratives comes down to the ideology of the author. I've gotten this hyped up before and been catastrophically wrong. I can only guess that my interpretation is the one meant to be taken, but the nature of the medium is that it's applicable.

I really hope nobody takes my words as an aspersion. I'm emotionally invested, but not that emotionally invested.

I picked DOUBLE DOWN for many reasons, like I think honesty being a requisite before change because how can you solve a problem before you know its there? Because I think it would be very very fun for Father to go wild because it's his element, alongside fire. Because I think it's the most in-character, Father does hate children, he has a hair-trigger temper, Father is constantly smouldering right now at best, and Father has just been shit-talked by villains across the Earth. Father should be exploding right now, it's roleplaying.

But also because I don't think these other mealy-mouthed options will get us great results, disowning it will ring false, denying it to everyone physically hurts him to even think about it and will probably ring false regardless, and I usually just don't trust write-in options since they usually try to have their cake and eat it too.

Double down! You know you want to see Father get angry! It's one of the best parts about him!

I get it, just worried for the health of my fellow human beings. I have both the love of human psychology and genuine personal experience with seeing people break because they tried to 'suck it up', repress, and ignore the root cause of their issues and it looked like you were genuinely espousing those beliefs there for a bit so I was pretty concerned.

I'm voting rationalise for the logic of not wanting to screw with just about any diplomatic attemppt in the future:

[X] "Rationalize" It (Briefly)

The idea that you have to admit your problem to grow past it is fortune cookie nonsense. There is one, and only one, step to solving a problem, solving the problem. If you're doing something evil, stop. If you're doing something inefficent, change your strategy.
Making your problems other peoples problems is the mark of a child who has no self control or self awareness. It's the mark of a baby who can't accept responsibility for their own actions, or recognize that wrongdoing occurred. It's the mark of a snivelling, moral, coward.

There is no right process. There is no ideal sequence of events. You do, or you don't. You try, or you don't. You improve, or you don't.

You suck it up. You repress. You do what you have to do. That is what being an adult means. That is what being a grown up means. To ignore your own feelings, for the sake of others. To suffer, because to make others suffers is a pain far worse.

It's no great sacrifice. It's just basic decency.

Shit, that's really messed up thinking. And the mere existence of therapy points to it being untrue.

Talking things out, sorting out your own feelings, getting to the root cause of things, working from there. That's the only way to change, to identify why you feel the way you do, to work towards being better.

Repression, shoving things deep down, does not make you not have that as part of you. It does not alter who you are beyond added stress. It makes you into a ticking time bomb, that will either continue to build up until the day you die, or you have enough shit dumped on you that you snap, explode, one way or another.

It's not healthy. Not in the least. It's a mindset that hurts many people in this world.

He already knows why he hates children

Does he though? Does Father really, truly admit it to himself? Many people have motivations, petty motivations they refuse to admit to themselves, making themselves come off as grander in their own mind. People want to be in the right, to be the main character of their own story. They don't like admitting they were messed up by things before. They don't like admitting that what they do is deeply rooted in hurt.

I think that he wouldn't speak this aloud, wouldn't take the time to really consider it himself, if he didn't blurt it out in a rage.

[X] I DON'T KNOW

I think this perfectly encapsulates exactly how Father's been written in this quest. At his core, the reason why he's done everything is to earn his own abusive parents approval and he never got it. And as traumatizing as it was the most liberating thing he's ever done is kill his own father. His abuser. An adult.

And after doing this Father has been aimless. He has moments where he doesn't react even how he thinks he should. Stickbeard calls him out on it when he fights the Gems, when the Delightful Children/Sector Z abandon him he doesn't get angry about it, despite wanting to get angry he just accepts it, when he learns that 362 lost people he couldn't bring himself to mock her, and when she calls him out on being a child deep down he's so shocked he can't even form a response.

This is the type of man Father is. A lost one.

Problem is... Father does hate kids. Explicitly so, there was literally a clip of him loudly proclaiming it while baking them into a cake.

Granted, it's hate born from envy and bitterness, but if he lies about it now, he'll just get called out on it. There's a reason why "rationalize" is in quotations.

As for complaints of its length, I've run it by Discord and made some much needed edits and fine tuning. For what it's worth, it's even (tentatively) C-Moon approved!

[X] "Rationalize" It (Briefly)

Why do you hate kids? The real question is, why should you not? Because they're young? Because they're cute? Because they're the "future"?

You've known firsthand since you were a child: the simple fact is, kids embody everything that is wrong with people. Left alone, they're selfish liars and manipulators, not just to their own parents, but even to each other! The KND turned kids into child soldiers and justified it as "freeing kids from adult tyranny". And what exactly did they do with that "freedom"? They either fool around and do nothing of value for the world, or commit atrocities adults could scarcely imagine!

And you hate that because they have just as much potential to benefit society as adults! See, even those who claim they don't hate kids don't really respect them, from what you see. You know there's kids out there right now working for, or even running powerful corporations!

Now, are all kids the worst? No, even you can admit that. They start to learn responsibility and self-control as teenagers, and even as kids some of them can learn to be polite and considerate of others. You know your good man Hank has raised his boy right, and you personally know some kids that are just... Delightful.

Point being, at the end of the day, you're ensuring kids grow up with good values! American values! If people think that's a bad thing, then even if they don't hate kids, you guess they don't really care about kids at all anyway!
Responsibility and the potential to benefit society doesn't really seem like something Father really honestly cares about. I'd be surprised if he didn't resent the kids running corporations. The brief rationalization vote's what it says it is, desperate rationalization with a slip of honesty. I prefer the honest flailing bile of doubling down. Like 362 says, Father's never learned to grow up- and so far has no reason to try.

I'll just say this, is regards to Doubling Down:

From my understanding, the reason why most (or at least a notable percentage of) people seem to be voting for it because they view it as the "honest" option; whether it's a matter of staying IC or a possible avenue of turning Father away from his ageist mindset, people seem to regardless interpret it as Father being utterly truthful regarding his beliefs.

Is he though?

Father went into this interview just after being called out by someone who was effectively his former arch-nemesis. From there, he was was belittled and criticized but not just several rivals/peers across North America, but taunted by the host himself in the hopes of inciting a reaction. Finally, when he's been riled up, he gets a call from the CEO of his company directly questioning him on the central tenet of his ideology. Regardless of how you interpret Father's character, he is in a high-stress situation where he has little time to react or form a rebuttal.

Father has lashed out impulsively from his anger before, yes. But note that this is not standing his ground. This is doubling down; this is channeling every bit of rage to commit to his own rhetoric out of spite. And it's not like he doesn't have reason to think he might as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb.

If you really want to see Father blow up, you're free to interpret it however; but point being, I don't think it should be assumed that it's honest, nor that it will lead to Father acknowledging the source of his hate. Especially when all the other options are dishonest in their own ways.

[X] That, is quite ENOUGH!

It
seems Mr. Hill hasn't quite read through Adult Co. Mission Statement.
*Melt the phone*

It's been a LOVELY evening, but Some SPACE ROCKS need to be Crushed, Some Points need to be made, and Hank... meets me in my Office.

Bow-out with some dignity.

I prefer "I don't know" because it strikes right to the heart of the issue. Either way, we'll see how this shapes up.
