No, they shouldn't. They might be able to. Mathilde started Journeying with two Relatively Simple spells, and didn't fill out that section of her spell list until after becoming a Magister.

I feel this should be some kind of general notice to the thread: stop hoping/expecting/planning around All The Shinies, like figuring Journeymen "should" know lots of stuff or speculating about how the Journeymen might deal with the Skaven by picking up Battle Magic.
Should, as in "they should be able to pick up the spell on the way even if they don't already know it".
At least, based on our own experience with Relatively Simple spells. Furthermore, they know they are going to a warzone, and would have studied appropriately.

I sure hope the Jade Journeyman didn't join a war while packing only the beer spell for instance

Hopefully the journeymen have a few relevant spells as well since the colleges chose to send them. Jade healing pls.

One thing we should have them all doing is practicing their spotting and magelight marking so that some counterbattery style dispelling can be done. The golds especially we'll want building a rapport with the artillery.

@BoneyM does the jade water to beer spell make contaminated water safe to drink?

Honestly while I hope that they have access to their more useful spells what we really need them to be able to do is dispell.

While you're correct Mathilde didn't start with those spells without knowing how long they've journeyed it is hard to tell. Like the reason she didn't pick a lot of those spell until Magister is she spent her time being a spymaster, and learning more mundane method of combat.
Consider: Journeymen, during their Journeying, are banned from the Colleges. The Colleges are for Apprentices and Magisters.
Which makes me speculate that the Jade we picked up by visiting the Colleges is quite possibly a freshly-graduated ex-Apprentice, who has now journeyed for one week.
But I suppose we'll find out soon enough, as the vote is quite one-sided so far in favor of getting to know the other wizards.

I don't think this is the case. Consider that the flavor for Mathilde picking up those spells wasn't learning them on her own- it was sending off to the Colleges for appropriate reading and then reviewing the work. Since we won't have the ability to send to the Colleges on campaign the only study materials that the journeymen have to learn from is whatever they've brought with them- and I doubt they pre-ordered their full spell selections. Considering the high probability of losing whatever they bring to a terrible case of death, the Colleges might not have let them bring any.

Aside from that, journeymen are forbidden from returning to within quite a large radius of Altdorf during their period of journeying... yet we got these journeymen in Altdorf. That means that either they have some kind of exception to the rule or, more likely, were promoted to journeyman rank immediately prior to being sent off with us and have just left their apprenticeships. Otherwise they couldn't have been at the Colleges at all.

Actually, the Amber and one Gold Journeyman was already with the dwarfs when we got there. We can expect those to be experienced. We can also expect them to be bringing study materials for war-relevant spells unless their Masters were particularly harsh or negligent. A Journeyman's purpose is to journey and learn, and being unable to learn would quite defeat the purpose.

The two we picked up in Altdorf may indeed be fresh graduates, in which case unless they seriously pissed someone off at College, you can assume that they were sent for a reason.
Heck, maybe they were sent because they've been running around with greatswords and revolvers :p

Or maybe they were Journeyman who returned and barely failed to advance.

The March to Karak Eight Peaks - Week 1 - Setting Off
"The Dämmerlichtreiter comes. Angrund calls for aid."

"And the Karaks will answer. Assemble the clans!"

two more journeymen are enticed into joining
Keep in mind that, numerically at least, this is a 50% increase in our contingent.

Shit, we need to remake the robes. They're at half the power!
Having chainmail with a thought and platemail when given a moment to cast a spell seems fine to me. Better than having to spend a month re-doing the same enchantment on our robes.

Anyway, I really think we should vary up our socialize actions. Like say, meet the head of the Stirland forces, the halfling marshal who has helped us out before when no one expected it, and one third of our wizardmanling corps. I want to find out what the deal is with that halfling, guys.

An average of 77 over 6 rolls. Prepare for nat 1's for the entire war council and wizard crew as karma.

Also, one great thing about Mathilde getting magic 7 is that she can now stand in as the enemy battlemage in dispel practice.

As a sometimes DM I'm always morbidly curious when meeting new people if it's one of those cases where the DM has intricate backstories and well developed personalities prepared and isjust waiting for players to turn the right corner, or if he's sweating bullets wondering why the thread has fixated on these random one note dudes, he never planned to introduce.

While this is true, and I've argued the importance of them being sufficiently organized to do so at length... what we really want is spells that hinder pursuit, or sabotage delicate skaven war machines.

Because without any battle mages the best method for dispelling is to sabotage enemy artillery allowing your own free reign to shell the daylight out of the enemy casters when they pop their head out with only a few dispels rolls needed, and the second best is sufficient proximity you can make a minor alteration to their spell that produces a miscast, which avoids the poor odds inherent in complete battle mage tier spells vs Journeyman counter spells.

The two new ones are probably new Journeymen, but the three already at the camp when Mathilde arrived have almost certainly taken the time to gather the resources to prove useful on a lengthy campaign, and more importantly use it as a learning experience.

Technically they're only forbidden from entering their specific college building until their journey is complete otherwise Mathilde would've been breaking it on the numerous occasions she traveled to Altdorf on business.

Is there a reason Mathilde's Matrix is not in the spell list? Wanted to look what its mechanics are and how it is categorized, but I could not find it.
