This is rather interesting to read and I hope it doesn't die in it's infancy, that said, are there any malignant forces that aren't other griffon empires that would be a cause of alarm? Something that would guide the untamed wilds against us or is the world slowly reverting back to its normal basis and those things that used to creep in the dark need time to repopulate or come out of hiding? I ask because I don't think Discord would be all that enthused with competitors and would have done things to them.

On another note, why not have these Diamond Dogs work as miners in those new mines? They get a new home and get to dig to their heart's content, griffon folk don't have to be in a claustrophobic nightmare and the empire economy thrives! Seems like a win win to me.

A sauron expie and a magic eating centaur is what comes to mind for malignant forces, possibly Celestia and Luna, depending if their personality's are close to there cannon versions. As for anything else? It depends on what's gonna influence Questor. 'cause even if it's been awhile sense i've read anything on fimfiction. I know there's some authors out there that have created some insane monsters or races that i would have never even thought of.

And with us guarding the mines they don't have to worry about rival Diamond Dog tribes or trolls coming to kill them and take their treasure. Just have to make sure we treat them relatively well and not like expendable slaves or something. Then also alleviate any tension that arises between them and regular Griffon population.

Dragon Egg: It's a future person, one of extreme future power, which is naturally both full of risk and full of potential. Just, do what seems best at the time I'd say.

Diamond Dogs: Start with offering homes by/at/in the mines we've made, making sure not to displace any griffons crazy enough to actually want to be miners. See if any want to join the military in new units to use their old tactics on our enemies but better equipped, supplied and fed.

Then slowly work from there with integration until we've got diamond dog undercities here and there. No rushing it, they were desperate raiders and fully trusting them immediately is a bad thing.

We should definitely work on getting more of our neighbors on our side. Though priority probably ought to be cooling down any diamond dog related tensions.

Being a strategic genius doesn't help much when you paint the whole map enemy colors with your own pre-war actions.

Depends.

On the one claw, that genius will not find no help or allies. They will be hinder at every turn ranging from the petty and benign to outright violence and attacks from different military groups.

On the other claw, everyone is against you, so there's no need for diplomacy. Just fight and kill everyone who opposed you. Admittedly a terrible strategy but there are some people, both real and fictional, who make this policy work.

I'm personally involved because its an mlp empire quest. and i've read enough fics on fimfiction that mlp can be an extremely interesting setting if its fleshed out a bit more. Also i'm a lurker by trade. This is the first time i've participated in a quest like this. I usually just pop in, read, vote and then leave.

Nightmare Moon might cause a fair bit of problems, if only from the panic involved from discord-inspired flashbacks when the sun fails to rise. but that's decades if not centuries off.
Sombra has yet to make a move.. I assume that's the Sauron expie you mentioned, but that's kinda an insult to Sauron.
Discordian Remnants might be around. would not be surprised if discord randomly invested more power in some of his efforts to make them more premiant and last even without his power. just because it was random.

Name: Garrick Golden-Feather

Age: 32

Titles: King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the House of Gryphus

Description: At first glance, you seem like a pretty average example of the Griffon race. Head of an eagle, body of a winged lion, standing perhaps a hair taller than most other quadrupedal species. It's not until one looks closer that they see the things that distinguish you from a crowd. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. But you're no peacock, only known for your good looks; your talons are razor sharp, and though you are not as strong as your wife, you are still an apex predator, and your musculature reflects that. Your wife's workout regimen has also improved your physique, cords of taut muscle now visible across your body.

Military

Royal Army
: Professional soldiers, paid and supplied by you, though not particularly well. All have at least a brigandine for protection. 500 soldier battalions cost 100 gold each to raise or replace. Additionally, Royal Army soldiers have an upkeep cost of a hundred gold per every ten thousand soldiers.

Royal Army Morale: 50/100 (Average)

Royal Army Numbers: 10,000

-5000 Swords: Armed with a sword and shield, these Griffons make up the bulk of your army.

-2500 Spears: For keeping your enemy at arms length or taking down opponents larger than a Griffon.

-2500 Archers: Griffons with bows and some arrows. Not much else to say.

-5 Mobile Ballistae: Massively oversized mechanical bows that fire bolts big enough to pierce through tree trunks from vast distances.

Knightly Orders (Self Maintained): In the old Empire, Knightly Orders were typically made up of Griffons of noble birth who joined a fraternal militant organization dedicated to martial excellence, honor, and a number of various edicts of moral strength. These great warriors dedicated themselves to the Emperor and the protection of the common Gryph. Tragically, few of these brave souls survived the reign of Discord. But a new breed of Knights now seeks to serve as your sword and shield, and will rally to your banner whenever you may need them.

The Knights Lion
25 Imperial Knights (assigned as your bodyguards)

Navy: The vessels that guard your coastlines and patrol the oceans. Crewed by career sailors, they have an upkeep of five gold per ship, per year.

10 Cogs (Bolt-Throwers)

Auxiliaries: Auxiliary units are forces not part of a Knightly Order or the Royal Army that can be brought into battle alongside both of the former groups. They can be made up of allied nation units suborned to you, units drawn up from the militia, and mercenary outfits.

-The Valkyries: The mercenary band that your wife Gabriella was a part of in her wandering days. Contrary to what the name implies, it is not an entirely female unit, though the gender ratio is skewed a bit more in favor of the fairer sex. Specializing in rapid airborne assaults and furious charges, they're worth every bit of gold your Father-In-Law spent on them. (Numbers: 500). Cost: 0 (Cost paid by Federico Montefeathertro).

Wingbardy: 7/10 (Trusted)

Aquileia: 2/10 (Cold)

Persons of Interest

???: A friendly and strangely casual Griffon female you met at your inaugural ball. Despite having a wonderful evening chatting with her, you never got her name.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest Feathersian noble alive, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

I'll put that in the next Turn.
Oh idea! Can we get an action to get Gabriella some fancy weapons or armor? Seem like a gift she would enjoy, what woman doesn't like shiny things after all?

Plus it works very well as a "I'm sorry you had to spend the nine month bloated like a whale" gift. She doesn't seem like the kind of women that would be happy during her pregnancy.

Our biggest problem is likely to be other nations rather than one-off tyrants. Deer, Zebra, Minotaurs, Yaks*. Plenty of people who probably think that with Discord gone now is the time to Make [insert country] Great Again. By conquering their neighbours. And their neighbour's neighbours.

* Also centaurs, monkeys and satyrs assuming Tirek, Ahuizotl and Storm King aren't unique creatures.

Maybe but those nations have their own issues as well. The main one is the same as us no one knows what is around themselves. The world got shifted around all old maps are useless now.

I mean isn't the Storm King the same species as his soldiers? Just taller, lankier, and actually shows his face without a helmet/mask? I mean, both are humanoidish, both have three fingers on each hand, both have white fur covering a good portion of their body. So I assume he isn't unique since he is probably the same species as his army. Or at least closely related to them, like the pony tribes are to each other.

Omake: Kept in the Dark and Fed on...(Canon)
In regards to mushroom cultivation, I think the biggest shift for the griffins would be not so much finding which are good to eat but how to farm them. Assuming that MLP griffins are omnivores (though no doubt preferring meat) and that the setting is medieval, mushrooms would be part of the normal diet.

Kept in the dark and fed on...

While King Golden-Feather made sure to limit the amount of time Archimedes was allowed to present his research findings (to retain his and now his wife's sanity/not put the entire court asleep) in council, that just meant the under-sized academic had gotten very good at delivering large amount of information quickly.

"...still examining other potential sources, but currently we have finalized the farm design and completed test growth run of both Portobeako and Ovumtreatus fungi and can...."

There were also running bets among the councilors on the longest period of time he could continue talking on a subject before he had to inhale. Ravenburg had been making a mint off it.

"All this is....very nice, very through, councilor Archimedes." Interrupted Claus Rosewing, apparently trying to hide a headache from the sheer information overload that the researcher had been pouring out. "But how can any of this improve Griffonia? You've demonstrated that you can grow rot. What more?"

This blunt statement actually made the academic stop for a moment with a rather odd expression on his face. It seemed like he considered Rosewing to be saying the rough equivalent of 'what is the point of the written word' or something equally nonsensical.

"My good griffin, we eat them of course. As clearly outlined in my treatise 'Common Agaricomycetes species of Griff-' "

"On which I must remind you Archimedes, it is highly likely that none of the griffins present have ever seen this treatise, let alone read in full." interjected the king, bringing up an oft-repeated point. While Archimedes was one of (if not the) greatest minds in Griffin lands, he constantly overestimated how popular his various publications actually were among the laybirds.

"I-never-well, of course your majesty. If everyone may recall the hearty soup the kitchens served to us earlier today?" Seeing the nods he continued. "The nut-like flavor along with the strips of 'meat' present were in fact Ovumtreatus used in the recipe. Though uneducated griffins call them tree oysters. The two species I have grown have often been served as part of our meals, it is just until now they have been semi-rare additions gathered by claw from the wild."

Rosehip began to look more interested as he quickly flipped through his notes. "...So that's what you were up to. And I know for a fact that herd beasts will eat some of those things and others are used for treatments along with herbs. You said your 'farm' can produce mushrooms all year round?"

Archimedes puffed up his (admittedly small) chest in mild indignation. "Of course! Who do you take me for? While we are still ironing out small issues with growing the less commonly used species, producing food and animal fodder is child's play."

"Good. Meet me after the meeting so we can go over the details." As he said this, Rosehip turn to the king with a wide grin on his beak (and Garrick would swear he saw dancing gold coins in his advisor's eyes). "I'll have a report with the costs and benefits of building Archimedes's new creation written up for you by tomorrow, your Majesty."

AN: The two mushrooms Archimedes grew were the MLP versions (named by griffins here) of Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster) and the Pleurotus ostreatus (common/portobello). Both of these are dead simple to cultivate as long as you get the growing medium right (pasturized/cooked straw, the right logs etc). A constant and assured supply of fresh (albeit limited in type) foodstuffs during winter? That is huge in a medieval society.
