>cobbling for centipedes

I vaguely recall that saying coming up before, but search gives me nothing. Anyone remembers from where it came from?

Probably something from when we made the spell. The basis for it is a whole lot of mini-skywalks working together to create a flat surface to travel across.

There is a Russian idiom "to shoe a flea" (meaning some impressive demonstration of skill) tracing its origins from a 19th century short story "Levsha" by Nikolai Leskov, so maybe "cobbling for centipedes" is an in-universe analogue?

A very impressive display of skill that also leaves you wondering why anyone would choose to display their skill like that?
Given one of the impressive parts of the Rite of Way was reducing Skywalk to its smallest possible form so it could be better cast en mass I could see where the move from shoeing a flea to Cobbling for Centipedes could come from.

It's a display of skill resulting in an impressively tiny spell, but with a much greater focus on craftsmanship in bulk than just making a single set.

Well, in the original story it was also an exercise in one-upmanship. English masters made a mechanical flea and Russian emperor ordered his best masters to do something more impressive. Three of them shod the flea, and Levsha told the emperor that each one etched his name on the horseshoes he made. When Tsar asked Levsha which horseshoe bears his name he answered "none of them" because his name was on nail heads.

Very pertinent to the quest and elven and human casting traditions - Levsha did this without knowing arithmetic.

Not sure why the Eike vote is so popular. It seems kind of out of nowhere to be honest. Was there a reason the thread wants to poke at her about gods, or is it just "we always like to do Eike social actions" and this one was available?

Poking at someone's religion is kind of a sensitive topic, even if it might be written so that Eike brings it up with Mathilde.

Yeah, we should instead poke at the ancient horror of the sea, who rains down death and despair at the first chance to sate her eternal hunger for vengeance, to see why she doesn't do that more often.

From what I understand, Mathilde's faith has been integral in keeping her soul's integrity despite ever increasing Uglu attunement. It's a big part of Mathilde's skillset and who she is in general and has saved our bacon many times.

It makes sense for Mathilde to share with Eike who seems intent on following Mathilde's footstep. Maybe Eike won't be interrested to follow Mathilde's example relative with her experiences with the divine, but we can at least make her a bit more aware as her mentor.

Eike is adorable. We're her mentor and one of the closest and most trustworthy people in her life. And we haven't had much of a chance to get into piety topics with her.

Yes, it's sensitive, but I honestly can't see a single reason why Eike wouldn't want to talk about it with Mathilde. Especially given that Ranald and Shallya are connected, and that the first ever serious thing Mathilde has revealed to Eike was showing kindness to Qrech, followed by a talk about happy side effects of the job of a Grey Wizard.

Faith and the role of gods in one's life is just another topic we can provide our perspective for Eike to hopefully learn something from, and get her perspective to understand her better. I see it as part of being her mentor.

For most wizards, faith isn't that important. The gods are up there doing god things, and wizards are down here doing wizard things, and as long as the wizard doesn't mess with the bad gods, then nothing more needs to be said. That's more or less the public stance of the Colleges in general (druids and the Bright's weird mystery cult thing notwithstanding).

But Mathilde has rejected that orthodoxy, and has instead cultivated a very personal relationship with one god in particular, and it has been a massive advantage to her as a wizard. Asarnil even said as much after the Kul encampment thing. I don't think it's wrong, as Eike's Master, to share that part of ourselves and highlight how a relationship with the divine can be of benefit—because it very much can, if the right gods take an interest.

In fact, ten year old Mathilde's reasoning for worshipping Ranald was:

"I can get a God to help me out just by doing the things I'm going to be doing anyway?"

Sharing that wisdom with our Apprentice is perfectly natural, and, in my opinion, incredibly interesting and I would like to read it. And I don't think religion is as private or as sensitive in the Warhammer world as it is in ours—it's just that we have a religious commandment to keep our faith hidden, and we mostly interact with people who don't have a faith, or it's such an integral part of their character that it doesn't need to be discussed.

Because I want to see her piety score, after all that is the thing you add to rolls against Chaos corruption.

I'm more curious why the Drucchi diplomats are so popular, we already poked at them once and mostly know their proposals. If we want to trade with them, it probably will be via a regular action.

I guess I can understand wanting to get a bit more insight on their culture considering how rare the chance for imperials to hold a civilized conversation with Drucchi. But considering their known duplicitous nature, I wonder how useful social mingling would be compared to just getting some kind of agreement rolling and looking at their actions rather than just words.
