Hyper niche Stepstones Dating Sim.
Howdy folks, it's me, M43ST3R 43MM0S, here again with another sick game review for the good readers of Redkeep Rumors Gaming! To catch you all up and introduce those who are just joining us here, I've been scrounging the web for the best games this side of the narrow sea, if you're looking for games from the other side of the pond please click
here. Now then, last week we went over one of the greatest adventure games of all time,
Bronze and Steel, in which you create a knight of the Andals and navigate both the battlefields and politics of early Westeros, very highly acclaimed if plagued by age and legacy bugs in the WhiteSparrow engine.
This week we'll be looking at an up-and-comer to the scene of RPG's in the form of an indie title,
Open Heart Dragon Surgery, a banger title if ever I heard one. Apparently coded, created, and illustrated all by one person who goes by the name "SpiceloverSupreme", a native of the islands and self-proclaimed avid historian. They said in an email correspondence "...While digging through the Port Tabasco public library I cam across a few old books on the first Westerosi lords of the Stepstones, and while we all learn about Daemons war and the names we never really spent too much time on the subject, so I figured why not make a history lesson in the form of some of my favorite Yi-Ti Dating Sims..."
Quite the explanation for the games making, though how does this "Historical Dating Sim" really hold up? The Game itself runs on Spicelover's own RPGmkr engine, and runs fairly similarly some older EsRPG's like
Monkey King and
War for the Five Forts, with all character represented by a 32-bit sprite until spoken to which will then reveal an illustrated and emotive portrait, though non important characters will receive repeat portraits and sprites. There are also EsRPG combat elements, a party of four with skills and classes, but these are a side portion of the game and only really a distraction from the main draw, the romanceable characters.
The game has a staggering
20 romance options! All with complete and strangly in-depth paths and choices, as each has a good, bad, and unrequited love "middle" ending. The cast of characters would be strange to see outside of a historical RPG, which means it's a little strange to see them here, but the inclusions are a rather nice set of options. Just a few of the choices are
- Lucien Targaryen, Protector of the Stepstones and Guardian of the Narrow Sea
- Davion Tabasco, Lord of Port Tabasco
- Tytos Crackhall, Lord of Sunstone
- Valaar Vaeltigar, King of the Pirates
- Lorena Celtigar, Stormsinger of the Fourteen
and so much more! I have to be honest folks, this is a lot of time and effort to put into a dating sim of all things, Spicelover said in that same Email conversation, "...I really did have too much time on my hands, I must have sunk months into the game at a time, I'm surprised I finally though the thing was finished...", to which I have to agree! the amount of content in this game is staggering, and the fact that is has a graphical component and a semi-open world is an incredible feat of modern game development. All of this including the unconfirmed rumor of a secret path found by avid gamers and data miners, with an unreachable ending labeled only "Vandal". Spicelover refused to comment on the existence of such a path stating only "...I swear to the fires I will ghost you if you keep asking about that fucking cryptid, it was hard enough finding what I did...", mysterious indeed...
In other news about the game, and what might have brought you to us, is the controversy surrounding the game itself, as Spicelover presents the game as "historical" it seems to have reached certain parts of the gaming community in a negative light, as certain forum poster have voiced their concerns about depicting these national heroes as one poster put it "...fucking animes...", and the controverssy spilled off the forums and into the halls of power as one represenative proposed the now infamous "Protection of history" bill that would ban "...Uncouth or unnecessarily outlandish depictions of Historical Figures...", with the representative in question directly refrencing the game in a speech, while the bill was shot down in spectacular fashion just last week it did serve to propel a game that would have been confinded to a small but dedicated community into the spotlight of gaming. Spicelover said to us, "How the hell was I supposed to know the old fart was prowling my forum?"
Spicelover has stated however that there will be no DLC or expanded content even after an explosion in sales as they wish to work on other projects and find time for more personal matters.
All in all I thought it was a wonderful game, when I first played it I got the "Unrequited Love" ending for Valaar Vaeltigar and watched as he sailed in the sunset with only a small Valyrian steel dagger to remember him by, a route that was so moving that it actually brought me to tears. Though I was happy to help the man find some happiness I understand that he had to leave (though I did love to watch him go). This reviewer finds that this game is a masterwork, a true diamond in the rough, but not without it's limits and flaws. I'll give it a 9/10, Fuck the bandits at Vhagars pass, I just wanted the masterwork sword to gift Valaar.
Next week we'll be looking at a game from a land a little colder, and closer to all our hearts as gamers, The Norths own shooter from last generation,
Direwolves!, we'll be killing frozen zombies all week folks and we'll see you next time on Redkeep Rumors Gaming!
(AN: This came to me as a waking fever dream and I had to get it out of my skull, It's like if the US tried to ban a game that let you have a harem of founding fathers, starting with a bookish anime twink Thomas Jefferson and ending with Senpai George Washington.)
