[X] Cult of Verena

I think the Cult of Verena is really cool and I've been aching to see them in the quest. But beyond that, they really are the best choice out of all the options.

The primary mission statement of the library is to make knowledge accessible to all the goodly people of the world. Straight up, the Cult of Verena is the best option for that.

Beyond that, the goodwill with the Cult is so very beneficial to the library. The Cult controls more of the libraries and great libraries on the continent than any other organisation. They're a leviathan well of knowledge and getting in good would them would improve our library better than any other option on this basis alone.

Goodwill with the Cult also means we might be able to call upon the aid of divine casters who can do things like uncover the histories of items with a touch. They're also willing to provide martial aid on quests to seek knowledge.

Not a single group can do more for the benefit of our library than the Cult of Verena. Not the We, not Cython, not the locals. However decent they might be as staff, none fit the main reason for the Library's existence more, and none have ancillary benefits anywhere near as massive as the Verenans.

One powerful argument I think for the fanatical loyalty of the orphans is that it serves to lay the groundwork for something quite important. The exit strategy for The Big Book Of Evil.

Mathilde is only human and indeed is a human who lives a very dangerous life. The deepest bowels of an otherwise pretty mundane library staffed by people who are defined by their loyalty might be the safest place for it after we're gone. After all let's not pretend she or you has the will to actually destroy the damn thing.

Not necessarily.
While the box is currently unique, none of the ingredients are unique or even extremely rare, so more could be made. And while intentionally summoning Wisdom's Asps is against the Articles, I don't think giving Mirrorcatch Boxes to any Grey Wizard currently plagued by one is.
Sure, it was a 1 in 100 chance of the Wisdom's Asp but that will still crop up occasionally, and given the explanation from studying the box made it sound like a schrodinger's snake wasn't unlikely to have happened, landing that roll might have made it more likely for any future Wisdom's Asps to end up stuck in the same state instead of dead or alive.

It wasn't 1 in 100, it was the result of the QM poorly defining the possibility space and the result landing in the 1-in-100 gap that I left. It's effectively impossible to replicate without doing some hardcore Daemonology.

[X] Cython

There are few surer ways to make certain that a library will be protected going into perpetuity than giving an Emperor Dragon a stake in it.

Come hell or high water or all the armies of Chaos, that library will be protected - and with it, we can help forge a permanent agreement between King Belegar and Cython that will see K8P as a whole potentially gain a powerful protector.

I'm starting to get a bit stressed at how many Incredibly Important uses Vitae has. We only have one source of it, it produces very slowly, and we have no ways of meaningfully creating another source.

I think that should be our next direction of research, as finding new uses for it stops helping when you only have so much of it.

We could hand them to the elves for whatever reason, they can use all winds.
The wiki ways that the high elves can already create power stones of different and bigger sizes and combined with the fact that bony said that all human power stones are the same size, it seems likely that the orbs of sourcery are something special even for the high elves but knowing the heigh elves they will likely have quite quite a few already and giving them will just make them say thanks for returning something they have so kindly let the puny humans borrow.

So we're going for the massive flex, right?

Teclis couldn't find Vlag
Mathilde found flag and yoinked it out of the Aethyr.

Teclis made a set of orbs of Sorcery
Mathilde made two sets.

Etc, etc...

I think Boney said that it likely would have been a lot harder for Teclis to do so shortly after the storm as there was still so mutch ambient magic around, so while what Mathilde did was amazing it very likely does not put her on the level of Teclis, even just in her windsight aspect. Besides that it seems likely Teclis has made quite a few more than 2 or even 10 sets if a high elf is going to be giving away such a useful tool.

By the way Boney here are two questions:
  • Is there any way for us to replicate the warp snake trap and increase our vitae production that way? maybe even by providing traps for people which are bing haunted by the same kind of demon? or does that get to close to demonology to be safe/acceptable?
  • Second is there a possibility that now we know that power orbs can be increased this way to use that knowledge to find other ways to do it than sacrificing our limited supply of vitae, like trough directing a stream of way-stone filtered single wind power into a cosponsoring stone? or does it explicitly need to be primal wind/mana/power?
  • Finaly what is the difference between primal wind/mana/power of one wind and normal wind/mana/power of the same wind?

The exit strategy for the Liber Mortis does not involve random muggles, they might be trusted with it, but they would be able to get no use out of it so you might as well throw it off a cliff, unless one wants to argue that being trustworthy and being a good judge of character always come together which I submit is not the case.

[X] Collegiate
Will be a boon to any magical research, and will allow the Library become a seamless part of the larger Collegiate ecosystem.
[X] Cult of Verena
Will ensure the goodwill of the wider Cult, and will make a Library dedicated to sharing truth and knowledge.
[X] Runescribes Guild
Guarantees the proper organization and maintenance of the Library.

[X] Locals
Will more fully integrate the Library with the wider Karak, to the benefit of both.
[X] Halflings
Will be reliable, trustworthy, hardworking, and relatively incorruptible.
[X] Orphans
Will ensure staff that is fanatically loyal to you.

On the matter of normalizing The We: I for the life of me cannot find the update where there was that random guy visiting to talk to us about EIC stuff and he got directed to Wolf when he asked to find us...

But I feel like that update indicated that the locals have been doing pretty well already in terms of getting used to Weird Stuff. I mean, nobody seemed to bat an eye at directing this guy to Wolf, and uh, there was a game of ball where one team was a bunch of kids and the other team was Wolf and Johann's wolf-rats?

I feel like how difficult it would be for people to get used to Spider Librarians might be somewhat overstated in the thread so far.

[X] Cult of Verena
If we want to spread knowledge to other places these is the best option.
[X] Cython
I want a deeper relationship with Cython.
[x] Locals

The We are the better organizational librarians, Cython is better at making sure no one survives hurting the books and at acquiring more.

I don't think I can choose between them.

Gotta say I do not like the Orphans idea. Seems a easy route for infiltration.

As we all know, orphans are not be trusted.

That's some kind of joke right? You can't seriously saying anyone who's parents are dead is inherently less trustworthy.

KAU is built in a dwarf hold. It's already super safe. It doesn't need further protection, which is why we voted Order when designing the primary priority of the library. The Verenans are the best fit for that dedicated purpose and are also the best fit for it being a library at all, i.e. a place with books. Cython's personal book collection is nothing compared to what we can get from the Verenans.

The Liber Mortis already has a kickass exit strategy. It's called "being super safe in Belegar's deepest vaults, right next to our Vitae-box. Also we wrote instructions in our will, and Belegar is a good friend who will most likely follow them"

The Verenans are a powerful institution over which we have no hold, whom we have no relationship with and who institutionally distrust our patron god. It would take a lot of trust building for me personally to choose them

Ok so I see two possibilities for learning hardcore demonology that Boney said we need to replicate the snake of eternal suffering. The Kurgan, chaos worshippers who seem amicable to being bribed. Pro they seem amicable, the cons are long, violent, chaos worshippers, burn books, their alcohol sucks, etc

Now there is a group of demonologist that be more accessible but their in Araby. Similar problems as above but without the chaos worshippers.

We've already dedicated the entire foundational principle of the Library to Order. It's going to be a very functional and searchable library regardless of which precise librarians we put in charge - and Cython is per WoB going to acquire a staff of their own regardless.

The cult of Verena isn't about spreading or sharing knowledge though, its about preserving it.

While a doubt it will wow them any form of thanks or increase in Ulthuan's opinion of Mathilde and human mages in general is pretty good.

In fact we'd probably want them to see us in the most competent light we can get them to if they're going to find out that we're messing with Waystones.
