I really want to go for the powerstone rescue option, but I'm not sure I'm correctly grasping what the numbers/odds are looking like. My understanding is as follows:

The ship had ~600 dwarves, ~400 survived this long, and we just picked up ~300.

The powerstone allows us to mitigate the risk for heading into the sealed compartments and not exploding, but not the miscast risk when chain-casting them out. The big question is how often we roll for chain-casting. If it remains once per 100 I think the risk remains manageable as a single roll, but if it's per compartment or some other factor, then the risk greatly increases.
 
I haven't seen any indication of this. We've suffered three miscasts that hurt our sight, hearing, and strength, but if there was text that indicated any form of spiritual exhaustion I've missed it.

People really are conflating the two situations a bit much.

Mathilde is not doing physical labor: in fact, she is just flickering weightless in and out of shadow form.

Just because it's not caused by the touch of a God, doesn't mean it's not the same kind of strain.

And i don't think being strained from overusing Ulgu should be fixable by applying MOAR Ulgu.

1) if it's a soul thing manifesting as physical pain, we should probably avoid casting for a little while.
2) If it's our Muscles hurting due to a miscast (with Ulgu), we should probably not fix them with Ulgu as that will likely make it worse.

Does using the power stone consume the power stone?

I very much doubt that Dwarven law agrees with you on this.


Belegar's orders were clear.

"Our first priority is to make sure that nothing further happens to them. Second is answers. Third is vengeance. Understood?"

If we cannot save, we seek answers. Thus if we are following those orders, we should either save the rest of the Dawi on the ship or, if the risk is too high, seek the person who is ultimately responsible rather than the bandits for answers.

Not pushing our limits is making me nostalgic for that time when we were first clearing K8P just after murderizing the priests of Only Gork and decided to take it easy guarding the treasure room rather than risk a horrible fate, @BoneyM if that crosses Mathilde's internal monologue I would be very happy.

It's a miscast, but it's also a different effect than the one that overstresses the magical channels. It's like saying that the one that hit our eyes could impact our ability to smell.
 
Google tells me that black powder has a density of 1.72g/cm^3 and a barrel(unit) is 42 gallons which is presumably reflective of how much a typical barrel can hold. Putting those together gives us 273.5kg and further googling tells me gunpowder has an energy density of 11.3MJ/kg, for a total energy of 3.091GJ. Even after dividing by three to account for any inferiority in Warhammer-tech gunpowder that leaves 1.03 GJ, almost a quarter ton of TNT. Somehow I doubt even Dwarven designers overengineer their vessels to withstand that kind of energy especially on a civilian ship.

The issue is that Gunpowder deflagorating explosive, rather than a detonating one-- In short it's not a very good explosive for the purpose at all and is more suited for use in guns than as a stand alone or mining explosive (hence why it was never used much as such.) and with the energy being distributed in every direction at once surrounded by water and trying to shatter the keel of a Dwarven Armored Passenger Ship* that strikes me as an unlikely.

Nitroglycerin or some TNT could do it and the Warhammer universe might very well have its rough equivalent or the same but considering mementic dawi engineering I think we're looking at more than just a barrel packed full of gunpowder.

*Presumably a ship that is entrusted with the safe movement of dwarves would be well equipped in every manner the engineers could fit in

Edit: Gunpowder was actually used as a mining explosive and I accidentally implied it never was. It just wasn't used much and almost never after TNT (A more stable derivative of Nitroglycerine.) went into wide-scale use in industrial applications.

So if we shout a clear message ordering everyone to close their lights and clearly explain why they should do so, yet some scared Dwarf doesn't, gruesomely killing us right in front of him as we tried to do nothing other than rescuing the lives of him and his fellows, should he somehow survive anyway, would just he go Slayer or most of his immediate family as well?

Pretty sure Belegar would just strangle him on the spot.
 
First I would like to thank everyone that decided to take their time and replied to me. I think there is fundamental diffrence between what we understand from how exhausted mathilde is. You guys act and think like mathilde is going to drop dead from it any minute. Where as I take from boneym giving us the option at all that she is very tired but there is still some gas left in her tank to continue to do any of these options. Besides we are endurance animals and tracking is done right this minute but fighting is hours away. After a few hours of tracking them we should be good enough to summon our horse which we have mastered and there is nothing short of magic shenanigans that can escape from us once we do.



The "bandits" are nomore responsible for this than the muskets they used.
And no, it is not the most time sensitive, saving the Okral is, which i am not voting for because of the risks involved.
I do not think the robes remove existing exhaustion, could be wrong, either way, i am not comfortable hunting down bandits who may or may not have wizards of their own (as is one of the theories on how the ship was sunk), without ability to fall back to spellcasting.

First of all I dont understand how you can say that dwarves wont hold bandits responsible. That is such a wrong thing to say that I am very much dumbfounded. Even humans would want them all dead for endangering their friends and people essential for their knowledge. Dwarves are going to war for this and anyone even remotely responsible will have their homes razed to the ground.

Saving okral is important and one of the reasons I didnt advocate for is was also because of the danger. But how can you say that finding the ones responsible wont be important also suprises me. They are not humans they are dwarves and one of the most integral part of their identity is grudges. They have gone to fight people for pennies and disrespecting them. They have people becoming slayer for percieved not doing enough,in the story there was even an example told by belegar. So it is suprising that you dont think it is most important. For dawi their pride and grudge is more important than lives, for some more important than their race.

For exhaustion I thought we would catch our breath by the time any fight begins and you are right about robes. About a wizard in their midst though if it was true that is where our windsight would be most useful as there is no way we wont notice him. And please remember that we are lady magister now the cream of the crop. And we are a grey magister as well so our first act will not be busting doors but to get to spying. If we come to that there will probably further votes on how to proceed from there.

I might not reply for a couple ours because I am going to be afk. But when I come I definetly will.

Only if one of the three hundred other dwarves she just personally saved doesn't get to him first. And it would probably be better than what Kragg would do if he found out someone got the one human he actually respects killed because they were too afraid to listen.
 
Huh... Do we know whether Pall of Darkess would penetrate walls? It's not very useful here since Mathilde is blinded by it too. If we didn't delay the action to learn to see through, it would be nice workaround. It does not matter if light is there or not. If it's smothered, it's dark.

One more reason to not delay that action, I guess.

No, but Marienburg does have a surplus of money/resources and a surfeit of scruples - and Chaos Dwarfs (who do have the tech) are known for being willing to sell weapons to anybody who ponies up the cash (or slaves, but for someone with very little scruples that's just another form of cash). Admittedly, that's usually limited to mundane weapons and armor - but it's not implausible they'd be willing to sell a sea mine or torpedo if someone with enough dosh asked for a weapon capable of sinking/disabling a river monitor.

Especially if the buyer gets the "this weapon will be used to fuck over a ton of regular dwarfs" discount.

Where do the dwarves lie on intent vs. results in grudgemaking? Would the grudge be the same regardless whether the Dawi were saved, would the grudge be lessened by how many we saved, or would it be somewhere in between?

I have collected all the Word of Boneys on the subject to serve as a reference for people wondering about this.
How many passengers and crew were supposed to be on the ship in total?
Currently the best guess is 600ish.
Do we have a count of how many Dwarves escaped to the shores initially?
Very few, no more than twenty or so.
- Current headcount: 300-400 rescued, including KaK Metalsmiths Guildmaster.
- Roll for number of survivors was made here and here.
If every sealed room was filled to standing room only, that could represent as many as fifty or more, but if there's at most one or two in each, less than a dozen.
So: 2/3 of the ship's complement, about 400 dwarves, survived, though only about twenty made it to shore. We then rescued somewhere north of 300 more. This matches Mathilde's estimate: if every sealed room was filled, that could represent around fifty more dwarves. If those dwarves are in good shape and made it to compartments that water did not enter, then they have a good shot at surviving for Barak Varr's rescue. If those dwarves are wounded and/or chest-deep in water, they will probably not survive.

Enchant, not in a useful timescale. If you meant cast, it wouldn't penetrate the metal.
 
Funny thought, but it was mentioned how the dwarves coming out of SoS would look like they just teleported into place, right? But we did just learn that SoS works by sorta-kind-of sending things to the Ulgu border realm that houses the Grey College. So I have to wonder, what would it look like from the other side? Just a line of dwarves kinda floating through space with a new one being added or removed every few seconds?

Some people suppose it could've been Battle Magic. I doubt it, because of sheer amount of magical power involved. With her Windsight, Mathilde, most likely, would've noticed that already.
For example: "Conflagration of Doom", most potent/powerful Aqshy (Fire) Not Battle Magic spell from FRPG 2 ed. "As this is such a violent and powerful conjuration, all Wizards within a 5-mile radius are aware of the disturbance in the Aethyr that this spell causes". That mean, Battle Magic even more noticeable. Since Mathilde comes here after only a few hours, she'd, most likely, notice a traces...
Although, when I wrote it I figure Chamon from the ship might conceal Chamon from the spell. So, if that's been Chamon BM, it would be possible for Math to miss it, since she didn't look for that.

Also, I'm very sad because miss the page 6969. And no one mention it, even!
