Hannibal at the other side of the gates
Hannibal remembered the first time his father had gone to war.
During the brief war between Griffonnia and Aquileia, his father, Hamilcar, had been a commander on the front lines of the Griffonian army, and had luckily returned home unscathed from the experience and retired, but his stories would stick with little Hannibal for years to come and influence his choice of profession.
Hannibal began to develop an interest in Martial prowess and strategy, his father had agreed to train him, teaching him to wield a sword, shoot a bow, strategy and logistics, and anything else that he thought would aid his son on his chosen path.
A few years later and Hannibal joined the military academy, and while in training the sergeant in charge took notice of Hannibals aptitude for strategy and warfare, and began training him for a command role along with the normal soldier training.
Then the winter war had started.
Hamilcar answered the call to arms and traveled south to the border with the local militia, given a command position due to his long and exemplary service in the Griffonian army, and Hannibal had been so excited to see him off, certain that he would return triumphant once more.
Sadly it was not to be.
When the army returned, though they were victorious, they suffered greatly, and among the fallen was his father Hamilcar.
Him and the other trainees were given a week of mourning, to return to their homes and be with their families after hearing the devastating news, and though he still felt an incredible rage towards the monster in the south, he could not deny that spending time with his mother and brothers helped lessen the pain at his fathers passing.
Later in the same year they were once again given time off, this time to witness the Imperial War Memorial, and Hannibal traveled there with his brothers, Mago and Hasdrubal, and before the name of his father, he had sworn to follow Hamilcars example, and protect the Empire from any outside threat, and also that he would destroy the monster in the south.
And now, here he was, commanding the army on the eastern walls, ready to face the Monster that was Sombra for the first, though certainly not the last time.
Remembering his vow to his father, Hannibal steeled his nerves and prepared for the fight of his life.
The defences had been checked, and then double, and then triple checked, his men had eaten a hearty meal not long ago, and stood ready to face the horror that would soon approach them, the order of the Knights Panther were ready to jump in at any moment, the artillery was armed and ready, there would be no turning back, nothing more that they could do to prepare, for the first wave could be seen approaching, meaning that the time for preparation was over and the true battle had started.
And Hannibal hoped that he would survive this battle, for he had a score to settle with the monster king, and the bloody toll he would reap upon that monster in this battle would not even come close to settling that score.
