Just get to shore, and trust the rest to dwarven engineering in the morning. I don't want Mathilde to come back after one casting too many and have Belegar stare blankly at her and say "...do I know you?"

Small note. That is not how forgettable works, it does not edit you from reality, it makes your likeness hard to recall. Mathilde would still be the only wizard dressed in grey around.

Any approaching greenskins could present a much greater threat to many more lives, and discovering the instigator of this attack and ensuring the Grudge is levelled against the correct party could have geopolitical ramifications that could affect, or even end, thousands of lives.
We can save the most lives by leaving the rest of the S&R to the dwarves.

Aversion therapy. I am allergic to using consumables. But if I do it enough times, I can get used to the pain, right?

On has to know her limits - and Mathilde needs something less strenuous than mass casting right now.

Do not go full Sunscryer. Never go full Sunscryer.

I believe the point is to remove the risk of getting splinched, so Mathilde is 'merely' dealing with the risk of miscasting an overcharged Illusion and then however many Substance of Shadow she'd need to get any dwarves that can still respond, rather than run the risk of splinching on top of the miscast risk, and needing more casts to get all the rooms. Anyone who can't answer gets Triaged - Mathilde literally does not have a shred of effort left.

Less rolls, but still quite a bit of them.
There is every likelihood that these, highly traditional and conservative, Dwarfs will ignore a disembodied command to plunge themselves into pitch darkness. The option does not remove the chance of death by fusion, merely reduces it by an unknown amount.

I don't see how this reduces our odds of a miscast. All it does is make us getting splinched less likely. In fact, I would wager that it increases the chance of a miscast considerably by trying to cast a massive boosted spell when exhausted.

I think I'm sticking with searching the shoreline here.

Sacrificing the power stone is a piece of a good solution, but it's one piece of a good solution. With the state Mathilde is described as being in, I'd much rather have a solution that avoids Substance of Shadow entirely, and the only people likely to have that are Barak Varr.

Hey guys remember the last time we were this exhausted? It was after the MorkGork ride & killing that warboss and we decided to chill on top of the mountain when many more lives were at risk in the battle below.

The dangers before were very heavily revolving around the fact that not only could we miscast but every single room was a roll of the dice to die to substance of shadow being knocked off line by a working light and us suddenly exploding partway in a metal wall.

With the power stone that'sgone.
Hey congrats now your 44% shit goes wrong chance (any of 2x d100s less than 25, though technically speaking we don't know the threshold for the SoS splinching, only that a 1 was instadeath with no save) is now only a 25% miscast chance (1x d100 less than 25). And that's not considering the powerstone boosting cast either.

Note that the MorkGork adventure we were rolling for miscasts on lesser & simple magics!

The powerstone isn't to reduce miscasts. It's to prevent being instagibbed by running into a lightsource and having the spell removed. The miscast chance is on top of that.

We have been expended as far as magic goes. Lives may be in the balance, but we need to know when to hand off to other rescuers. Magic should not be treated like something you can just grit your teeth and tough out. Simply having more power on hand doesn't help enough when the weak link is the spongy brainmeats that have to orchestrate it all. Dwarfs would understand a mining Grandmaster saying that an excavation attempt to rescue trapped miners would be too risky, they'll understand it when a "Grandmaster" wizard tells them we're passed all safe limits.

Barak Varr will hopefully have some answers, or at least some ways to keep everyone alive until we can make a second attempt.

The power stone makes saving them significantly less suicidal, but it's still pretty much guaranteed to permanently warp Mathilde from sheer number of castings while magically exhausted. While her robes will help with the physical exhaustion, they won't keep her able to safely cast indefinitely.

Yes, and the dangers before were NOT compounded by Mathilde being exhausted from chain-casting the same spell 300 times.

Now there is a new, entirely different danger, namely that Mathilde will garble her 328th casting of the "Fiendishly Complex" spell Substance of Shadow.

Do not fixate so strongly on one danger that you ignore all other potential dangers. We have found a way to probably eliminate one danger (assuming the dwarves listen and extinguish their only light source while trapped in the darkness like this).

We have not found a way to eliminate the other danger. And it is slowly but surely growing with every successive casting.

I mean, I'm not saying Belegar won't figure out who we are.

But I don't want Mathilde to go the rest of her life with a permanently forgotten face, either, relying on her giant hat so that people (friends, employers, lovers) even know who she is on sight.

On has to know her limits - and Mathilde needs something less strenuous than mass casting right now.

I don't get the reference.

Originally voted for using the powerstones, thinking that it was safe. Well, relatively safe. Seems like that was a bad impression, so I'm hopping over onto the other option.

I don't get the reference.

Risk/reward. How many lives can we save this way, that couldn't hold out for Barak Varr anyhow? Is it worth the risk, especially when considering that with each passing moment evidence we could use to find the culprit floats away down the river?
