I've added a variant plan avoiding Shatter-Wrist Trick but otherwise pretty similar to my plan post under the following name:

I voted for both because I'm not actually that invested in one over the other.

It was stated that anything short of maiming could be healed fairly readily. He'll be fine by the time he heads out. The dick move is how painful it is, and it being a bit of a cheap shot, not that he won't fully recover.

The QM has made it clear we would not need to do this. I'm cool with a clean fight, but he'll heal and be fine either way. This is just fighting slightly dirty, not actually risking crippling him or anything.

We do not need to go to any lengths to win this battle. Even if Halla loses, it will be a valuable experience for her. I would even say that she is more likely to learn something in this case.

I mean, I give at least 50/50 odds that what we learn if we lose with the Good Clean Fight (and what our dad and/or Hallr tell us is the lesson is) is that we should've used all our advantages rather than holding back. Like, it's actually bad training to fight differently than you would in a real fight. It's believable because he's, y'know, our brother, but it honestly makes it much worse training for both of them.

Like, in real life you sometimes have to hold back to avoid injury, but holding back any more than that actively makes the training worse, and that's what we're doing here: Holding back more than necessary.

There's an argument that this is just a friendly spar and so we shouldn't take it seriously, and that argument is fair enough, but it's much worse for learning how to actually fight if we're pulling our punches so I don't buy any argument involving it being better for training. Better for our relationship with Eric? Very possible. Better training? Not a chance.

Therefore, in my opinion, an equal struggle of strength and skill is more appropriate here. In addition, Eric is not going to fight not so much, so I do not think that victory will teach her anything at all.

Also, relationships are important and complex, especially with a brother who is away for an unknown amount of time.

You don't gain experience 'combating an equal enemy' if you intentionally sandbag by not using your full skills. I suspect either victory or defeat will be equally instructive...but more so if she's actually trying her hardest.

As I said, I have no problem with this argument. Prioritizing the relationship over this spar as a whole is entirely reasonable. That just includes prioritizing the relationship over better training. Which is fine, it's a single spar so it's not gonna be the end-all be-all of our training no matter what, but it's sure as Hel not better combat training to avoid using a relevant tactic because it might make for hard feelings.

Which is to say, I'm fine with going Good Clean Fight (I did try to vote for both plans, remember), but its advantage is diplomatic and relationship-based, not being better training.

More to the point, it's better training, Halla's feeling a bit jealous, and it won't actually hurt him long-term in any sort of meaningful way.
 
...how? This is Viking Cultivator land. Maiming blows... just don't matter. They simply aren't significant enough to be a bad omen.
Still an injury as he leaves his home to start his own life in another village.

It doesn't need to be crippling for something to be a bad omen, like a black cat crossing the road or stepping on cracks.

Hell, Friday 13th is just a cultural baggage after a crusade that went wrong, iirc.

I'm pretty sure the injuries that determine who 'loses' are already gonna be worse than an injured wrist (they're halfway to knocking someone unconscious after all), just less specifically targeted.

I feel like the only bad omen here would be if we beat him even while we weren't trying our hardest. That might be rough.
