thats why, yes. "Womans are not supposed to be warriors" is a cultural thing.
Its rare, because most girls are not taught how to fight by their fathers. Even Stainarr did it in secret.

I'm aware, though Steinarr didn't actually keep it a secret. My point was more...we don't grab specific people and ask them to fight for us. Not usually anyway.

Then, we were just too good for our age group to make us stay home by others and it would have meant pissing off Steinarr.
And nobody would have liked an angry Steinarr at their door for breaking Halla because she is a better warrior than their boy...

This, however, is certainly true.

I would say Halla is pretty odd in that she has such a high campfire, most people don't bother to train it past the first level I guess. Steinarr had his at 3 I think for alloying.

Yeah. It's because we have Forgefire as an Alloy (and can thus be raised via Campfire) which is actually used a lot, which is likely an unusual situation for someone to be in, I think. Most people either don't care much about Forgefire or have it as a full Hugareida rather than an Alloy.

Oh yeah, I don't think it really fits for the irony thing, just musing in general on the topic.

And yes, that's one reason why I think that active trying to recruit people's daughters to become warriors would not be that well-received by our neighbours. If there were young women who wanted a new life of arms, it's not like we're that unapproachable. Although there might be factors which actually make this more difficult than we'd expect, like the feeling that they need to prove themselves as a warrior first before asking us - which is sort of a Catch 22 situation if no one is willing to give them opportunities.

We've accepted some pretty weak people on our crew, historically. We brought Aki along on combat missions when he was, like, 13 scrawny and blind...I feel like Halla's reputation is not that she demands warriors she fights with be excellent immediately.

Mhhh, the most ironic thing would be if like Trausti was trans and had just awkwardly been waiting for a social slot to announce that to her employer.

Given shapeshifting, I think trans people would mostly be in the form that matches their gender identity. So, like, Trausti or Vagn could be trans but they'd probably be trans men since they look male at a glance. They could also be women using that to impersonate men, but I'm dubious they'd be trans women since there's an easy transition option and they just...haven't. If one of our retainers were a trans woman, I'd expect that they wouldn't be waiting for Halla to initiate a social to transition, y'know?

One of them being a transman is possible, but not ironic. One of them being a woman in disguise would be ironic, so that's my current bet. Maybe Vagn?

Stigmar was also called out as ironic as a choice when I talked about two huskarls marrying and what that would mean for our Jarlsoul-in-Training count.

Maybe Stigmar isn't the Most Normal Norse Man, but is instead an exceptional (but less so than Halla) Norse woman in disguise?

The thing is, we know Stigmar's family, we grew up with Stigmar as the older brother of one of our best friends. The whole family would need to be in on it, it would have needed to start real early, and they'd need to be very good at keeping secrets indeed. It's not impossible, but it seems very unlikely.

I think it's more likely the rest of the example you used that was being referred to.

"While I was on the way to Gotland to scatter my father's ashes, we made a stop in Denmark to collect my sister and, while I was there, I happened to pick up a hold full of clay of both Healing and Resting varieties." You tap a foot against the ground as you look eyes with Baldvin, "I also have some information your father might find noteworthy, but I've already caught a few watchers and the information is sensitive. If you can arrange a private meeting, I can slip their eyes to get there."

"You'll be looking to sell those, I presume?" Baldvin hums at your nod, "I see. I will inform Father of this."

"I am, yes," so he can Eyetalk too, eh? Very interesting, Mister Baldvin, very interesting indeed.

"In that case," he points towards a side lodge, "when Father is done speaking with the King, he'll be waiting for you there. For the time being, however, I recommend you experience the rest of the town while Father and the King converse."

Thanking him for his assistance, you head off to do just that.

What do you do while waiting?

We want the shapecrafter, but that's not time sensitive and this probably is, thinking about it.

Honest question, is there a reason no one has brought up Stigmar maybe gay?

We have seen Stigmar take women off to have sex with them and both come back smiling. He got a Hugareida from some time spent with a potter's daughter in Wessex and has talked about that event. It's not impossible for him to be interested in men, but it's pretty clear he's interested in women as well if so.

This is definitely true, but I think it might be slightly more opaque to a local farmer's daughter than it would be to readers of the Quest. Our public image is going to be weighted more towards our more recent and more famous deeds - when we were stronger and tended to ship out with predominantly (not exclusively by any means) fairly strong warriors. There were some newbies we took along with us as well, absolutely, but I'm not sure that would be the immediate first impression, or what comes across most strongly through stories.

That being said, yeah, it's not like we've done anything to intentionally discourage people joining up, and we've generally lent a helping hand where possible.

I kinda want to see the local seer

We have a limited number of 'actions' here, I believe, and lots of access to a seer at home. This is our only opportunity to pick up these thralls, and there are no skalds at home and no shapecrafters we can trust...the seer would be interesting but other stuff takes priority.

True to some degree, but I suspect the weaker people who came with us definitely would have talked about doing so a lot, which likely makes it more well known. Like, that's definitely one of their most exciting life events, so I'd expect them to talk it up.

honestly, Halla has some of the best feats in the Hading valley and is one of its best warriors, being in upper top. even among peak warriors, its likely many of the warriors there never faced a Jotnar in a riddle game, Halla tends to have crazy adventures. so that could be rather intimidating for a simple farmer daughter who doesn't know Halla will likely have no problem taking her along.

we can encourage it more at the tournament next year maybe? and I still think Evyor should absolutely create an all girls warband, at somewhere more populated
