Because sometimes being a warship means responding to a klingon task force. And sometimes it means responding to a solar-system eating space ameoba or a swarm of neural parsites. Science will not help the former, but it sure will help the latter.

Frankly, the only reason you could conceivably want anything else on a dedicated warship is because you want it to steal the five year mission profile out of spite. If so, go right on ahead.

We're not stealing anything. And for that matter the Constitution wasn't the only one doing five year missions.

It's gotta be labs and medicine, we already have dedicated logistics vessels and a shuttle-bay isn't gonna do a warship any good - she'll have a far easier time finding a post-war slot if she has dedicated labs
 
Expanding medical and science labs!

We've extended our logistics network so much I think improving our cargo is pointless. We have the Archers for that, let them so their job.

Also, having posted last night positing the potential of a 'torus primary hull', I've given it some more thought, and I've realized that such a primary hull design wouldn't be a bad shout for light, specialized ships. We may not take much out of the center, but that's still material taken out and weight saved for thrusters to push along and for faster build times. We may lose out on modules, but as long as the ship is specialized for its role, that's not going to matter quite as much. Sure, room layout gets a little trickier, and we'll have to move the bridge somewhere (maybe an outgrowth inside the ring, or on the top section of the rear? There are ways to make it work), but those aren't impossible tasks to overcome.

It's weird, certainly, but I think it's a hull design worth trying out at some point.
 
Honestly I myself am going to vote for cargo and medical.
I will attempt to keep this design focused on being a tactical beatstick and as ill-suited to being taken out of the Threat In Being role as is still possible, darn it.
I don't want this thing getting sent hither and thither and yon years from the Federation border, I want it at home giving any and all Klingon, Romulan, Orion, or Other parties that might decide to get frisky second, third, and fourth thoughts about doing so.

The Enterprise generically does them. Pike references it twice. (DIS/SNW), Kirk (TOS/Star Trek: Beyond), the last is pretty funny because he says things have gotten episodic, which is a nice reference.

TNG changes it to "continuing."

If you want a Watsonian explanation, ships often have tours of duty, and we can say in TOS, ships had a five year tour.

With how versatile this hull seems to be, I could see it going in the direction of the canon Miranda: multiple layouts (potentially branching into separate classes) for multiple mission-types. You could have a heavy patrol and defense cruiser while its cousin, fitted out with more science and engineering-focused modules, goes out and pokes around on exploratory missions.

Oh, but I do; I want the Klingons to find, no matter where they turn, we are there - watching them!
 
With how fast this ship is, medical would be a good idea in order to have first responder to medical emergencies in colonies. Medical is always useful for a combat ship, either for treating the crew's casualties in battle or receiving casualties from other ships after a fleet battle and, given the Connie is going to be the toughest thing and, in consequence, the one most most likely to survive, it only makes sense it would end up doing triage. Besides, with its speed, it would be able to send them to a proper hospital the fastest too.

Science would synergize with medical and would maybe help in letting Starfleet be more accepting of the Connie's price tag since it could do some surveys on the fed border while patrolling and chasing BoPs.

Cargo seems like a waste. I could understand the shuttlebay adjacent cargo, since it also offered some advantages to the shuttles along the cargo but it seems pointless here. This is a lean mean killing machine, let's just leave cargo to the Archers and civvie ships and let's focus on performance and added capabilities.

Extra shuttles seem like just adding engineering rating just to add more engineering rating. This is never going to be an engineering ship, just leave that to the Newtons and Archers, especially the Archers for their fleet of shuttles.

And, final argument: we gave Scotty a happy place in engineering, let's give ones to Spock and McCoy.

Also, I don't understand why people think photon torpedoes are stored with live warheads? because they aren't, that would be stupid. Antimatter is put into the torpedo right before it fires, preferably while it is already in the process of exiting the ship at speed. That crap is fail-deadly and you do not want that in storage if it's not absolutely neccessary. So yes, the cargo bay can and almost certainly would be storing several pallets of spare photon torpedoes for reloading (and if they need to tinker with one for any reason.)

For one, we already have a shuttle bay that can serve that purpose. It might be smaller than the shuttle bay optioned here, but it'll still be able to perform such duties admirably without needing to expand such a capability. For another, we don't need an engineering-heavy ship here. We have capable engineering ships already in the Newton and Archer classes, and trying to muscle in on their territory seems quite silly to me. Finally, the other modules I discussed in my post simply drew me more to them with their potential capabilities.

IMO, it's because shuttles are basically useless during combat (phasers are too accurate and shuttles too small to do anything helpful), so a shuttle-bay has to just get locked down during a fight and this ship - at least, during the war - will likely be on the prowl looking for as many fights as possible, hunting down enemy vessels and responding to distress calls with a 'vulture' soon to follow. If she's busy ferrying around passengers or cargo between starbases, she isn't on the frontline (and we just maxed out her fuel capacity, so she should be doing that for as long as possible, I'm guessing)

Medical is good to have on a front line warship, Science enables MAKE SHIT UP mode.

I mean, given how reliant she is on photons, being able to have a giant pile of the things in storage as reloads seems like it would support that better than some feelgood science labs, since if she shoots herself dry and has to run back to the nearest depot for more she ain't exactly going to be on the front line either.

After the Connie has fired Five. Hundred. Photon Torpedoes. There won't be any Klingons left within 20 light-years. It'll be perfectly safe to take a breather and reload.

Leave carco hauling to the Archer and Newtons. This makes it a solidish responder to weird problems and lets it handle the casualties this ship is unfortunately going to take.

Also this neatly gives spots to McCoy, Spock, and Scotty. 👀
