I did the role for which one is the case when I started writing the Karak Vlag portion of the update.
So if we hadn't visited then there wouldn't have been an imminent danger to the expedition? That's... I don't know how to put it...

It's definitely not a freshly forming Chaos portal. It's something that's been powering up or working for ~185 years.
And apparently it was 9 options on a grid?

If Mathilde had died early on I would have pivoted to a new protagonist, but at this point it's definitely MathildeQuest and if she dies that's the end of it. I have the OP of the next quest already written and ready to go.
I hope it plays in the same continuity and with not too much of a time jump, so that many of the major human NPCs are still alive and active, even if our character purposefully starts on a path where he won't interact with any of them for quite a while.
 
On the whole, tagging on SV is something that needs a rework, and that rework is in the works to some degree as far as I know. In a more perfect world we could just steal AO3's tagging system, because it is legit good.

Yeah, the tagging rework is coming eventually, though right now Xon's still focussing on the QM moderation permissions thing.

I'm actually the main contributor on the tagging team from the council, so if you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see feel free to PM me - though you'll be happy to hear that SV is taking a lot of inspiration from AO3's system, and has even reached out to AO3's staff for advice and implementation examples.
 
A couple of months to a few years might not make that big of difference with what's going on, and I'd rather come back here with an army to deal with this if we could.

Besides. If we clear the pass and then don't go down it, whatever's down there knows it's been made anyway. I don't think giving it time to come up with a new plan is a good idea, either.
 
The thing is, if we go back to the expedition in order to concentrate forces... then what? Do we bring the rest of the expedition to the mountain, with those concentrated forces? Except, what if that just puts the rest of the expedition into the range of the trap or explosion range?

Or, as mentioned above... ... what happens if Borek just goes: "... Okay. Thanks for the warning. Now, we keep going."

Both of these are valid options to take, each with their own costs and benefits or risks and rewards. It's quite possible that whatever's going on at Vlag isn't actually aimed at the Expedition - it was started almost 2 centuries ago so likely wasn't originally intended for an event 2 centuries in the future, and whoever's behind it may not want to swap targets. It might instead be more of a danger to leave it be, and thus we should divert to deal with whatever's going on regardless of the risk of that backfiring.

There's no one objectively correct answer to the scenario Mathilde and the expedition are facing - or at least if there is it's not one that can be sussed out based on the limited amount of information available.

What I can say for sure is that if we act normally and then fill in the rest of the expedition that the rest of the expedition will be more prepared for whichever subsequent decision gets made - and I consider the time taken to pretend until Mathilde gets back (and the risk that who or what is behind this isn't fooled and gains the initiative) to be worth spending in order to gain that extra preparation and wariness.

Ultimately, there's no advantage in surrendering the element of surprise. Worst case scenario, the expedition has to turn back and we come back later with a bunch of magical experts and maybe a Runelord, along with getting advice straight from the top of the Colleges.

There's no reason for whoever is behind this to give up the ghost now when even the best magical experts tried to find something centuries ago and failed.
 
Cons: if the bad guys don't bite and instead wait and bid their time, Mathy will have egg on her face and people might not belive her.
While it doesn't seem to be a major consideration, this may not actually be true
IIRC we currently have the Protector face equipped whose exact wording is: "The Protector: When you act in a way that defends an individual or group from a danger that you did not cause, they will become aware of what you have done and will believe you acted selflessly in doing so."
And from the Dwarven boat rescue the the coin's effect extended to granting the Dwarves a vague understanding of the level of personal risk we took to save them, even though they weren't aware of the specifics of miscasts

As we are indeed acting to defend a group from danger we did not cause, the Dwarves will be aware of it
Even in the hypothetical (and very unlikely) scenario that the trap never springs due to us sounding the alarm and the perpetrator backing off, they would still be backing off due to our actions, ergo we would have defended them from a danger that would otherwise have occurred


I initially read Stand Your Ground as staying and poking it, but it isn't.

So, as Exemplarius isn't exactly bursting his way out of the mountainside to murder us at the moment, I'd rather bluff until we are close to the one we brought specifically for this kind of weight class issue and talk it out.

No you're mistaken, Stand Your Ground is the poke it option
Mathilde is going to call for backup, then if the mountainside hasn't done anything visible by the time they get here she's going to have them back her up while she pokes and prods until she gets to the bottom of this

She won't focus on investigating until everyone else gets there, because trying to see what's going on through that much stone (which is, after all, an excellent insulator) would take all her attention and would mean she won't be able to react as quickly if it starts doing something.

I'm not confidant in saying this expedition is prepared to tackle whatever this problem is. We should go back, and talk this out with the rest of the leadership and send some kind of message to Belegor. Or just keep in on the back burner until we get back. A couple of months to a few years might not make that big of difference with what's going on, and I'd rather come back here with an army to deal with this if we could.

Or it could be narrative casualty and we can interfere with what's going on with what we have on hand. But if that's the case, I'd still rather be doing this after talking to the other leaders of the expedition. Because we shouldn't forget that this isn't our expedition to solve this issue with Karak Vlag, and it would be rather embarrassing if we didn't even make it to the chaos wastes before being eaten by chaos gribbles.

Mathilde believes quite strongly that this is a hostile threat to the expedition, ergo treat it as if it is until otherwise proven

I can't dig through all of the comments right now, but has it been suggested that maybe we aren't the target? If we aren't the target for whatever is going on here, would it be worth the risk to what is clearly a long term plan to mess with us? I would think we should try to minimize the value of interfering with the expedition and then quickly move on.

In a fair fight Mathilde doesn't have the juice to fight this thing, but "chance to disrupt it" is her meat and potatoes. In my heart I know Mathilde would hip-throw a God.

In case the update didn't spell it out enough - the thing that (potentially) triggered Vlag to finally act with all their stored power wasn't Mathilde riding up to have a look, it was the Ancient Widow doing some high grade weather manipulation right outside to clear the path.

So as far as I can tell, there are two possibilities:
a) When the Ancient Widow did that, the Vlag entity decided that the time had finally come to make a move, and put together a ritual to dump all that badness on the expedition when it arrived. Said expedition is now a mile away.
b) The Vlag entity decided that the time was not yet right, and relied on the cognitohazardous properties of Vlag to keep it undisturbed as it continued channeling the power into a ritual to turn all of Kislev into fondant or whatever.

In case a), we can expect an extremely powerful magical attack on the expedition in a matter of minutes at worst, days at best.

In case b), then, well... the thing about rituals is that they're unwieldy as all heck. Even for a Lord of Change, suddenly switching gears with that much accumulated power isn't something you can do quickly or easily. So we'd be facing, at worst, " " "just" " " a Lord of Change without any special empowerment, and at best, a Lord of Change that's stuck trying to managing a centuries old ritual that's hanging at 99% completion and using up all his system resources while some fucker upsets his perfect keikaku by spilling dice all over the floor.

I'm not trying to forget it, I'm saying I'm not sure we'll be able to handle with what we have on hand with the expedition. Ideally I would just want to tackle whatever comes out of Vlag in response to our presence, then after the expedition come back with a proper throng to clean up the serious Chaos voodoo that's going on. I understand that's not likely going to happen. I still think that playing it normal, and going back to the expedition so everyone can get on the same page is our best move here. That's all I'm trying to say.

I don't trust Mathilde's poker face enough to bet the expedition on it, and taking our eyes off the enemy doom mountain seems like a poor idea. Also even if it isn't attacking right now, it might be planning on doing it on the way back. Forcing this ritual to go off before it is ready seems like a huge win for the forces of Order.
 
I am operating on the idea that this is a tzeentch plot, which would in my mind mean that the gig is up as soon as we realized something was wrong and asked a question we wouldn't have normally. In that case we need backup asap. Now it could not be a tzeentch plot, but all evidence(mind screwing, incredibly long planning time, time/space screwing) points towards it being so. Therefore I voted for standing as I think it gives us the highest chance of survival. Just my two cents
 
Time to poke and pray because this could either save or destroy this expedition and as long as what ever happened here stays uncountered it won't matter if we save dun we'll still need to evac them.

If it is a portal, the impassable pass being clear is kind of like opening the gates of your fortress, especially if there was a magical Ancient Widow side to the snows that keeps nastiness on the other side.

@CrimsonOddball I meant in the sense of looking deeper, but regardless, some backup while we zone out is probably the best.
 
I think we shouldn't let on that we noticed anything.

Quietly share it with the people that need to know. Don't rouse everyone to immediate action -- against something that may not do anything immediate in response (in which case, we just yelled at everybody and told them to come running, and then nothing happened).

So... I think playing things close to the chest, and retaining informational superiority (against this thing) is the best move.

It was Grey Wizard methods that revealed the weirdness to us in the first place. Let's go with Grey Wizard methods in how we respond to it; i.e. with subtlety and not letting on that we know, and keeping cover on this secret we just found out.
So as far as I can tell, there are two possibilities:

Is it possible that it noticed the Ancient Widow doing something, and then skeddadled, as it assumed something was about to happen and maybe the Kislevites were coming for Vlag? Except then, the Ancient Widow didn't do anything at Vlag, so... So it's going to creep back in and go "Ugh, they weren't after us in this place to begin with... bummer, I hit the alarm for potentially nothing. Oh well, at least they didn't notice us."

Or maybe they noticed the Ancient Widow doing stuff, and then decided: "Shit, hit the stealth fields, make sure they don't find anything if/when they get close to Vlag!"
