Nope.
The skill required to pull this off under the nose of Valkyrie surveillance says not. And the timing suggests that the perp had access to high-level internal UN plans, since the plan to fix Sydney was actually brought forward at short notice, which means the sabotage was too.

We're either dealing with a very subtle and well-informed Antagonist infiltrator, or human sabotage.
I agree that it could be human sabotage. There was speculation that a human doing sabotage was a UN higher up backstabbing a rival/Sandra. I pointed out that the motive could merely be resentment towards UN's shady behavior and as was further pointed out, their open corruption.

The info got leaked from someone high up in the UN, but it doesn't require that the leak was an intentional plan by said bigwig.

Fair enough mate. I've written other scenes like this previously, like the fishing class over the old city.
You reckon this segment was worse than that one? Or is it more that these kinda scenes just not really your cup of tea?

I honestly can't say, because if I reread looking for it that will heavily bias the results. The main reason I mentioned it was that it distinctly stood out on a casual read-through.

Partially I think, because it was a lot of "Tell" without much "Show" framing device interwoven. And as a result seemed less like "Anna learning/researching about something" and more like "Avalanche telling the reader"

Anyway, on a completely unrelated note: have the people trying to understand Anna's explanations tried involving translation specialists like were met in the club? Because ultimately it seems to come down to Anna not knowing any of the formal words and thus having had to invent her own language for conceptualizing impeller manipulation. With the additional confusing factors of thus having it made entirely out of misused loan words from a child's vocabulary, and also being a purely mental tool Anna never needed to verbalize and formalize

@Avalanche: I just want to say (with a hat tip to @UberJJK for touching on this before I could get to it) that this:
>"Sandra owns a jet!"

>"Huh? Oh yeah, Blue Moon, cause the UN only come around to help once a-"

>"Oi, c'mon now, Setsu. Sandra isn't like that, and we're UN now, too. Uh yeah, we've seen that plane around, Anna, you got to ride in it?"

>"That's right! It's amazing. It's got a swimming pool in it."

>"… Does it really now."

>"A pool? They spent money on a pool on a jet? Well that's… nice, yeah."

You pause, not sure what to say. Neither Koujirou nor Setsuna seem all that excited, or happy about Sandra's jet. You search around, and make yet another subject switch.
Is an absolutely excellent piece of characterization and really adds depth and verisimilitude to Koujirou and Setsuna. It's a really quick exchange, but it's very nearly my favorite moment in the entire update.

Also @Avalanche I like how you chargen subtly with Instructor Leonhart. Going to the underwater ruin that was her old apartment with her family, literally carrying a copy of her home in her impeller...

Somehow I have a feeling she's not the only Valkyrie carrying baggage.

Also srsly Sandra's family is filthy rich wtf

I also like how their responses contrast with Anna's.
It's not just a subtle difference in their histories**, it's a real sign of how much thought and work goes into the characters.

**Koujirou and Setsuna grew up being very aware they were have-nots.
Anna, in contrast, likely spent a lot of time on starvation rationing, but was probably still one of her community's better off.
There was never any (material) luxeries for Anna to be jealous of.
Setsuna and Koujirou still remember those feelings of jealousy.

[X] Wait. STRATNET's assessment appears correct. You will hold, unless something goes seriously awry. You should do your best to not place your squadron in danger, the drones are quickly replaceable and expendable. Keeping your ability, or that of your Heavy Particle Projectors to make such long range attacks through terrain secret will be strategically significant in the medium term future.

Personally, my thought was baggage on Anna's end- She remembers Refugees coming to Town, and then they made everything worse. More mouths to feed, more resources required to maintain the town, and Anna herself mentioned that whole 'Can't trust people' mindset she had once and REALLY does not want to come back to. I suspect Refugees would do it- positive time-line Anna's Town isn't overwhelmed by outsiders who grow jealous and end up pushing Anna to sounding the Ragnarok horn...And being the only survivor.

You seem to be responding to a different section of the text.

Anna was upset at ever being labled a refugee, but I would say that's because, in her experience, refugees get lynched.

It is worth noting that as far as STRATNET is concerned with regards to Anna things have changed. Before it wanted to throw her into the depth of hell ASAP because she is a bullshit tier combatant. However that was because STRATNET only had data on Anna's combat abilities. Now thanks to our work with UNHCR the UN has an idea about how bullshit Anna's builder capabilities are. The update specifically calls out that they are only rebuilding the Sydney Arcology because of Anna:

That alone is impressive but it gets more so when you consider just what Sydney has been retasked towards:

as far as I can tell, I might have missed something but I've done some searching, Armstrong base is the only purely industrial Arcology. This represents a significant increase in industrial capability for the UN.

Given the way logistics work odds are good STRATNET has determined that Anna overhauling the UN's entire logistical train is vastly more important for the war effort then simply having another super-combatant. After all they already have plenty of 300 users and even if Anna in Durga is about equal to an Ace in a 300 suit get ten of them and she'll be overwhelmed. Things might change if you can get Anna in a 300 suit but there have been enough issues raised that odds are decent even STRATNET isn't sure how that will play out.

Improvements to industry though? They improve everything. That isn't even getting into Anna's usage as a researcher/teacher. Going by the few numbers we have the UN seems to produce more Aces then the Antagonists Type-Zeros. However Type-Zeros on average significantly out perform Aces even with 300 suits. Wave Force could be a massive equalizer even if it means trading Aces for Type-Zeroes. Given that Anna has already demonstrated the ability to further improve the Wave Force keeping her alive to max out that research is yet another massive game changer.

Basically over the last couple updates Anna has more or less proven that she is more valuable to the UN on the rearlines revolutionizing their everything then she is out on the front as just another super-combatant.
This, basically. Anna's combat capabilities are immense, but they are hardly unique--the Wave Force can be (and has been!) taught to other high-level Aces. The UN is clearly gaining aces at an appreciable rate, even if its number of 300 frames remains the same. However, Anna's ability to A) refine the Wave Force technique and how effectively/efficiently it can be taught is a much bigger game-changer in the war against Type Zeroes than she herself is, B) make breakthroughs in the reverse-engineering of her HPPs would give the UN a way to mass produce a revolutionary new weapons system for all Valks that would make all Valks more effective in combat (against normal AGs and Type-Zeroes both) and thus boost Valk survival rates--plus, the potential for massively-scaled up versions to be employed on Valkyrie Battleships in space, and C) her sheer capabilities as a builder offer unique opportunities to improve the UN's logistical, industrial, and strategic position in ways that other Aces just can't compete with.

And as long as she's kept out of significant combat and her true capabilities kept secret, she can serve as a secret trump card against the AGs in case of emergency. The AGs trying to do to Perth what they did to Sydney would probably fail at the point where Anna hits all four of them at once with a Wave Force attack, causing all four Type Zeroes to nope the fuck out of there in sheer panic, because now their Impellers are all completely gone and it all might be a big trap for them for all they know.

[X] Engage. STRATNET's assessment appears correct, however the possibility of a the Antagonists counterattacking your position with long range teleports is remote, and easily intercepted by your Interdiction unless the Antagonists use an exorbitant volume of Higgs. The risk you and your squadron will bear is minimal compared to the potential lives saved by your attacks at the Antagonist formations. Revealing your ability to attack at extreme ranges through obstructions to the Antagonists is not consequential in the short term.

--[X] Offer Yukari some food. You're not sure what yet, but a quick trawl through her profile will fix that.
--[X] Don't bring up the problem. People seem to not like that very much.

The reason I'm voting for not doing the sane thing here is because this is a story, not an actual battlefield.

Earlier, some one mentioned that this feels like an Anime moment. I concur, and more to the point, think that there's evidence within the text to suggest that we're supposed to disobey orders here. There's a lot of "you don't have to obey orders, Anna" being thrown around by the instructors, and while all the arguments about her utility as a builder/trump card are valid...

I think we need to remember the thesis of this story.

Anna wants to be a better person. Being a very good hammer is better than being a good weapon, but it's not self-actualization. In a story about people learning to be better people, then obeying orders and getting punished for it is an ironic lesson, while disobeying orders and getting rewarded is a triumph of the individual. The narrative momentum of the story (plus OP's literal declaration of importance) seem to indicate we need to put aside what would make sense in the "real" world and instead ask what sense a story-logic makes.

I think it's inevitable that we see a hidden danger here. I think there's also a non-zero chance that there could be someone messing with TACNET, trying to make Sandra look bad, though that's less of a factor. Instead, let it be enough that this feels like season-finale levels of dramatic, and while it's very possible this would bite us in the ass I think we should err on the side of being paranoid.

Not just "might", there are 44 high level aces, plus at least one ace student per class. By my napkin math at her listed 2 1 0.5 rate is closest to 24 12 6 for a total of 42, plus the 2 reserve for 44. With potentially 36 classes in training and each having at least one ace student that's 80 aces per academy, or 240 aces between the three academies. There are just over 600 aces total, and 315 of them are actively using a 300 frame, so these three academies comprise basically the entirety of the UN's top level valkyrie reserve.

Attacking into Anna's super move with four entire Type Zero suppression squadrons sitting waiting to pounce is total suicide.

I remember there being some speculation of UN wanting to extend the war so it doesn't have to deal with what happens after or something. Maybe that's what the sabotage is about, prolonging the conflict?

Sandra and Durga came to an agreement: the humans are Sandra's harem, the Cores are Durga's.
I need to find that omake where Durga is hitting on other cores :V

A single human. Wrapped in metal and conceit? What chance did they stand?
Enough of one, apparently. Humans are winning.

Slowly. Painfully. But winning nonetheless.
You only have time for the briefest of glimpses before the room morphs with a flicker.
Does she have an entire house in there?
Uh- you- that was- You're not fat, you're just tall... and dense.
Assume the average human has a density of approximately one g/cm^3, aka water. Aluminum has a density of 2.7, copper 8.95, iron 7.87, silver 10.49, palladium 12.02, technetium 11.5, and uranium a whopping 19.05 g/cm^3.

Anna is still less dense than Koujirou. :V
"Wow," whispers Leonhart, "Your field is… fierce. It's very territorial. Try to relax a little Anna. Don't try to lash out all the time, imagine it like holding hands- wow! Shaking hands, not holding, shaking hands."
lewdbutIapprove.jpg
"Yes, something that Shuri introduced. Apparently she was inspired by a sim exercise that your flight had."
This hand of mine is glowing red! Its loud roar tells me to grasp victory! ERRUUPTING! SHINING! THUUUUUUMB!
You have discovered a research dead end. The warrior-monster character cannot perform group Impeller actions. This limit may be removed by special actions or plot events.
The solution is clearly impeller hugs.
Juggling a dozen eggs above their heads each, the other three members strain, trying to push your Impeller back.
The juggling a dozen eggs is really impressive. Professional jugglers can maybe manage eight, IIRC fourteen is about the limit.
"No, why would I be concerned about what you do in your spare time? Don't come back to me for help if you fall behind in your studies again," snaps Setsuna.
Translating from tsundere...

Translation: "I very much care that you are spending time with a woman who is not myself, but admitting to jealously means I also have to confront the possibility that I am romantically interested in you. Baka."
Also untrue. By statistical averages- Ah! No uh, you didn't, you didn't mean uhhhh- you- you were confirming his gender! It was a valid action to solve a reasonable query!
Anna just looked up roughly all the dick pics on the internet at once, didn't she?
This is strange, no -a search confirms- this is unprecedented. To suddenly multiply Impeller field capacity- it is completely unheard of.
Shounen protagonist bullshit confirmed.
"ORAAAA!" roars Koujirou, and K2 throws a wild haymaker at your decoy.
Is this a Stand?
ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA

Oh Anna, you beautiful nightmare cryptid of Australia
Canada, actually. Probably from near Castlegar. Aaaaand now I have the Wendigo song stuck in my head.
Does Anna even realize she's talking back
IIRC it was decided that Anna and Durga would use the same VA, doing the same voice, in the Project Valkyrie anime.

And most interesting that Coke Zero experiences something during teleport. That's a chekov's gun right there.

I see a lot of people voting for Yukari helping decorate Anna's room despite that being on the list of things that we already voted for and just haven't happened yet.
There was also the idea about it being the Childhood Friend who got probably got turned a brain in a jar as an Anatagonist experiment like that one girl from Muv Luv... with different circumstances obviously for those who know of it. *Cough* Or an AI uploaded into their system and used to predict human behavior or... something.
I still maintain Bold Anna is just Angry Anna. That's either Anna's superego or possibly Durga responding to it.
By engaging the Antagonists, we can increase our independence and plot relevance. As far as dealing with Yukari goes, we can draw upon our resources, and also, by asking Koujirou, we get to increase our screentime, and thus plot relevance.
I think our training with Koujiro has probably raised audience awareness more than anything we'll do here, away from the majority of the cast and main setting. And right now a lot of people are probably worrying about Anna's mental state and ability to play well with others. Let's not start out being insubordinate for no good reason the first time we take orders from Stratnet anywhere near active combat. That's more likely to have people attempting to curtail rather than increase our freedoms.
