You are probably right. I say daemon as maegor because personality wise he is closer.
Most nightmare scenario for not Lucien would be marrying Laena and Rhaenyra (somehow). Daemon is here to stay and presumably his kids will be more inclined to helping us out. Rhaenys would be our mother in law. Though if our hypothetical offseping married each other that would solve some of the bloodline succession issues by sidestepping it.
Or make it worse.

The Faith would never allow you to marry two ladies with claims on the iron throne, even if they have no authority. It would cause another Faith Rebellion and that might be bad for everyone.
Especially when there are things going on with foreign shores that we have to worry about.

I'd imagine having the Velaryons controle the throne would make taking controle of the Stepstones harder for us. Becsuse they would probably want them for themselves.

What about taking it from someone else? We know the citadel have Valyria steel chains. Just take enough and Hire a Qohor smite to reforge it. Just ignore all the people we would piss off
There is a pirate somewhere running around with Nightfall for the next 20 odd years. Probably be easier to find if we really wanted to.
Also we are 200 years closer to the doom which means it's somewhat easier to find valyrian steel.

No if anything he would make sure we are safe: capture dragonstone and raise the black flag as he now is legitimately a decent chap who wants to get rich.

I think they are very removed cadet lines; Rhea wasn't even the previous one's kid when he died same year as baelon. It's the Jon Arryn issue of just everyone dying.
