I don't think this is wise, it doesn't work out narratively at all.

I mean, each to their own, I think leading our men brandishing a fifty-feet tall sword of flame and then bringing it down on their camp with the force of a thermobaric bomb would be really cool, honestly! Great way for us to show that we're worthy of being the leader here, and a pretty potent alpha strike.

I'm sure that the big baddie and all the dudes outside of Ground Zero will survive and counterattack, and that's fine, but it's a great way to introduce ourselves with a (literal) bang.

I'll allow it

Will it work like you hope? Maybe.

Will it result in a cool-ass scene? You can bet your tuchus on it

Honestly all I'm really wanting here for is the latter, so sounds good to me!

[X] Shock and Awesome
-[X[ Hit the enemy camp in a sudden assault.
-[X] Leading from the front, we charge the Flame-Tending Blade like a battle-brand to inspire our men.
-[X] Bring it down on their camp like Thor's hammer to start the fight, killing or wounding some, disorienting and disheartening the rest, and announcing our presence.

I just don't think it's a great idea to set the precedent of attacking forces being able to open up a fight with a Finale. Anything you do, NPCs can do, and I don't want to be on the receiving end of this in the future.

I suspect that Finales are obvious enough when charging that the enemy being targeted by them will always get a full turn to respond at a minimum. Hence 'cool scene' with a full turn of our troops spent defending us from the enemies desperate attacks while we charge up. Or, of course, the enemy responds with a finale of their own.

I mean, I could be wrong, but I don't think us choosing to do this will be a sort of retcon magic which introduces the concept of being able to do this into the setting. I think if Fister is saying "yes" to this at all, it's probably an indication that this sort of thing has always been something powerful fighters can do, at a cost, to make a really showy opening to a fight and inspire your allies. It's not actually that different to lobbing a bunch of Spark-Bombs at once, except it looks way cooler.

Objectively it might be better to keep our cards closer to our chest and not show off our big gun, but... we've had the big gun for ages now and never actually gotten to shoot it. Also more pertinently, we're leading a bunch of guys who are older than us, some of whom probably think they're better qualified than us to lead this expedition, so I think a big showy display is a good idea here.

I don't actually expect it will kill more than a handful of them, TBH, but that's fine, it's about presentation.

I'm actually potentially in for initiating combat with a finisher given IF's approval, but I want to scout them out first to know what the hell is going on. Plus to know where best to deploy it.

Hmmm, fair enough, I can get behind scouting now if we're going to do the big showy opening afterwards.

Plus it's actually letting Halla do even more Protagonist Shenanigans at risk to herself, and showing her men that she leads from the front and is daring and courageous (but also shrewd) so... yeah, fair enough.

[X] Scout it First (v2)

[X] Shock and Awesome

EDIT: Voting for both, as it was my plan and now someone else has voted for it, but happy to swap over later.

I don't want to start fights with a Finale.

Finales are for endings, not for beginnings. It just doesn't jibe with me at all.

So like.. Could the wolmanthing be Skoll the Hasty?

If he got someone to stitch the Frenzy Fast into him, and it was like, Frenzy 15, too much to bear. And then he had Moonless' bones..

I'm dubious. Because the people here implied this group has been here for a while, and it's not been that long since we saw Skoll. It's not completely impossible, but it's unlikely.

Quick reread..

My gods.

1.5 of this prophecy just relates to Halla. The remaining 0.5 is basically the Seer (Odin?) telling them to put us on this quest.

This isn't even a freaking prophecy at all, this is just Odin telling them to give us the damn quest to kill the monster. While hyping us up a lot.

So much hype.
Seems like it, doesn't it?

Is he nudging things so two storylines resolve themselves together?
Is he getting involved because he likes us and thinks us succeeding here helps in the war against the enemy?

Is he the monster we need to remove, and if we do it right we can just say "Yo, make like a tree and leaf!"?
Is the monster someone we can learn from?

Needs to be scouted.

He said we can do it, he didn't say it was a good idea. That's not approval. We can do a lot of things, and a lot of them are not great or good ideas to execute.

He said it'd be a cool scene, so I'm pretty sure the Nornir don't object and it won't be us just losing instantly. It might be a bad idea, but it's approval in the sense that it's not a bad idea for any meta or story reasons, only tactical ones.

-[X] Use a combination of mundane stealth and Hidden In Rags to sneak closer and get an idea of the situation, being prepared to retreat if there's trouble. Use Dead Air as needed and useful to enhance this.
Could you add on using Magnify-Sight Trick as needed to stretch our Owl's vision further? Since, if we're using magnify-sight and we're caught, we're caught further away, and have a better chance at escaping.

Owls have absurd eyesight already, but sure. I'm not sure if it works like that, but no reason not to give it a shot. EDIT: And added.

This stinks of Odin. Wonder why he would go out of his way to do something like this for us, though. Enemy shenanigans, perhaps?

So, analysis of the final crew we brought, in terms of, like, power level and available stuff (I posted a previous analysis, but that didn't include us, Abjorn, or our various other friends, just the list of recruits...that was more useful demographically, but less so tactically):

By the Valley Power Rankings, in our group, we have 1 person at Top, 5 at Lower Top, 14 at Upper Middle, 9 at Middle, 5 at Lower Middle, and 4 at Upper Bottom, for a total of 38 Norse warriors. For details, see Wavedancer's entry on the character sheet, which now has a 'Crew' listing.

14 have Hugareida noted for them. 15 if you assume Heima Smiles has one. This assumes Gordon Wiggles ability to make things bouncy is a Hugareida, which seems likely.
A total of 5 are Berserks (Us, Heima Smiles, Vagn Wheel-Drifter, Gorm Bloodlsick, and Bjorn Bjornsson)
4 are known to be dedicated archers (Alfe Arrow-Catcher, Stigr, Skalde Sharpshooter, and Ivor Thinbow)
4 have revealed Fylgja (Us, Abjorn, Barki and Randolf Well-Named)
4 are Giant-Blooded (Abjorn, Nokkvi, Tryggr, and Trausti), though there could be a couple more in theory, as Nokkvi being one wasn't mentioned in his crew entry
3 have more than one Hugareida listed (Us and our laundry list, plus Roar Shiningspear who has Fleinn and Light Hugareida, and Abjorn who has Leverage and Silhouette). If Eric has a second one other than Gale, he'd also qualify.

The following Hugareida are available in the group (not counting Halla for this...we know what she has):

2 are objects (Oar, Wheel)
2 are weapons (Fleinn, Shield)
2 are animals (Wolf, Deer)
5 are elemental (Gale x2, Ice, Light, Silhouette)
4 are conceptual (Leverage, Sleep, 'Walking', 'Bounciness')
1 is unknown (Whatever Heima Smiles has)

after seeing the average Norseman's Hugareida, Halla's list of like 7 Hugareida seems even more absurd. not even Steinarr has so many, as far as we know

a fitting heir to Hallr Blackhand!
hmm, about that...
hey Blackhand, do you remember how many Hugareida did you have in life? how many are common among powerful norse warriors, lets say Ironbrother tier

There is the Crew entry from the character sheet.

Top
Heima Smiles (Second-Grade Berserk) (Can become invisible or teleport – Sword, Shield, Paired Saxes, ??? Armor – Creepy guy with part of his face missing)

Lower Top
Halla Skyfire (Second-Grade Berserk) (Us. See chracter sheet)
Abjorn Bearbreaker (Our wonderful husband.Giant-Blooded. See character sheet)
Gabriel Blackstone (Squire of the 3rd Bead of the 4th Decade. See character sheet.)
Vagn Wheel-Drifter (First-Grade Berserk) (Wheel Hugareida, Generally Competent)
Nokkvi Good-Oars (Giant Blooded. Oar Hugareida, Can do the rowing work of four men, not especially social)

Upper Middle
Tryggr Broadteeth (Giant-Blooded, Gale Hugareida – Paired Saxes, Gambeson – Reckless and hedonistic, but loyal, works for Halla)
Trausti Pinchfinger (Giant-Blooded, Ice Hugareida – Large Axe, Gambeson – Tries to be a calming influence on his brother, also works for Halla)
Eric, Your Brother (Wind Hugareida, He is Your Brother)
Barki Bertholdsson (Fylgja Specialist, Folkmarr's Felag Member)
Fabvir the Fabulous (Deer Hugareida, Handsome, Vain)
Alf Arrow-Catcher (Another newcomer, good at bows)
Bjorn Bjornsson (First-Grade Berserk) (Kind of weird, talks in the third person)
Hakon Thunderclap (Youngest brother of Haklangr and Haleikr Underfoot)
Kare Ulfsson (Wolf Hugareida, unusually good at working in a group)
Njal the Tall (The tallest man in the entire Valley, but not Giant's Blooded, oddly enough)
Gorm Bloodslick (First-Grade Berserk) (A man with an unusually large amount of blood)
Roar Shiningspear (Fleinn Hugareida, Light Hugareida, has a good throwing arm)
Randolf Well-Named (A man with a shield hugareida and a wolf fylgja)
Oscar Sharphone (He made a name for himself by getting his Hone to an unusually fine edge)

Middle
Stigandr Safety-Bringer (Godly Luck, No Known Hugareida – Bow, Sword, other backup weapons, Gambeson – Joker and sincerely good friend)
Stigmar Kersson (No Known Hugareida – Sword, Shield, Mail Armor – Loyal retainer to Halla, Stigr's brother)
Jordan Slicksword (Halfdan's Son and Asva's Husband)
Bo Burisson (Rumored to be an actually decent person)
Trygve Ironoath (A man who has always kept his word, even when drunk and/or a small child)
Torgny Shocker (Another younger man in search orthstirr, unusually fleet-footed and in possession of a Storm Iron enhanced spear)
Gordon Wiggles (A man who can make things... bouncy?)
Arnfinn Heavystep (Barely 13, but... Good Gods, what do they feed people in this Valley?)
Skarde Sharpshooter (One of the better shots in the Valley)

Lower Middle
Sten Other-Sten (A guy named Sten who also happens to be a smith. He's not planning on accompanying you back to Asvir)
Halle the Hairless (A man... at least, you think they're a man. Has an unusually feminine face and overall slender appearance.)
Svend Sulsson (A young man in search of orthstirr)
Ivor Thinbow (He's an archer with a thinner-than-average bow)
Snorri Deepsleeper (Sleep Hugareida, a little lazy)

Upper Bottom
Audman Audsson (Audrikr's little... brother? Wait, he has a brother?)
Harold Hugehands (An average-sized guy with genuinely massive hands, good at shadow puppetry)
Selby Terrysson (Just a guy, unusually so, in fact)
Somerled Lungingwalk (He's got a 'walking hugareida', whatever that means)

Some of the people i think we should investigate during the journey: Audman Audsson (i want to know more abaout Audrik family), Selby Terrysson (he probably has some very esoteric Hugareida who makes him look "normal" to everyone else), Gordon Wiggles (i want to know more abaout his Hugareida), Arnfinn Heavystep (i want to know what his deal his, is he unusually powerful or just unusualy big?), Bo Burisson (want to know more abaout him and his family), Bjorn Bjornsson (i want to know what his deal is), Hakon Thunderclap (i want to know how his family is doing).

There are also a couple of people i think could be good to make connections and maybe turn in long term allies like Kare Ulfsson, Oscar Sharphone and Skarde Sharpshooter. They look like they have potential, and maybe if we play our cards right they could swear themselves to us.

I mean, it would be easier to try and have the youngest members of the crew swear to us. They are inexperienced and probably reckless, so we could use that. But i don't think manipulating teenagers in joining our retinue its a very Dreng thing to do.

Unrelated, but when we return we should dedicate a couple of social actions to Stigmar, Tryggr and Trausti. They are our retainers and i feel like we know too little abaout them. Maybe we could spar with them and get their character sheets?
