Amazed we didn't question this sooner. You know how Yukari is an Elite, and how all Elites are supposed to spend hours and hours practicing with their flights to improve themselves, and how Yukari has somehow found time to spend her evenings dedicated to helping her brother and his friend from home?

She doesn't have a flight in her year anymore, does she? I mean, that seems obvious from just this update, but all the clues were there before.
I believe Yukari jumped ahead a year. She cautioned Anna against doing the same because she'd miss out on a lot of things.

She may have never had a Flight, or else the 3rd year Flights had all solidified and Cliqued before she showed up.

[X]Breakfast: Bath and clean. Eat breakfast. Do other normal things. Apologies to your Flight for so rudely leaving last night.

Not too certain on what to pick as far as lunch goes.

[X]Lunch: Head out to Western Australia OTG 507 to inspect and set up the sensor configuration. Experiment with first stage of wave force.

We could definitely use some more time to ourselves, and us mysteriously disappearing will totally be a plot point. Gotta grind those relevance points, after all.

There has been several references to us "consuming the highs supply of high level antagonists". So now I think we know how we do that now...

For lunch we have several options:
Lunch with the flight, if the entire flight stick together this may be a great option, as there's pretty much only Setsuna who is likely not to notice trauma points. Also this will likely hint at the fact we have a troubled history without triggering a new trauma.

Elite cafeteria seems like a really bad timing. Anna being an ace is just becoming known and we just had a secret training excercise with a new and interesting team. Plenty of interesting stuff for people with big egos, and all things we don't want to talk about. This seems like a very bad idea to me.

The instructors lounge seems like a place of peace and quiet, which may be good for us.

The Wave Force training might be cool, but will draw attention from pretty much everyone. After all, most training's are public (see mentions of recordings and other material) and Wave Force is extremely loud, so we're likely to get spotted. Can we handle the attention? If we can, this might be a great option.

[X]Breakfast: Ask Druga what's needed to rebuild your lost particle projectors
[X]Morning: Continue as is. (Transcendent Offense)
[X]Lunch: Have lunch with your Flight, trust the more sociable people to realize what topics you don't want to talk about.

Explicitly not so. The Elites cafeteria are mostly the Valkyries with actual field experience. They know not to poke each other, and it's more a place for them to get away from all the overenthusiastic rookies who hadn't "seen the elephant" yet. The reason they get their own cafeteria is that the newbie cadets would bug elites and aces otherwise. See the idiot who exposed our Ace status to the world. They think it's awesome, but EVERYONE at this level of skill knows that to get there, you must go through hell.

Wave Force might be a good way to get it out of Anna's system though. Focus on something she knows how to do, how to fight better

Wave force is megaclassified, so megaclassified that we had dig beyond our clearance (read:hack or be approved specially) to access full information about the UN projects and we invented it. If you don't think the moment the UN receives word that we're heading out to a remote training ground to practice (which they will) that they won't cordon off the area to anyone below 300-level and blackout any public sensors and basically bring the god damn lead curtain down around the entire place well, you haven't been reading about the same paranoid, literally deleting any mentions of our name from the public net, survivalist near-military-dictatorship that I have.

EDIT: That won't stop our flight from spying on us if they catch us leaving though, because lol genre conventions

Actually, I'm willing to bet that it is already a classified 'no fly zone,' that is located well away from the arcology, and probably any other surviving forms of human habitation. We probably won't even see any antagonsists! (Until Anna's arc proper, or after)

... I don't think we hacked it right? We just had special clearance to see all the projects branching off from Wave Force (including lots O math) due to us being the inventor, and our status as #1.

Besides we're trying to translate it into it's own formula IIRC so others can use it. lots o math time. Obviously we should join the Super Computer Five Dimensional Math Club.

As the Protagonist, it's one of his highest level skills! We just have an automatically low opinion of him because he (technically) inhabits a harem genre anime. Luckily, it's also a real-robot/super-robot genre with actual characterization and build-up, so mayhap he shall redeem himself in our eyes. (Fittingly for an idiot hero, he won't even know he's on trial, and will still probably pass.)

Open secret: I already like Koujirou. He may be an idiot, but not in ways that are terrible.

I mean, take a look at this:

"Hey Anna, how come you didn't tell me you were an Ace? I mean, I knew for sure after yesterday night, but before, when you first decided to join."

Because it didn't matter in the end.
You're not really sure. It simply… made you uncomfortable.

"I don't really like the attention and… it doesn't really matter, right?"

"Well, of course it matters. It's-"

Koujirou starts to reply, but he meets your eyes and cuts himself off. There's a moment of silence where Koujirou reconsiders his words. He seems to find and then discard several answers, his brow furrowing and lips turning down as he appears to argue with himself.
Yukari saves you by shaking her head minutely and speaking up, "Koujirou might appear absentminded, but he's actually fairly perceptive of the people around him, I don't think we will need to worry too much about him trying that again."
"That's the last part of the Alaskan Offensive and the Great Battle right? It's something I really want to see in the simulators-"

Sandra throws an uncharacteristically cold look at Koujirou.

He blinks and cuts himself off as he notices the glare from Sandra and looks around the table.

Yukari is still looking intently at Sandra's datapad, seemingly lost in her own world. Setsuna looks just as uncertain as Koujirou, glancing between Yukari and Sandra
"Ha-!" he gives the blade a swing, still sitting-

"-aaaaaoooly crap Anna!" he yelps as he notices you, jumping off his bed.

He was probably surprised.

"Good morning. Are you okay now?"

Koujirou stares at you for a second with wide eyes, "Y-yeah. No problems," he glances down at his gauntlet, "Just finishing my treatment now I guess..."

"I see," you respond. Koujirou didn't act any different, blithe as usual. He didn't seem nearly as hurt now, unlike… unlike yesterday.

Guilt settles heavier on your back as you think about what happened.

"I'm sorry."

The words burst out of you, almost a shout.

"Eh?"

"I… hurt you. Yesterday in the sims. I-"

"Woah! Woah, stop right there Anna," Koujirou yells, waving his arms into a cross.

You fall silent, resigned. If he won't accept your apology, then there was nothing more that you could do.
Suspicion. Condemnation. Blame. Attacks.

Retaliation?

"You didn't hurt me, I overrode the safeties on Kandakara myself. No way your fault."

You blink in surprise.

"Heck, you weren't even shooting at me. The only thing you did was that flick at the end there," he smiles ruefully.

"Even so, when we shouldn't have needed to fight, I-"

"Wait. Hold up, Anna, it was just practice, no hard feelings from anyone," he says, "I mean, I forgot to even tell you what practice consisted of until we were in sim space."

"I should have refused. I knew that nothing good would come from fighting against humans, but I…"

Koujirou huffs slightly, looking exasperated.

"Hey, c'mon now. I learned my Frame's name and unlocked one of my weapon configurations. With how things are, I might even get another one of my Frame systems next time we practice against each other."

Next time?

"No. There will be no next time, not against others. I won't risk it," you flatly reject.

Koujirou scratches his head, looking put out.

"Look Anna, we are all told to treat the scenarios in the simulators like real life. If I needed to hit an Antagonist as fast as you on the battlefield, I would have to push myself just as far," he says quietly, "This is practice for the real thing, are you going to tell me that's wrong? "

…He was right.

"I… no, but- I still don't want to hurt you- or anyone."

Koujirou stays silent, frowning, then suddenly brightens up, "How bout this, next time, you won't."

…? You wait for clarification.

Koujirou grins at you, bouncing on his toes for a few seconds.

"C'mon Anna, ask."

…He's lost you.

"Ask what?"

Koujirou pouts, then with a slight sigh continues, "Ask me what you won't do."

Alright…?

"I won't do what?"

"Hurt me. You won't."

A startled laugh escapes you at the ironic echo and Koujirou makes a small fist pumping motion at that.

"That… how can you be sure?"

"Don't worry, I wont go nuts with the safeties next time. The sim will do my job for me."

You stare at Koujirou, somewhat suspicious.

"Really! I won't be screwing with my safety settings when practicing with you. I promise."

You nod slightly at that. It was… nice that Koujirou didn't blame you for his injury, that he was still kind to you. Nice but… strange.

…You felt light. Almost floaty.

"Then I will hold us both to that."

As Yukari says, I think he's fairly sensitive.

As for the hilarious harem genre escapades or flaws that might come up for him, well, 90% of that can be blamed on what I term "contrivance". That's not a bad thing in a parody / subversive piece of literature like this. But take as an example, the idea that 199 out of 200 valkyries are female (or whatever the ratio is). That is, to put it simply, contrived. And the result is Koujirou is the only male in the cast, which is also therefore contrived.

The only drawback in the Valkyrie cores was that the ratio of compatibility was skewered towards women. Heavily.

Amongst the twenty thousand or Valkyries in service currently, there were less than one hundred men.

That made you part of the .05% of the entire force whom was male.

You suppose some of those other guys might have felt proud. You?

The door opens. You glance over, your roommate was staring at you, eyes wide, before they slam the door back shut.

You just felt awkward.

That's actually a very reasonable attitude to the entire situation. Which brings me to my next point...

Shenanigans. Are harmless and mostly not his fault - partly brought on by the gender ratio contrivance, partly due to other contrivances. Is Koujirou at fault when Setsuna constantly gets jealous? I don't think so... maybe if his behavior is unreasonable, so it would depend on the situation, but as for what's happened on the quest-screen everything seems to be the tsundere getting possessive. He's definitely an idiot for forgetting about her (if that actually was the case), but for not being issued a male dress uniform if such a thing even exists? Is it silly to hide in a robot dolly to avoid being bopped on the head and yelled at in a friendly manner? Sure. Does it make Koujirou an idiot in a bad way? I don't think so.

So the next thing... Ignorance. This is a bit of a contrivance too, because as a PoV character Koujirou can't really know more than the audience does. But honestly...

I don't think Koujirou is all that ignorant. See the following:

Continuing the rhythmic breathing, Koujirou sweeps the front of the Flight. To the south of their Flight, one hundred and fifty or so kilometers distant, another cluster of white lights pull ahead of the surface-hugging cruise missiles and raced forwards to slam into the Antagonists on the shore.

[ID Confirm: Emergency Fast Response Squadron: Pinnacle]

Koujirou sighed as he watched them pull ahead of his Flight rapidly. He had just been told to watch right ahead, but... this was another one of the top squadrons from the Three Hundred that he got to watch.

There were only eighteen Valkyries in Pinnacle, not really enough to be called a squadron, but then again, they were part of the Three Hundred. Rules didn't really apply the same way for them.

From this, you can tell Koujirou is obviously a Valkyrie fan and knows common knowledge trivia.

But he's also brand new to piloting. So how exactly can he be expected to know the specifics of how to use a Valkyrie Frame? Actually, his PoV sections in the latest update and the talk with Anna in the hospital in Update 14 prove that in the short time he's been in the academy, he's familiarized himself to reasonable expectations with common Valkyrie systems. He's learning at the pace the academy expects a student to learn at. And then the narration will naturally treat him like an idiot for not knowing some common knowledge fact except he's operated a Valkyrie and been in the UN Armed Forces for less than one week, what exactly do you expect from the guy?

The only real idiot thing he did was pushing the simulator safeties in a spar. So he's needlessly reckless, which is stupid. But I'll make an issue of it only if it happens a second time.

I think in the hypothetical anime, Koujirou would suffer from rather unfavorable editing. Oh, maybe not deliberately, but just that what gets depicted would follow the director's and studio's expectations of the genre and audience.

Going by the latest update, I think I got a new context on his relationship with Setsuna.

Simple thing, he's probably not accidentally setting her off, aside from the sleep smooch thing. He does it on purpose, getting whapped on purpose because...really, Setsuna probably likes the shenanigans, even if she'd never admit it to herself, her reactions tell the truth to anyone who's got more than Anna levels of social sensitivity.

They know each other well enough that trolling/smacking each other won't change their relationship, so they both go all out on each other. Heck, even his sister smacks him regularly enough for him to identify her by the way she hit him on the head.

And of course, the Harem Protagonist is required by genre to be capable of resolving or compensating for the issues of all the harem candidates.

Hang on, back up. Valkyries don't exist, so that's also contrived. And its not 2070 so everything is contrived. Unless Avalanche has a time machine and this isn't fiction.

Well, to take your post seriously (I know, I know), it's the difference between premises that are easier to accept and premises that aren't and that we understand only exist so that the author can subvert the expectations either we or popular convention put on them.

Which is completely reasonable, if a bit focused on head-bops. And actually, trolling / play-hitting certainly resembles some real-world relationships. But it can be presented as lol stupid harem anime antics, or it can be presented realistically.

Well, we'll see. Depends how that plays out.

Well, we'll see. Depends how that plays out.
He's made surprisingly good progress on dealing with Anna at least. Even without knowing the issues, he managed to dodge them all blindfolded in a way I wish he could do in combat, and reassure Anna in EXACTLY the right way to calm her down.

Which is completely reasonable, if a bit focused on head-bops. And actually, trolling / play-hitting certainly resembles some real-world relationships. But it can be presented as lol stupid harem anime antics, or it can be presented realistically.
Well the key factor to contextualizing it was that he only does it with Setsuna. Nobody else.
