Of Echoes and Reflections
Fourth Day of the Fourth Month 293 AC
Zherys had nodded in equanimity when you explained that you would offer the ritual to awaken petrified dragon eggs on the day of his ascension, and so he accepts your questions and critiques on the bare bones plan he had presented. It quickly becomes clear that while the plan is simple it is clearly not lacking.
The freedmen reinforcements are to float down the Rhoyne and debark near the Long Bridge, ready to march into the inner city, hopefully to cheers. In the meantime Mysterium mages would be split among lightning quick attacks on known conspirator ritual sites, with a larger but less experienced contingent providing arcane support for the Banners just as they had done during the long march up the Rhoyne. The High Speaker himself was to lead this company to balance out the lack of experience and protect against any greater fiends.
As you delicately bring up the fact that not all fiends that move that day may be begotten of the Pit, the magister seems almost ready to smirk with satisfaction were his character to allow such a gauche expression. "The mark on Elaena's soul has been expunged though the grace of the Meraxes-Who-Was-And-Shall-Be-Again," he explains. "It cost her a measure of her magic, of her very soul's fire, but in the end she lost less than she gained from the bargain and is content for it."
It feels odd to say the least to hear such things from another, to have to wonder what bargain Zherys made with the echo of divinity Dany had felt in the temple. For now you content yourself in asking where the priests are to be during the planned fighting.
"The Lady of Soldiers loves not the wars that pit brother against brother and forbids her priests from taking part in them. Fortunately the obligation to protect her holy places is even stricter, allowing them to protect the temple at need." Here Zherys pauses. "If all goes well they will provide succor to mind and body both once the battle is done. Otherwise..."
"You'll all be too dead to care?" Maelor jests lightly.
"Not quite," the Volantine sorcerer continues. "I have ensured that several acolytes are well away from the temple, with hidden cashes of lore near at hand. The same is true of those Mysterium sorcerers who do not yet have the strength of mind and magic for open battle."
"Where would they have gone, should it come to fleeing?" you ask curiously.
"The hinterlands to rally support among the slaves." The reply is slow, almost unwilling, and little wonder. Organizing a slave revolt is about the furthest thing from Zherys' goals and character. Seeing the surprised expressions around the table, even Teana's, he adds curtly: "I would see the Queen of Cities dead to a dagger in the heart before I allowed her to be defiled by the tanar'ri."
