It's just that they might be more likely to do it with a title, since there's still a difference between "moving my stash" and "adding someone else's stuff (that they often let me use in the past) to my stash and then moving it all". The second is considered theft, and while Cython might not respect local laws as much as everyone else, it's still impolite, and they don't strike me as someone who's that tactless.

If we're relying on Cython being tactful, then surely breaking an agreement made to become a Librarian would also be uncouth?

Couldn't an argument be made that by investing Cython into the well-being and operation of the library through an actual contract, they would become far less likely to simply abscond with it at some future point?

The agreement is less them working for us and more our library now being part of their hoard.

And Cython making off with the library doesn't seem likely to me either way. I'm just more concerned with losing control over the library we spent so much time and effort on.

Two things:

One—if Cython decides to take the library despite not being a librarian, we can't stop him
Two—why would he move? He's safe here, and so is his hoard.

Cython respects division of ownership - it explicitly partitioned the mountain with the dwarves, and it hasn't been thievish about Mathilde's books. So the Library's safety when the dragon migrates depends a lot on whether the dragon's been given an excuse to decide it owns the Library -- like by making it Librarian.

Cython's moved before. The Library, like the dragon, is supposed to be for the ages. If we're planning for the long term, we should give reasonable odds the dragon will one day move again.

How do you derive useful insight from an event that is over in a fraction of a second, is invisible to conventional senses, and is blinding to unconventional ones?

Sounds like Mathilde needs to invent something like how particle accelerators use to capture the moments of impact.

Also, this is yet another example of how one single roll fairly early on is still proving valuable beyond description. I'd honestly thought that all the other things were above and beyond, but now I'm starting to wonder if there even is a bottom of the abyss that is Vitae.

So, I'm viewing this as a way to help the we integrate a little with the community, as well as just plain helping out some orphans... but mainly, I do want more instances of the we working with the locals.

(and yes, I understand we probably don't want to go for this, but I also understand we probably won't have as much interaction with the we in general, and I kind of like using this as an opportunity to ensure that we will have reasons to periodically talk to them. They are a pretty cool addition in this quest, and I don't want them to just dissapear, although I understand we probably won't see them again for at least a year even in the best of circumstances)

So if Cython becomes Librarian, Mathilde needs it to commit in advance to leave all those lovely books behind, should it ever want to migrate elsewhere while the Karak yet stands.

Even humans don't like being told they can't move without leaving their treasures behind. And dragons are more possessive than humans.

We can just pay for everything to be copied. That way if Cython leaves everyone gets to keep at least 1 copy of each book.

I doubt he would just take the books, knowing that his hoard is safe in a Karak is something i suspect most dragons would wish for.

Mathilde is not an idiot, when she approaches Cython it will be in the frame of giving it an opportunity with certain future proofed caveats. If it decides those caveats are a deal killer... it can just not accept and Mathilde can move on to another option.

Alright, I hadn't wanted to do this, but I guess I'll approval vote The We. Knowing that we can set up teachers right now to do the Library Science Masters Degree and don't have to spend a bunch of personal AP handles my biggest criticism. I'm more fine with waiting for the grand opening, when the potential for The Undying Librarian Hive Mind is such a huge prize. I hope we take more social actions, because The We are still new at this whole civilization thing and also young enough to make mistakes because of how their instincts still interpret the world around them. It is a bit of a bummer that other races won't be as integrated into this library, since this We is going to be every employee unless it either value drifts away from caring about it or dies somehow.

You know, I don't really think we're going to get CF from the Orbs, because… well, they're just too big. Aside from initially providing enough magical firepower to level a small army—one Battle altar is a superweapon, eight is just disgusting—and even aside from the cultural value and appeal of finally replicating those unique thing, especially the ones outside her own Wind, Mathilde would also be providing the method to continue making more, as well as theoretical knowledge that could lead to other methods. It strikes me as something at least on the level of Queekish.

Honestly, it fits really well with the rest of Mathilde's gifts to the Colleges. Combined with the Windshrooms and the Rooms of Calamity, that's three different ways of increasing the College's long term forces. Eight every four years averages out to about one every sixth months. Imagine Supreme Patriarch quest or Emperor Quest being told they suddenly get a brand new Battle Altar every turn.

Why do we need an Ulgu Orb of Sorcery? We're not exactly planning on making a battle altar anytime soon. I'd rather give it to the colleges, not just because it's a source of College favour, but because it will be more useful to them than to us.
Why would we not want an Ulgu Orb of sorcery? you never know when you are going to need it and its a huge investment making a new one since we would need to make all 8.

It's not like the colleges are going to use them right away, it would just be stored same as the others, maybe they get more lax on their use since they are no longer relic tier, but whatever the case i say we keep one around, maybe push the limits of our enchanting using it as a power source.

Edit: Way i see it:
The Orbs are like a computer, yes you can fly to the moon without it, but you need a team and years of calculations, and it that same frame, most people can't afford computers even if they already exist, so their use is very controlled and limited.

So, even if you are not planning to go to the moon, there's a lot of stuff you can try with a computer that other people can't because its too expensive or there is a large queue to access it (Yes i had to run simulations for my thesis, why do you ask?), but suddenly that is not a problem and you can now afford to approach a lot of problems from a different angle.

To make it clear, i'm using the computer as an analogue because it seems part of the issue the Orbs solve is one of complexity, you can do a complicate array with powerstones, calculating their interactions among themselves and the environment, or you can plug in an Orb, or better yet, you can see an unsolvable problem that would requiere years of trial and error to even being to approach a solution, or you can merely have a masterwork difficulty problem when using an orb.
