Omake: The Dark Lord Approaches (Canon)
The Dark Lord approaches

In the white and the cold, in the face of darkness, this army awaits.

Never in living memory, or even in the surviving texts from before Discord was such a diverse group of species described as fighting together, one alongside each other.

Never had this many gryphons, Yaks and Diamond Dogs come together to face a common threat. This could very well be the strongest army to ever be formed, and if stronger ever existed their every trace was lost to time.

And yet, it might still not be enough.

The Dark Lord approaches, mighty and terrible. His eyes are like fire, his heart knows no mercy.

He's a kinslayer, not a single member of his race spared from his fury.

He's a betrayer, enslaver of those who raised him from child to adult.

Virtue has no place in what remains of his soul.

He is, in many ways, worse than Discord himself, for even the Mad God never stooped so low as to deprive an entire people of their ability to even think. Even in the chaos he brought life was free to continue. To adapt and overcome. Sometimes even to thrive.

But not under this one.

In fact Discord would have never tolerated the young upstart, with his stolen power and delusion of grandeur. That much everyone would grant, even Discord had standards.

And so the the slaves march, their souls crying in despair behind the cold helmets, praying for a miracle to save them, to free them...to kill them if no other salvation was possible.

And so the soldiers stand, ready for the coming fight.

All over the continent nobody slept quietly that night.

If anything I would think if we could have veterans on the front line to hold it while Militia is right behind them ready to give the Vets a chance to fall back with pike lines 20 to 30 men deep they would do well. The enemy has mass numbers and will most likely attempt to charge forth in waves, let them break upon our veterans first so that the moral is strong while Militia cover their retreat once they tire. Mass pike, spears and other long impliments of death will be our shield and our swords should be the Yaks and Knights alike both held in the reserve with Yaks doing what Yaks do best in a charge deep into enemy ranks from the flanks. Knights should either be on the opposing side or be ready to charge forth as well to help the Yaks return back to the fold to rest up for another charge. Though we are not using shock and awe tactics the sheer might of a heavily armored and muscles knight or yak is king upon the ground.

That said we are an airbound race as well so I would image that our archers are able to easily stay afloat and continue to rain death until they require more ammo. They should also attempt to perch upon the mountain sides that overlook the pass as well to have a better aim at the enemy. Essentially I want the hills to be covered like the Persians did to the Spartans when they made their last stand. Cannon and Balista both are to prioritize the abominations of crystal as they appear large enough to warrant seige weaponry to break. The Magelord will of course be proirty if he shows his face, but I have the dreadful feeling he will not show his face when he as the numerical advatage as of yet. We must bleed his army enough to force him to show.

If I was to categorize this upcoming battle, it would essentially be Empire of Man with support from Ogre Mercs and Dawi support against Vampire Counts. Lots of massed units some few elites and the head of the whole thing, if he's smart he'll stay back, but if he's too proud and vain he could be baited with insults or enough damage.

Aside from that I don't' know what else we can really do aside from pray and write a ton of words, but honestly, I can't think of anything to write about because things have gotten so tense and real!

Remember Sombra is a master of fear, so most of his elite troops will likely cause it so having the militia at the front is likely to cause mass routing if we are unlucky

[X] Staged Front
-[X] Veterans to the Front: The militia are here to supplement your already existing forces, not take their place on the battlefield. You must project a strong front, and to that end the veterans of the regular army will be placed as the first line of defense, with the militia in reserve to reinforce any areas in trouble.
-[X] Rapid Response: Hold them back, keeping them in reserve to plug gaps in the line and respond to changing circumstances.
-[X] Surprise Charge: The Yaks shall hide behind the palisades or the artificial hills, revealing themselves and bursting out to charge the enemy when the time is right.

Do not just sit and let Sombra smash into our line, we must strike back.

Eh I'll throw in with Hold the Pass as well

X Hold the Pass

Holdthepassholdthepassholdthepassholddapassholdapassholpassholpassholpaholpa...holpa holpa... holpa!

Sorry couldn't resist.

The main problem with this is that the blizzard has mostly grounded our aerial units, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sombrero wasn't also the kind of infuriating bastard who can just make the wind blow hard enough to impale your army on its own wall of arrows.

[X] Plan Preserving the Professionals

[X] Militia to the Front: The militia, while spirited and numerous, are not as well-trained or well-equipped as your professional soldiers. Professional soldiers that you must husband as a precious resource. Placing the militia at the front of your lines will doubtless result in significant casualties among them, but it will mean less of your veteran soldiers will be placed in harms way, conserving your strength.

[X]
Links in a Chain: Scatter them individually throughout the frontline units, bolstering morale and ensuring discipline amongst the rank and file.

[X] Relief Charge: The Yaks shall be held in reserve, ready to reinforce a battered unit, shore up a flank, or cover a retreat or reorganization of the line.

This is more then anything going to be a battle of endurance we are fighting, that means we need to think about what happens as causalities mount. The first two options ensure that the militia last for as long as possible while they bleed the enemy and the veterans are fresh. The third is so when the militia fail they can prevent a break until fresh veterans can come in to close the gap.

Strategy is to hold as long as possible and having our veterans coming in when things get hard is much more preferable to relying on our militia to hold at the worst moments when things get rough.

Again in the Show not in this quest. In this Quest the Crystal Empire is going to be an Empire or else they would be a minor threat that can be broken in this war.
You know instead of guessing what it is why don't we simply capture couple Crystal Ponies ,take off their mind controling masks and ask them instead.

I'm pretty sure that they hate Sombra far more than we do and will tell us everything we need to know.

Problem is we don't know about the mind control masks. If we win this there might be some ponies too wounded for Sombra to mind control into fighting us whose masks we can take off, but until then we're stuck killing them.

Wonder if we could create a literal underground railroad with a few crystal pony survivors to funnel out civilians from the Crystal Empire. Something to think about after the battle.
