I know this is an absolutely terrible idea in most situations, BUT our main objective here is to paint such a big target on our back that the mage will decide to throw the caution away and try to get to us instead of our mom... And I may be wrong, but this option seems the one which will make him more likely to bite the bait.

No we want him to reveal himself... there is something that will be very helpful. But one thing to remember.
