Haha what Cor-Dum, Hashut, and the Horned Rat are the fallen gods of Law? No wonder the Fire Dwarves hate their western kin so much.

Also secrets because it's such an important part of Grey Wizarding, and also because we finally have someone to share them with, but also religion because the key to being a really good Wizard is to have a God playing wingman (or wingwoman) for you.

To quote Mathilde the Younger:

"I can get a God to help me out just by doing the things I'm going to be doing anyway?"

I'm guessing this is more conventional, maybe even something her family/friends can attend.

[X] Secrets
What is a grey wizard? A miserable little pile of secrets.

[X] Blood (Sylvania)
A field trip to throw magic at monsters is less conventional , but it seemed to work out for the ducklings.

Cultural approaches, skills in spell and sword, the faith that one might hold... all of these have their place along the path of an aspiring Wizard.

...But come now, do we not already know the truest motivator of advancement among the practitioners of the Grey Wind? Well-intentioned mischief and well-deserved smugness, that's where all the real magic's at. Let's give the Apprentice a good taste of the world she's been freshly unleashed upon, start things off strong.

I would add Sotek to that lineup. I'm pretty sure he's not really an Old One, because the Slann didn't recognize him until the Skinks practically forced them to (and him being a direct creation of the Old Ones makes it more likely they would accept him as a God, he would be part of the Plan after all), he's the God of Snakes primarily and all other things have been tacked on, he has adopted the Lizardmen as his wards, and he has one hell of a grudge against the Horned Rat.

It would also explain why some Dwarves crossed the Great Ocean and went to Lustria - like Karag Dum suspected, they were followers of the Old Gods, having tracked down one of their teachers and deciding to follow him.

There's also a God of Snakes in the Nehekeran pantheon: Qu'aph the King Cobra, who lies in wait beneath the desert sands to ambush and kill lesser snakes—a God who's mere depiction on a coin invoked a sense of familiarity in Mathilde.

We now know that the dwarves traveled east—to become the fire dwarves—and west—to become the "mine of bearded skulls", and that their Old Gods followed them.

... Is Ranald a dwarf god?

I know that I'm probably wasting my vote but I would like to try it anyway. I posted about it before but:

Remember waaaaaaaay back in turn 18 when we were going to the K8P expedition? Well one of the last things we did before going into said expedition was exchanging something we had since character creation for a memento of our old boss:

You pack carefully, restricted by how much you can personally carry since your Shadowsteed cannot carry cargo. Your robes, your torc, your sword, and your revolver are all worn on your person. The enchanted box carrying the Liber Mortis goes into your pack along with the accumulated cash from near a decade of service and a flask of the liquid given off by your Mirrorcatch Box in case you get time to study it. A set of blank notebooks to record anything worth recording. Some light reading. Spare underthings. Spare powder and shot. And lastly but certainly not least the wolf pup, who balances himself atop it all and places his chin on your shoulder.

And after some thought, you put your usual grey hat you've been wearing since you were an apprentice on your desk, and put Abelhelm's leather hat atop your head.

So I was thinking… could we give Eike our old Hat? Silly, I know, but I think it would be a nice gesture and is not like we are using it anymore.

So with that in mind my vote is:

[X] Yes
[X] Other: Hat
'Give Eike your old hat from before you started using Abelhelm's hat.'

I think this would make the ceremony something far more personal between master and apprentice. It does not need to be a formal thing but it would be very symbolic as Mathilde is accepting Eike as someone that she can not only teach but who believes that one day can follow her footsteps.

Plus I want a mini-Mathilde.

You know, Borek's tale here answers more questions than just that of Karag Dum. Here's one Mathilde wondered on, during her visit to Uzkulak:
For whatever reason the Chaos Dwarves haven't decorated their birthplace in the same megalomanic style as the pictures you've seen of Zharr-Naggrund; most sources assumed that the operative parts of the Hold are below the ground level that guests are allowed in, but a few pass on rumours that the lower levels are sealed, and only opened to throw in someone that has particularly annoyed or displeased them. You wonder if it's true, and wonder what it would mean of a people that have such a desire to put distance between them and the place where they found their God.

So it looks like not walking into the mouth of the Chaos monstrosity was the right call and at the same time we got our answers, but there is another implication to all this no one brought up yet. There are still dawi in Dum, sane dawi that we can talk to. We can do that Gyro+Kurgan journey all the way to Dum, it being a lot easier to get that far without the giant armored dwarf contraptions. Who knows maybe they have Waystone lore, they certainly seem to have divine lore...

Actually wait a second, you know who would be really interested in this and has both the power and the courage to just fly right into the wastes to ask questions about the nature of the divine, Cython. We should ask if he wants to join us on a journey there. That would be even more straightforward than having to lie to the Kurgans.

What do you guys think?

Looks like Ranald and Ancient Widow are from that particular family of gods that were made before people started to make their own gods. Remember when he used us to apologize to her?

This is playing merry havoc with my Pantheon A/Pantheon B theory... Or maybe it's reinforcing it? I'm going to have to break out the string for this one.

Nor could I go down the path of the few Elders that still linger in Karag Dum, doing nothing but watching with hollow eyes and still tongues as their grandchildren go about their lives never knowing that their very souls have been reforged into weapons of spite against the Chaos Gods.

You know, I just realised that we are already familiar with a group of people who's souls have been reforged into weapons of spite against chaos—Wizards.

Is Cor-Dum teaching the dwarves sorcery?

We must praise Boney's benevolence in delivering us answers (I'd resigned myself to waiting years, literal IRL years) and his elegance in doing so (Borek+Axe is bloody obvious in hindsight, which is why it's great).

I'll defeinitely have to reread this update few times to get it. Or wait for @Codex post. My head hurts.
In the meantime:

[X] Other: Prank
The true Ranaldian option.

And once again, with regards to Gotri; "Sky-Thane" is such a badass title. Like, it's just so cool.

@Boney Does Gotri think of the title "Sky-Thane" as cool?

...(Idle musing about dwarven psychology; might not be worth going into but now I'm curious if Dwarves experience/measure/perceive 'cool' similarly to how humans do, or even at all)

---

Further musing (not a question); I wonder if Orki and Gotri get on well-ish considering their shared interest/focus on Gyrocopters, and how pleased Orki is with the expansion of the Dwarven air corps.
