Looks like our hatred for Steelfathers is grounded from Blackhand bleeding over to us.
It also helps he wasn't an asshole from the get go.
Or that he didn't demand our cargo as a welcome gift, like some of the jarl steelfathers Blackhand mentioned.

This is all more or less what I expected, yeah. My impression of Blackhand was always that he was murderous and amoral with anyone he didn't know personally...I just also got the impression that he wasn't actually abusive with those he was close to. A somewhat different thing. The absentee parent thing definitely makes sense as well, though.

Like, the summation I always had in my head was something like 'good friend, bad enemy, shitty romantic partner since he often wasn't around, not someone you want to piss off'.
I mean, as far as the Norse go, he wasn't really that bad tbh. not great either, but there are certainly worse people

He thinks that enthralling people is wrong, but not the practice of slavery in of itself.
As in, brainwashing/beguiling them with speech tricks, so they think they want to do what you say, like when it came up in the story already?

Because that's how that bit came across, yeah. Not to mention that he said nothing about the normal thralls like Randi or at the English trip with the Thanes when the option was offered.

Sure. I did note that the vibe I got is that he was a good friend...not all of the Norse can say that, and most are pretty amoral with strangers.

He's expressed vague dislike of enthralling people mundanely as well, but it was fairly vague...and it's the enslavement process he objects to, not having a slave. Somewhat different.

I do not recall anything with the mundane version of enslavement, but then, my memory isn't the best.

His commentary on magical enslavement also applies to using thrall manacles and indeed mundane enslavement in general. Also, Halla muses to herself that he wouldn't like enslaving people after the Revenge Raid (followed up by noting that he isn't there and she can't bring herself to care).

Hey Halla,

1) Now that you have gotten Life-Bringer and Sunshine as kennings, what changes in yourself have you noted?
2) Do you know what, if any, gifts did Dorri, Framarr, Folkmarr and Logi give to Steinarr at his funeral?
3) Is all the Odr that you cultivate 'the same'? By that I mean like, is the Odr you get when you cultivate in your farm walls, under the ash tree and on your boat all the 'same'?

How do we convert our massive amounts of money into power?
Generosity buys Orth and Goodwill.
Use it to buy prestige and build alliances through gift-giving and generosity, and maintain a retinue of warriors with the best equipment. Wear lots of bling, and give lots of bling to our retinue as a social display of our wealth. This is the way that actual historical Jarls and powerful landowners used their wealth, and it's something we could be doing more of.
There was that other region that fought with the Hadingvalley and were heavy hit by the losses they sustained.
If we are still rich we could see If we can make gifts valuable to them, that attract new Life?
Though could be that Karl rich still isn't enough to make a dent in Jarl poor.
I know we got warned that imbuing crafting too much could be dangerous, but I'm hoping that either getting our craft skills to certain breakpoints of skill or certain odr investment will let us craft even more at once.

It feels like the main way we could really Improve our craft skills.
Last I knew it was a "prepare for the breakpoint or suffer" kind of thing.
We just didn't do the preparations, I think due to action/trainingdice economy, and then didn't pick it back Up.
Don't know if thats due to Discord knowledge or us just Thread-ADHD-ing.

Re:Ring discourse
Maybe we can create a max quality armring that makes wondrous quality armrings every year.
Like a lesser draupnir.

Or an armring with runes for crafting high quality armrings.
With boneash associated with smithing, productivity, or reproduction.
Imbued with the sensation of crafting a wondrous quality armrings.
He thinks that enthralling people is wrong, but not the practice of slavery in of itself.
Is that a believe in free/slave classes and disgust at taking someone from the free class and making them slave class?

For heir:
One of the Bloodlustless or the girl of the wolftwins.
And then hopefully get far away from the Norse Nanoha stuff.

Her being a viking-weeb with a possibly cursed Katana is just funnier, even if we could potentially make her a better type of sword. Especially when combined with her personality of being serious and reserved.

She's just such a good pick for being an edgy weeb.

Plus Bjorney!

Having a samurai sword and an intelligent bear companion really does have some powerful anime protagonist energies.

For me the next character should be either Sigurdr or Steinulfr, we already played a female protagonist so i would like to change things. Sigurdr with his Wanderlust would be great to explore the world and learn new things. While Steinulfr would be great to dive even deeper in Norse mysticism and more otherwordly adventures.

By the way, how old are our eldest children? 4-5?

In that case we should probably send all five of them to join the Varangian Guard at the same time
not sure we wanna send them all to the Guard. like, Asgier, and probably Evyor, sure. but Sigurdr might fare better by finding his own path, maybe apprenticing to a skald or exploring. the twins probably won't do as well there, they are likely to be more on the mystical side.

Im really interested in playing one of the twins. preferably Asgierr, since mysticism and Seidr are considered more of a woman thing. in fact, if we choose Steinulf it might be more like Halla then Asveig, as you would be breaking the gender steroetype- Halla becoming a female warrior, Steinulf by becoming a male seer or mystic

Counterpoint, the guard is going to give them all a lot of combat experience and Orthstirr which they almost certainly need.

Also Constantinople has Libraries* and Cool equipment and probably a bunch of dedicated combat training, which will be a lot better than an apprenticeship to some random Skald.

*which should have massive amounts of mystical lore along with every other subject by the way.

Im really not sure. and either way learning Norse mystics is likely better done in Norse lands. and they won't have much to do there, really. the guard is for warriors. like Evyor or Asgierr. less like the others

They're all going to be warriors to some extent or another, and whoever we're going to be playing especially is going to need some significant combat power to survive all the crazy stuff we want to do. (And a lot of the sane stuff as well)

while that is true, there are more sorts of prowess then skill with a weapon, and there is a difference between being a powerful combatant and being a warrior. Varangian guard is great for martial specced characters, but there is little reason for the twins to go there, except maybe for a short visit to the city(but thats not joining the guard) and either way there are better places for the twins to learn. I can't remember the chrononlogy but if they wanna learn wide secrets and mysticism then Alexandria might be best if the library still stands. or maybe the east(travelling to India in this world will be interesting). or just studying in the Norselands isn't bad, there is a lot of mysteries to learn and its most tied to their cultivation.

Sigurdr is likely to be a warrior, but he strikes me as too much of a free spirit too like being tied down to the guard. he is the kind to make his own path, dedicated training facilities or not.

This seems like a very weird attitude to take given the twins have Bloodlust, and especially given that violence is by far the quickest road to Orthstirr, which we're gonna need. All our kids are gonna be warriors. Like, not to the exclusion of other things, but then neither is Halla, and I don't think someone vastly less combat-focused than her is super likely, given our goals and the culture.

The only one of our kids I think might not be inclined to join the Varangian Guard is Hallbjorn, due to his more peaceful tendencies.

Sigurdr is likely to be a warrior, but he strikes me as too much of a free spirit too like being tied down to the guard. he is the kind to make his own path, dedicated training facilities or not.

The guard travels a fair bit, and isn't forever, I think joining the guard then going traveling more widely once he gets out is a pretty likely outcome for Sigurdr.

1. You feel generally happier than before. Only the currently used kenning has much in the way of effects on someone.
2. Myriad flowers, gold, silver, and gems.
3. It is your odr.
