It's Huge-sized and apparently blocks the entire tunnel. Resilient Sphere is unlikely to be large enough, and if it did succeed, we wouldn't be able to get around it.

You are speaking like if a dragon couldn't make his own tunnel or widen it

I don't think that stops it from using its gibbering attack on us. Resilient sphere does nothing to block sound. We had an entire conversation with the Nightmare Dragon through a Resilient Sphere.

It blocks the magic though. Otherwise we could simply RS ourselves and use suggestion from inside until we defeat everyone.

Also we auto succeed against the gibbering

Autosucceeding against the gibbering is a relief. But what does Resilient Sphere accomplish us? The way I see it, all it does is prolong a fight that doesn't have to be prolonged.

Can't we just burn it alive? Stay back and fill the tunnel with fire from our Fiery Burst until it runs out of hit points eventually?
This would be longer, but definitely would save on spell slots.

Is there even room in the tunnel for a sphere around the monster? It's irregularly shaped and presumably fills the entire tunnel wall to wall, so there shouldn't be enough space.

How would we widen the tunnel enough for a sphere? I'm having a hard time picturing it.

A sphere is all around (4pi) - so how does it work when someone is standing on a surface?

It fits like a cork in a bottle, a giant mass of flesh, eyes and mouths squeezed into a cylindrical shape by the surrounding stone.

[X] Goldfish

Voting for update. But I'll probably not see it today.

@Duesal , if the master is a Stonesinger I delegate my vote to you to capture and recruit it for Xor's musical band of horrors beyond the world

  • [X] Plan "Ant Lions, Dire Tigers, and...Gibbering Abominations?" Part 2
-[X] Dany transforms into a Mercury Dragon wyrmling so she can ride on Viserys' shoulder, then casts Detect Secret Doors. She will immediately warn Viserys if any hidden passages are detected.
-[X] Viserys quickly explains what he knows of the Gibbering Mouther blocking the tunnel, then asks Richard to guard the rear in case of ambush from behind. He casts Freezing Glance before advancing further into tunnel
--[X] Once the Gibbering Mouther is spotted, Viserys targets it with a Quickened Agonizing Elemental Fire Darts, uses Freezing Glance on it, then casts Baleful Polymorph to turn it into a turtle.
--[X] Once it is spotted, Dany casts Ice Slick in front of the Mouther, then prepares to use Alter Fortune if it resists Viserys' Baleful Polymorph.
--[X] If the Mouther resists all of our attempts to subdue it, Malarys hits it with one of his prepared combat spells or something he thinks will inhibit its movement.

Well, it's not the worst thing in the worst, but I doubt what Agonizing will do to a monster that is, by default, living every moment in mind-shattering pain, and what the prone effect from it or ice slick will do to something that's a giant blob of flesh that rolls around.

Complete waste of an Alter Fortune, too.

But oh well.

There's a rather good shot of this being a Beholder...

So standard adventurer plan for killing a Beholder is an Antimagic Field and then a Ranger pumping it full of arrows from a distance.

What's our plan when we have neither of those?

Uuh, guys? Am I the only one seeing the problem with polymorphing a roiling mass of flesh?

Yes it doesen't have any official shapechanger abilities, but the fluff has power in DP's universe (rightfully so).

I mean... if we can't polymorph it, then it's useless as loot.

DP wouldn't deprive us of LOOT, now would he?

If Viserys identified it IC, then DP would have had to give us that information beforehand along with the charactersheet.

Gibbering Abominations are specifically immune to additional pain and the effects it can cause. The advanced Gibbering Mouther DP linked, on the other hand, enjoys no such "benefit".

Mechanically, it should be vulnerable.

Yeah, so should the ice dragon be vulnerable to Freezing Glance.

It's still a creature that suffers unimaginable pain at every single moment.

And it also sounds like it can't go prone, at least it should be able to be tripped.
