Omake: The Best of Daeron Brightflame
I am so confused. I know there's a reference I'm missing and it's killing me.

You will know his name. This thread, will rememeber him!

The hilarious part is that this has been explained a few times, including immediately after the "theory" which was immediately after the chapter with the Frost Dragon but the thread updates so quickly most people still miss it except for those brave few who run The Gauntlet of Discussion.

I did, and this was the fruit of it. I only managed to salvage quotes from the time I was still saving chapters offline. Now that more people are aware of what we have lost, I have but a snippet of what our dear mad cousin was. Behold the results of my travels into the depths of my mememory (card). Behold what DP may have wiped, but never forgotten!

The Best of Daeron Brightflame

Let's start with when we have first met him, surviving all alone in Lys in the middle of the infested Gilded Quarter. When his witty fatalism started worming it's way to our hearts.

Duel Arcana

Eight Day of the Second Month 291 AC

....

"May you find peace in true death," you sigh as your enemy collapses, rot claiming the left side of his face before all the flesh melts from his bones.

You hear a clapping sound so you wheel around and see a young boy sitting out on a window ledge. "Well done. Pity that roast ain't edible."

His annoying sarcasm.

Of Sellswords and Monsters
Eight Day of the Second Month 291 AC

"It is them we hunt," you answer simply.

They scoff and laugh as you expected them to do. Then you speak a spell that has grown as familiar as your own name and take a dragon's form. They scoff no more, their laughter silent. "We have certain advantages that others do not..." you say in a deceptively mild tone.

"Like, it's easier to run from a fight when you can fly away from it too." Daeron spoke up, getting a few chuckles from the sellsword and a glare from you.

Not even gods are safe from him.

A Deal with the Divine

Eight Day of the Second Month 291 AC

"Fucking gods and their bloody speeches," you hear the girl curse as she struggles with her task.

"The Silent God don't do speeches." Dareon spoke up. "You should see his preachers. Waving their arms about trying to spread his word."

That is finally too much for your nerves. You burst into relieved almost hysterical laughter.

His talent that endeared him to us.

Late Farewell

Tenth Day of the Second Month 291 AC

"Surprise, Garin," she calls mischievously as she goes to hug him.

"You're alive..." you hear him whisper, filled with hope.

Wyla's alabaster cheeks take on the slightest rosy tint, as she drops er eyes. ""What? No. I'm sorry... " she adds so softly that you can barely hear it even with your sharpened senses.

"Goodbye, hole-y Lys! Your warm lips, I'll always miss
May you rot in your false sweetness!"

Which of course, lets you hear the bawdy song the annoying kid is singing somewhere belowdeck.

....

She is one broken spell away from immolation, you realize, as you a last notice the fine wisps of shadow passing over her form, visible for both mundane and sorcerous sight. "I thought you might be able to use it too," Wyla adds. "Since you are not a great lover of the sun either."

"A woman with beady eyes, Sharp nose and red cheeks blushing
With teats as huge as pies!"

Embarrassed and wanting to strangle Daeron, you slip away unnoticed by either of the pair, leaving them to their final farewells there under the gentle morning sun where neither truly had a place any more, as much as they might yearn for it.

Of course, we would never have loote- rescued him from Lys if he didn't have magic.

Arcane Achievements

Thirteenth Day of the Third Month 291 AC

Upon arriving home and shedding your canal-side disguises you spend a some time speaking of your friends' of their projects. You keep a sharp eye on Waymar to see if Dany has managed to quiet his misgivings on the matter of her new retainer...

Daeron on the other hand, took to Glyra quickly and too soon do you have to be wary of a barelling gremlin giggling mad in search of the invisible boy. You sigh as you realize that there are now two gremlins in the house.

We also loved him for his self depreciating callousness.

The Orphan Court

Sixteenth Day of the Fifth Month 291 AC

"A Sand Snake they called me since I was a babe, Sand Sanke I'll be here too," Tyene introduces herself simply, her gaze weighting the being in front of her, trying to get a measure of the subtly alien body language no doubt.

"A Fool's Legacy, a Fool in trade, a Fool in a ship of fools," Daeron says as he pluck the strings of his banjo.

What endeared him to most is of course, his hatred of slavery.

Legacy of Horror

Thirtieth Day of the Ninth Month 291 AC

"You won't help them if you set this place on fire," Tyene whispers quietly, reading your frozen expression easily.

"The only thing better than a dead slaver is a burnt husk of one!" Daeron we whined beside you, then ducked as Tyene tried to kick him.

Certainly because of his fascinating stunning performances battle competence.

Thunder and Song

First Day of the Tenth Month 291 AC

You have little attention to spare however as Tyene chooses that moment to call on the judgement of the Weeping Lady upon the sorcerous fiend... if you but had breath to waste you would curse at seeing the thing unharmed by the magic.

That is, until the serpent fiend freezes, staring with rapt fascination at Daeron who is singing a badly tuned version of the Bear and the Maiden Fair.

Daeron succeeds with Barding Song: Fascinate (Morai Rakshasa stunned for 1 round)

What do you do?

Alas that is all the things I was able to save, whicb sadly includes some of the best fights. But if I could just imagine how it read before...

"And who, are you? The proud lord said..."

Of all the songs the damn brat could sing!

His one liners.

DragonParadox said:
Daeron stared at the green filled vial with fear.

"No?! I'm not going to drink that!"

His awesome performances with epic songs.

DragonParadox said:
"But hold your breath
Because tonight will be the night that I will fall for you, over agaaain!
Don't make me change my mind"

Daeron sings as you hold Lya in your arms dancing into the night, ignoring the stares of the Volantene around you.

Which are sometimes bittersweet. More so with DP's decision due to the thread's uproar about IRL songs being a great suspension of disbelief.

DragonParadox said:
"Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts"

Daeron sings as his tears falls before the sight of the burnt docks.

And of course his last words...
DragonParadox said:
"At least it's not bloody wildfir-!"

The whole Daeron discussion is so hilarious I almost want to write someone with that name in. :V

Eh. It's pretty much just empty bragging instead of the groundwork for a recruitment pitch.

Though kinda pointless to try for another vote now.
We're being vague now, to avoid giving away anything should Yrten be planning a double-cross. If recruitment is your goal, then let our coming actions speak louder than our words.

So disrespectful! DP spent days editing every single past update to remove him, and you just casually show off your archives?
Bah!

[And those quotes should have led back to a YouTube video when you click on the upper arrow to see the source. A rickroll never gets old when the topic is forgetting someone after all...]

Okay. Map version 5. Tell me what ya think.
@DragonParadox could you update the threadmark from version 4 to this one?
I think this looks fantastic and that you are doing God's job here.
Can't wait to see a final version of the map.

That aside, we'll need @DragonParadox's rule on where exactly Red Priests are building their oversized shrine to Asmodeus temple of Burny.

Get rid of the thread mark attached to V4 and put one on V5, unless for some bizarre reason DragonParadox wants to show the progression of the map being made.

Talon meant replace version 4 because there is always going to be an update, we never stop building, and there's no point moving the thread mark to each new post.

Just a reminder that DP cares and does the little things.

Update being edited.

Honestly, I slightly preferred "Update in beta"

:V

Yeah, it implies that you shove the whole thing into the beta's unwilling brain, force them to process it for you, and then rip the result back out. Much more interesting.

Part MMCCLXXVIII: Upon a Sea of Flame Part Eleven
Upon a Sea of Flame Part Eleven

Seventh Day of the Fifth Month 293 AC

"Well met, captain Sword-Sunder. I must admit, the Golden Wind is truly an impressive vessel. Rarely have I seen its equal." After all, you are not without your own skill at flattery, and from the way Yrten nods proudly as he instinctively polishes the smooth ebony railing to wipe away some imagined speck of dust or soot, it seems to have found its mark. Turning to the mage you add: "Greeting, Wisdom, we have not yet been introduced. I am known as Scalathrax Ashbringer."

Her bow is low and graceful, seemingly unburdened by the grimoire in her hand: "A honor to meet you. I am known as Siduri, weaver of enchantments and at need binder of fiends. My mastery of magic extends to the sixth circle, and neither am I helpless should battle draw close." So saying she draws forth a silvery weapon that seems half-way between a pick and an axe, a faint greenish grow racing up the metal as it is unveiled.

You respond to the offer with a tale of your own strength: "My retinue and I have just returned from translocating three Efreeti Turtle ships, captured by sword, spell, and claw less than an hour ago, to my realm far from the Plane of Fire. Although two were taken completely intact, I regret our enthusiasm was too great for the third to withstand. Still, I am certain my vassals are capable of salvaging something of worth from its broken keel." It is bragging, yes, but with a purpose. It would serve all here well if they knew enough not to attempt treachery. You would rather have the Golden Wind's aid, perhaps some day its service, over its broken shell and the bodies of its crew.

The crew seems suitably impressed, eyes widening and urgent whispers passing from one to the other. Yrten by contrast chuckles in his beard: "'Turtle ships...' I'll have to remember that one for the next time I fight the ash-sniffers. It'll be sure to rile'm up something fierce."

"What are the ships called by their masters?" Tyene asks curiously.

"'Shields of the Sultan,'" the Azer captain replies. "A lot of the things that come out of the City of Brass are 'of the Sultan' to account for some lickspittle looking for scraps of favor."

"For something called a 'shield' the damn things hit hard," Waymar interjects. "What weapons do you have here, captain?"

"Well now, we don't have the brass bastard's pockets, but we make due," Yrten replies. He motions for some of the others to descend into the lower decks.

Still wary of treachery, likely from knowing a pirate's mind too well, you decide to descend yourself, taking a more man-like form. Not precisely fitting to the prideful persona you sought to present, but then the very fact that you entered a town and paid for information likely put a dent in that image.

Below decks you see five light ballistas set on the sides and two heavy ones on the fore and aft, all wrought of ebony and brass. The bolts gathered beside them are all tipped with true silver, the better to pierce a devil's hide. Looking closer you spy arcane markings carved into the haft of a handful of the heavy bolts, the power of thunder bound to stone and metal. Enough to easily shatter the shields of even a formation of legion devils should it come to it...

"For lesser champions I can add my own enchantments to bolt and arrow," Siduri explains. "Though devils need no slumber they can be forced into it."

"You have no intention of boarding yourself, then?" you ask, recalling the boarding bridges you had seen on deck.

"Considering the rather unfair advantages baatezu have over the rest of us, I suspect they shall come to me whether I will it or no," the mage notes, a small grimace twisting her features at the thought. Able to defend herself or no, it is clear she disdains fighting face to face as much as her captain seems to appreciate it.

Ser Richard nods at the attitude, and were you not in the company of allies of dubious loyalty he would no doubt make some remark about how much easier his task would be if you followed that philosophy.

"Even if they ain't sleeping, this'll fix the damn devils," Yrten says as he holds up a vial of cloudy oil, glowing faintly as though a moonbeam had gotten lost within. To the second sight the vial seems to hold a much stronger enchantment than can usually be bound in such a form. "Aeon's Blood thrice distilled this is, powerful stuff. One hit from a weapon dipped in this and even a strong devil's gonna be sent back to Hell like as not. 'Course one hit's all I'd get, and I don't like the sound of 'like as not' when it comes to fighting their sorts. That's where you come in..." The implication to his words is clear. He has no reason to betray you because he is counting on you to fight and kill the more powerful devils, particularly if there should be more than one.

"Precisely what manner of fiends are you expecting?" Day asks from where she had been peering around the siege weapons, likely trying to figure out what they use for rope.

"Well there's bound to be some of them maggot boys..." Yrten begins.

"Orthons," Siduri interjects with the tone that bespeaks of great familiarity in clarifying her captain's more colorful descriptions.

"I heard told this ship uses Spined Devils for most of its scouting, though they've surely got something that can see through glamours and such. Can't see a devil worth its horns who wouldn't think of that."

"And who would their commander be?" you inquire, knowing full well how mighty the lords among the baatezu can be, especially when one does not have the luxury of bending all your strength against them.

"That, our sources didn't know," the mage admits. "Some sort of sage or oracle is all we were able to infer from how the ship turned around ambushes of less... well-prepared raiders."

"What about engines?" Ser Richard puts in laconically.

"They've shown hellfire belchers," Yrten replies. "The shit that comes out of those may look a little like fire, but it ain't nothing so clean. Burn the hide off a salamander it can."

Rina tenses at the mention of hellfire, though she struggles not to show her nervousness

For your part you are satisfied that the raiders are telling the truth and as far as you could tell holding nothing back. Thus you ask of their plan for the battle proper.

That answer is not precisely to your liking, though hardly unexpected. Yrten had planned for you to fly in first and use magic to get the devil's attention, then draw back feigning injury to pull the ship into the path of the Golden Wind, veiled by one of Siduri's spells. Once the foe is close enough the raider ship would unleash a hail of bolts and arrows upon the enemy decks before drawing alongside to board.

What do you reply?

[] Agree to the plan, you are far more resilient than you look in dragon shape

[] Propose a counter plan

They're sporting immunity-bypassing wildfire weaponry? Nice. That is going to make some fantastic research.
Hellfire Crossbow: Built from brass and bone, this crossbow lacks a drawstring. Instead, any devil that carries it can use a move action to focus the crossbow on a single target and let loose a stream of pure hellfire as a ranged touch attack. This energy appears as flame, but it has no energy type (and thus ignores resistances and immunities). A hellfire crossbow has a maximum range of 400 feet and no range increment. This weapon functions only in the hands of a baatezu. Other creatures are unable to focus the energy needed to spawn the bolt of energy from it.

At least it seems based on these.

Anyway, it seems like we are bearing a significant amount of the danger ourselves. Should we perhaps ask for a greater cut?

They wouldn't believe Viserys vulnerable unless they struck with so strong a spell that they were confident he actually WAS vulnerable. And moreover, even then, they have no business gallantly pursuing the wicked dragon, when they could just wait for their backup and go along their very important business protecting their cargo/VIPs.

That is awesome. Those are never going in the Larder, they are amazing weapons. Thank god we happen to have our own devils.
