shame on the sniper.

In the sniper's defense an extra pod walked into my overwatch while she was missing her shots, so that was nice.

I miss long war. I miss having the exact layout + spawnpoints of every map in the game memorized with the sole exception of furies. I miss suppression being a tier 1 ability. I miss snipers with walk-and-shoot *error forget abilityname*. I miss RUN AND GUN being a tier 1 ability. I miss --

Okay, I miss long war. Why the hell am I even playing xcom 2?

...

Oh. Anna. Right.

Snapshot is fucking terribad, srsly.

First off, Sniper's get more accurate the longer the range which means on just about any map with decent fire lanes you can pretty much garauntee your squadsight sniper is hitting everything thanks to 100% shots on everything they can reach(Annete Durand acquisition mission is so fucking easy with a pair of them and some assaults.) Next off, it is worth noting that I have not seen better than 75% shot accuracy from a sniper firing at something THEY can see, and Snapshot reuces that even more. Finally, In the Zone is SHIT because you can't oneshot ANYTHING with more than ten HP, aka, everything you see that isn't a Sectoid Commander after you take down the Overseer UFO, not reliably anyway. So Doubletap is the better choice in 99% of the situations(I have literally never wished for In the Zone), and as the final nail in the coffin, shots taken that turn take a -10 to aim so you probably can't hit the broadside of a barn.(srsly, whenever I watched an Advent Snapshot take a shot I was always, "That's gonna miss" and the vast majority of the time they did)

Long war mod. Snap shot is offered against disabling shot and precision shot. Fuck both of those compared to snap, at least on lower difficulties (? Maybe on higher I would take precision in the interest of onerounding as many enemies as I can). In the zone isn't even a consideration; it's offered against mayhem -- or double tap, which is infinitely superior to both.

I don't remember what perc. shot does, but I know that Disabling is useful as hell. Saved my ass more than once when I got a surprise pod or three.

This isn't the X-COM thread, guys...

It wasn't the geometry thread either. Derails are how we encourage Avalanche to write.

I don't actually know what precision shot is... that said, Disabling Shot would actually be useful, assuming you could do with a pistol so your SECRET AGENT MAN could use it... sigh

Stahp.

Stahp.

... K. Possible delays. Also goddamn finals.

Just read the Infantry interlude. Good stuff Avalanche. My favorite part was probably White bitching about never seeing his wife, the 300. Feels like there's a lot of meat in the story of being 'the military spouse, high-flying Valkyrie edition'.

And the quiet brain rewiring that's taken with a surprising amount of stride is a bit chilling, but interesting.

Also the fact that at least half of the characters of the short are related to the various instructors of Perth Academy.

I really liked that section, because from it we got so much world-building.

@Avalanche

So I got two more questions now.

First, if we had picked for Kojirou to already have combat experience and for Yukari to have been the older sister how would their relationship be like?

Second, you mentioned in one of your posts that there were a multitude of ways Anna and Shuri's relationship could have gone badly. Was the one we falled into one of the worse ones or the less bad ones?

Yukari is the older sister. The other sibling option was "Loudly Possessive Tsundere Younger Sister". Perhaps easy to mistake that option for a certain childhood friend that we do have.

As far as Anna and Shuri, I suspect that any outcome where they haven't totally pissed each other off is a good one. I really want to see them get along but they are both so thorny.

That's what you get with traumatised Aces in the middle of an invasion of genocidal aliens. Frankly, Shuri's probably been assigned to Perth not because of her physical injuries (although they are part of it) but because Sandra asked for her and their psychological profiles indicated they'd work well together and support each other in the face of all the shit they're going to have to deal with eventually.

I am sorry but... excuse me?

I know "The Sibling" is not Setsuna. And I know Yukari is already the older sibling and the other option was the "Loudly Possessive Tsundere Younger Sister" I just called "The Sibling" as in, I could be refering to both or either, "Yukari" for ease of typing. And also because I don't know if the younger sister would have a different name.

Did you misunderstand something?

Presuming -1 with something like Noblesse Ojou, Golden Ace and Monster Warrior, they'd be very close. Koujirou would have been at Valk Academy with Yukari through her first year -but actually been a combat Valk for longer than her- then dropped out halfway through due to mysterious unexplained circumstances. Then he'd probably join super sekrit squirrel experiments to regain his Valk compatibility after hearing about Yukari in Alaska. Basically, Yukari would be very close to winning the main character slot.

You'd all probably start in second year instead of first. Koujirou would have skipped a grade, Yukari would drop down one after Alaska, the two Aces would have skipped First year, the Ojou also skipping first year with hard work or something. Setsuna would be the POV character of the anime as she worked super hard to also skip a grade into second year to Join Koujirou and Yukari.

Your relationship with her is fairly neutral right now. You don't like Shuri's attitude towards teammates and she's decided to just treat you based on the merit of your skill than your personality, which is honestly really bewildering to her. Meeting Shuri on your first night with Sandra ameliorated lots of the more interesting paths, joining with Koujirou right away at first update also neutralised some interesting plot directions. Honestly, Neutral is as good as it's going to get until your focus arcs appear.

XxXxXxXxXx

In other news; update sometime. Been a little down lately.

Would we make more sense to her if she knew we had been out in the wilderness of canada for 8 years?

Unlikely. I think that while Shuri does have some experience with the quirks of Aces due to the many, many deaths they'll see in the line of duty, Anna's 'all lives are precious and worth caring about' approach is alien to her. Not least in part because her formative combat experience in the Pakistan Air Force involved throwing her and her squadron mates into the meat grinder, and any losses would be replaced with fresh meat soon enough.

The complete lack of reinforcement made Anna care more because it meant that every life she lost was someone she couldn't ever talk to again, while their houses would stay empty. Shuri's high attrition squadrons saw most dead Valkyries replaced fairly quickly by inexperienced and poorly trained Valkyries. The veterans, including her, would have to distance themselves from their new squadron mates, if only to protect themselves from the grief of having to bury another young friend.

What about the fact they never ask us when making choices?

Even when we were the veteran fighter of the trio, we were never asked or consulted before joining another team. Then being a fellow veteran, our opinion was still ignored.

In character we could justify not expending more time with our flight because they basicaly have ignored us since day one. Even the young inexperienced menbers of it.

Granted, we aren't a very social person, but all Aces are somewhat broken, the fact even a fellow Ace steamroams over us is insulting.

More so since we are in a manga and Japan cares a lot about respect.

Even if Anna doesn't realize this herseft, we have decided to expend less time with our flight, since unconsciously we know they are doing well without us and that we can do more good if we improve our secret weapon.

And now I want to write about a suicide squad stuck with first gen valks due to not having enough budget and the superiors basicaly waiting until enough of the squad dies to transfer the rest and just give up the territory for lost to the Antagonists.

Mmm, that could be the background story for my horror survivor pilot omake.

Basicaly early on, with Valks being new and untested tech, the losses were terrible.

Heck, a Valk suddenly stoping functioning during battle must have happened more than once.
