looking at the map most of the problems stemming from the route seem to be near kislev and if some break down its not that far

the other fact is that the wagons are redesigned boats so if they do go through the ice they might not sink instantly

I would not bet on that.

When you rip holes in a boat so you can stick a bunch of wheels on it it kinda stops being a boat.

[X] Frozen Sea

I'm legit so happy about that vote. Leaving with an active mystery is more palatable than the end of the quest.
Oh no, my eyes, they're rolling out of my head and onto the floor

Alright, if I'm not misunderstanding something, we'd have to traverse that goddamn disaster site again and we'd have to luck out immensely to not lose any of the wagons. So I'm thinking stick with the plan.
Both paths present pretty stern challenges.

1) We trade potential Kurgan, Iron Wolf and Fire Dwarf ambushes for Norscan and wild animal and (also) Fire Dwarves. The new path's dangers has lower troughs (they don't know we're coming) but higher peaks (if we're unlucky enough to run into an Icebreaker). In which case we traded horseman ambushers for the Ironclad's eviller cousins. With bigger cannons, mortars and rocket launchers.
2) The expedition believes the mountain passages are navigable, but they thought that about the last path, too.
3) We trade two weeks of hard riding for four in the new path, in an area with even less food.

Ok so if we take the ice route we can maybe hit the last hope inn The Last Hope which may be fun since it is a neutral place near the chaos wastes. Maybe a chance to buy loot or meet a future enemy/ally.
The Last Hope Inn is very vaguely defined as a location, but it's probably not on this route.

I've always seen it depicted as more north/north-west of Kislev. while we are coming from the North-east

Yes, they're redesigned boats, but also boats with dozens of holes for wheels.
I wouldn't bet on water-tightness. We'll be betting on Rite of Way and high summer sea-ice thickness

I would not bet on that.

I know but it might at least give them an extra minute maybe and thats if the dwarfs don't have some way of minimising what gaps and holes there are

That's 2-3 weeks for the 'original, across the pack ice' Frozen Sea route, and 4 weeks back the way we came, right?

Agree on this, if everything else was equal it would be more interesting to see new stuff.

If the Frozen Sea route is shorter, with a favourable supply situation we can probably afford some attrition, losing a wagon or two.

My feeling is 'subject to the Dolgan coming through, we go with the Frozen Sea.'
With the proviso that we might need to re-evaluate if we can't stock up on cows, see how we feel about our chances on the shorter route vs. stocking up at Uzkulak?
Yes, pack ice is shorter.

So, one thing about the Frozen Seas path: we maybe should go for all three Rite of Way actions while crossing the ice itself. Lack of AP for other things would be painful, but I think that entire stretch of the trip would qualify as 'difficult terrain'.
