On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Another reason, maybe the biggest reason at all, that her parents allowed it at all is because you're the girl's great grandfather through your brother Hroki,
I'm pretty sure you meant granduncle, not father. Unless there was some serious funny business.

You know what, yeah, lets have two of the little derps running around. Quadruple the derpitude and reasons for grumbling! More seriously if we're going to take two then I want one who is more methodical and has some talent for that style of thought and I want one who is more inclined to Go Out There, with There being any number of things. This way when they grow up these little ones (feels weird talking about a 25-30 year old being "little") one has an inclination to go towards the conservative side of thought and one the radical, as much as those distinctions exist right now, which isn't much. We haven't gone through crippling losses which cause us to regress to the state of end times dwarfs where its hyper-traditionalists clinging to what they can barely remember *of* Tradition on one side and then their slightly less Traditional opponents on the other. And then the absolutely insane loons off to one side.

Plus having Fjolla is kinda a no brainer for me since she's family, and women runesmiths are rare, so from a meta-story perspe tive I'd like to see more of them tooling about.

E: And! If we have an apprentice from each mindset it means we have connections to those groups in like 200 years when we're still kicking around and need something, or need help with whatever. And on the other side, they'll have common ground under us to draw on and thus won't necessarily drift apart, thus connecting the two ideologies.

I love the way you're characterizing elder dwarfs.

Now for another topic I have a question @soulcake: what does Snorri know about situations where a person uses multiple runed items, each item having a different set of three runes, and how the effects from each item interact with each other? Is there a form of interference, weird effects, etc etc?

This is background to an idea I have to make Runic Sets, sets of armor where each piece has its own unique group of runes and boon it provides and when worn together provide a benefit beyond the sum of their parts. If you've ever played the Diablo games, the way some armors were Armor Sets and provided greater benefits and boons the more pieces of the set you had, that's the root behind this idea.

An example would be: we create a pair of gauntlets inscribed with three runes that grant one benefit, make a pair of boots with three runes that give another distinct benefit, a breastplate that has another rune group and gives another benefit, and then the helm with like a Master Rune or another set of three. Put all these on and the intent and purposes of the various lesser benefits blend harmoniously to enhance each other significantly.

The point of such a technique is to kinda work around the Rule of Three, or at least proceed along a path tangential to it. Assuming of course what I'm descrubing is not a thing Runecraft already does normally :V

For reasons beyond the understanding of most, the rule of three doesn't care about the pieces of armour individually, only as a whole set. So you cant have 3 runes on the chestplate, 3 on the gauntlets, etc., etc. The runes take all parts of your panoply into consideration, which is a blessing since technically only the runed part of the armour has to survive to be salvageable but on the other, it stops true shenanigans. This ties into a bunch of fluff I've had to cook up about runelore that I'll be referring too eventually.

But, a runic combo on a talisman, weapon or banner that has synergistic effects with the armour IS possible. Think Runic combos writ large if you will.

TLDR: You can get a set bonus between the armour, the weapon, the talisman and the banner, but armour sets themselves aren't set bonus'd like in Diablo.

Is it possible to create items that have variably active runes? For example, an item that has seven runes inscribed on it, but can only ever have three of them active at once, with the wearer toggling them on and off as needed?

The rule of three cannot be denied*. A toggled rune that isn't on doesn't mean there is no power running through it, it just means the power isn't being used.

*No item or material known can contain the power of three runes.

Not entirely correct anvils of doom have more than three along with certain other items from the golden age. From memory there are certain pieces or armour and weapons that have five. I can't remember what but if you check out arch warhammer's video on dwarven runes that should tell you.

Rune Magic Just look at the runes on that first picture.

Figured that would be the case, but I felt it was worth asking anyway. Though on that topic, what actually counts as a 'single' item for this purpose? I'd assume that (as an example) a breastplate would count as one piece even its actually formed from multiple pieces of steel or gromril or whatever riveted or welded together, and an axe would be a single item even if it's forged/constructed from multiple parts, but how far does that go?

If its that picture of the sword with 5 runes, two of which are identical In all likelihood thats either
A. non canon
B. only three of those runes are active.

The rule of three cannot be denied*.
