Yeah, we want a diplomat, but definitely not that diplomat. I still get pissed off just thinking about that one.
*cough* sacrificing someone with MRs to Yss means transferring some of them into a snek *cough*

I actually hope we face her in actual combat one day, much as I hate recurring adversaries.

I dislike her, but not enough to want her dead. I'll be just as satisfied if she's vassalized and never again a problem.

Indeed, that'll solve a lot of problems. The issue was, IIRC, that the fey are little shits who might refuse what's by all accounts a reasonable demand on our part, so we're sitting here scratching our heads figuring out how to spin our demand to make them just take the deal.
Well the alternative solution which I will be providing to them very graciously, is that if any Fey is caught dealing falsely, they will be fed to Yss via funnel.

And stuffed with very spicy ingredients. For flavor.

That'd be perfectly fair, frankly. If they break the terms of our demands they're pretty much just enemies of mortalkind at that point, and we have guidelines for what we do there already.

I does kind of seem that we got royaly screwed over in that deal. They don't have there chosen killed, all of there hard work destroy if they get to dangerous, and are able to build up in pease with out boodraven shanking all of there effort. We got one front semi-closed so we can focus on the world ending threats. All the while said semi-closes front gets even more dandrous as time goes on, and we are trying to stomp out all of the wild fire form burning the world to cinders, are haveing the long night Rain down and freeze the world, and the rest of the planes.
We also get them helping against our mutual enemies, sure we might end up fighting them in the end, but until then they will be fighting Fiends, Illithids, evil Fey, and the occasional Otherkin.

So sure they are growing stronger, but in the process they are weakening some of our other enemies, and those enemies are bigger problems than they are.
What we really need is to figure out how to achieve a compromise. IIRC they want the ability to make deals with mortals, and we need to restrict those deals to make sure they aren't harmful -- anything less is a betrayal of our citizens who we swore to protect. We need to find a balance that they can accept. Beyond that there is a lot we can offer.

1. Sanctuary in the Imperium
2. As vassals they get protection just like anyone else
3. Access to the resources of the Imperium, including the Scholarum, or trade with the Djinn and the Shaitan via Sorcerer's Deep
4. Authority as governors of their own regions

Etc. You get the idea. We might be able to start small and request they send a diplomat -- a friendlier one this time -- not invested with the authority to make decisions on behalf of the Court of Stars but still able to communicate their desires. We really need to get them to the table to start negotiating, or we'll be dancing around them for ages.
Personally I would also as an alternative to them swearing fealty to us, accept them agreeing that nowhere on Planetos is part of their kingdom, if they can agree that their actual kingdom is limited to the Feywild, and they only get to come to the material as visitors, then that would be an acceptable outcome too.
Yes, implicitly, they think we're guilty. That's the point of conflict, and what we're going to press them over so that both sides are actually satisfied with each other's projected future behavior. If they're just milking this ceasefire to get stronger and not actually trying to determine if peace is possible, which we will press them on at some point, we call off the ceasefire. Because otherwise such a temporary pause in fighting doesn't benefit us at all.
We benefit from the ceasefire, they are using their growing strength to put out fires we would otherwise have to deal with, they are saving the lives of our future citizens, the question is if that benefit is enough by itself.
That could work, but bottomline we need to get a diplomat in front of us IC, because right now all we have is a few vague answers from DP OOC.

It's not all that reasonable a demand, if they were mainly situated in Westeros it would be, but they are primarily situated in the Feywild, sure they have outposts in Westeros, and are planning to expand into the Reach, but their realm is far more than that, an actually reasonable demand, would be that any Fey that wish to have influence in Westeros, must swear themselves to us, demanding the most powerful kingdom in the Feywild swear to us, isn't all that reasonable.

A smaller enemy taking our bigger enemies while becoming a bigger enemy is still a bigger enemy. You switched on for another. In all honesty we need to see what the fuck they want with this truce and go from there. it is also been a month. Hardly a big deal right now.

  • [X] Full disclosure, barring everything but Jeyne's name and her exact circumstances as those are not yours to share, both how far this threat might stretch and the fact that it would be tremendously difficult to prevent a wave of assassinations from what are ultimately disposable puppets with more potent poison than can be found above water--that distrust would sow strife in the ranks of men while their slaves found what remained easy pickings.

Part MMMXXXVI: Pledges Old and New
Pledges Old and New

Twenty-Second Day of the Tenth Month 293 AC

You make good on your word, explaining all you know bar Jeyne's precise name and circumstances which are not yours to share, making no attempt to hide how far the threat of these unknowing assassins might spread. "As far as they know nothing has happened, they are themselves fully without compulsion or mark, until the monsters reach for whatever remains of their true bodies, sealed behind aeons-old wards and legions of slave soldiers." You shake your head grimly. "When the time comes they will be little more than disposable puppets armed with poisons more potent than anything found on land, used up to sow fear and strife in the ranks of men until..."

"Until what?" Danelle asks, horrified. "What could call on such a monstrous show of power?"

"Invasion," Brandon's word cuts the air like a knife. From the Danelle's expression you know it had not come as a surprise to her either, though perhaps she did not wish to think it. "If it is indeed possible for men... or in this case dragons." He tilts his head towards you in respect at least if not liking. "Then we must assume they to have their own plans to remove that threat. The question now is who moves first with all sides veiling their hands." He taps his own ring of warding for emphasis.

"It's not perfect," the Chosen says more to herself than to you. "The maester, the boy, the maid, they were all discovered because they have this power unlike any common magic, it's an obvious sign, too obvious in the hands of those who do not know that they are agents or that they must keep it hidden, lest the hand of their masters show too early." An ugly, bitter laugh tears its way from her throat. "It looks like the fish-eyed bastards are going to make witch hunters out of all of us in the end."

It's the first time you have ever heard her curse. It makes her seem at once more human and more alone, the serenity of her calling deserting her for a moment.

"If we move before they do we might be able to recover the original bodies, or some of them at least and transfer the souls," Lya offers, faint hope and both of them know it as well as you, but better than none.

"Thank you for sharing this," Danelle says, running her fingers through her hair to keep herself from hitting something, you suspect. "If we find out anything more in this matter we will share it at once."

You nod and offer a smile of encouragement, restrained but sincere just the same, as you draw a sending stone from your cloak and set it upon the table in front of the Chosen. "This will help with that."

"I can... do it myself," she says, sounding more hesitant than dismissive.

"True, but you can also spare your prayers against more urgent need. One never knows how dire the circumstances might be," you reply simply.

Danelle nods and takes the stone as you expected, but what you had certainly not expected was what she then replies: "Should you be in need of aid against the enemies of all life, be they of the Farthest North, the depths of the sea, or the pits of Hell, call me and I will come to bring what aid I may."

"What she really means is call us, but this is the one place she's a stickler for protocol," the Lord of Greyshield interjects, a fond expression flickering upon his pale features.

"It's not about..." Danelle cuts herself off with a sigh. "As he says then, call us if you are in need of our aid."

"Thank you, I will keep your offer in mind," you answer in parting. More for what it represents than any desire to call upon it, but I will definitely not forget it.

What do you do next?

The thing is that they're encroaching heavily on Prime Material. They're not staying in the Feywild, and I highly doubt they'll accept being barred from Prime Material. They're here to stay, so we're approaching them with that in mind.

You've misunderstood. It is a reasonable demand, because what Crake and I were talking about was restricting the kinds of pacts that they're allowed to make with mortals. No tricking into enslavement, no manipulating into servitude through controlling circumstances, etc. We're talking about protecting our citizens from the whims of bored fey, like that one asshole Prince of the Court of Stars who was enslaving random smallfolk.

Seeing as how we use these occurrences to our own benefit, either obtaining sacrifices, materials, items, or other loot/XP, I would say that it isn't. We actually just lose out on opportunities to resolve these to our own liking, gather resources from the encounters, and strengthen a foe who as yet has not been determined to be amenable to peaceful resolution of the overarching conflict upon which the ceasefire was founded.

That's kind of surprising coming from you.

So Danelle and Brandon aren't dumb and are probably at least pretty perceptive. The only question is, like most people, and as Lanna pointed out, not able to decide if Viserys is always wearing a mask or if any front he presents is genuine.

But I noticed in this update and the previous one, is Viserys coming across as somewhat stand-offish? It's just that he was unusually forthright, at least as far as sharing accurate and detailed intelligence went, but was reticent about another earnest offer without strings attached rather than immediately making plans with them.

I would like a Danelle or Brandon interlude on that subject at some point, though it'd probably be best for after the Faith resolution so it doesn't give us the advantage of guessing too much about their opinions. We already have good guesses from what we've already traded with them in this update anyway. Brandon likes our power and what we use it for, and Danelle appreciates that we were restrained and rational.

But that's kind of different from what a person thinks when they say "Your Grace" and whether or not they're saying that because it's worth less than the air used to breathe it, or if they're considering what deference to us would entail.

Not like we have anything time-sensitive IC to do, I don't think-
I'll just have to edit it out of notes for next month's MAs.
