The terrible war of Sun and Moon only ended when Gwyndlyn flew forth between them and begged for the sake of her brother's subjects that they make peace. When she swore only to fly when both Sun and Moon were in sky (and not during an eclipse) did they relent, and made tribute to her of six almost adequate gemstones* signifying the virtues of harmony.
To see her is to love her utterly and without condition, and for this reason she dwells in darkness and veils herself from her snout to the tip of her tail
I don't know whether to find this funny or heartrending...

You know... I had a thought.

If sombra needs to be personally here to lead his army, and if he is as single-minded as his tactics makes him seem then this might be his entire army.

It would be a real opportunity to send a long distance recon squad to his city to see what it is.

Also, we do know he is here right? He isn't secretly moving to flank us with his super heavies while we are preoccupied with the fodder right?
I'd suggested as such before, and I'm all for sending a small contingent

This is going to be a constant danger for the next several years. As in decades at least unless we get beaten here or we roll so well we somehow managed to kill Sombra.
unless we get really lucky i agree with"for the next several years"

I don't think there is much chance of this taking more than 2 decades at the very most though.

I'm ready to proven wrong of course

I doubt this will take more than two decades, just from looking at how far we progressed in half that many turns, we went from swords and bows to ballista to cannons and flamethrowers, I fully expect that with 20 turns we could make enough advancements to fully shutdown Sombra.

While that is true do remember we have yet to see the strengths that sombra brings with his magic and how powerful his magic is against our technology.

of course nothing stops Sombra from improving as well.

For example, he could enslave and improve a few dragons/Ursa Majors/add giant monster here.
Or modify the mind control spell in such a way as to keep his minions intelligent and capable of improving his tech and spell arsenal.
Or he could go for the never old "pact with the devil" option.
Or he could create some kind of cloning spell (like the mirror pool), and so obtain a potentially infinite number of minions/foot soldiers (and be then only constrained by his ability to arm them).
Or he could SOMEHOW ascend and become the dark equivalent of an alicorn.
Or he could try to replicate chaos magic (if that's even possible for any not Discord).

Or... and try to follow me...ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Wouldn't that be fun? :evil::rofl:

Questor, you're welcome for the ideas by the way (not that i think you needed them). I only ask that you use them in a horrifying fun way :p

Alicorn amulet sounds like the thing you are talking about.
i actually forgot about it. I was thinking more like..it seems to become an Alicorn you need one or more of these

1)Accomplish something unique with magic. Luna/Celestia raised the sun/moon by themselves while before it took groups of ponies (which, and i'm not sure if it's canon or fanon, lost their magic over time because of the strain), Twilight completed some destiny-changing spell, Cadance...used love to defeat a witch? I have never read that story, but i know a bit about it.

2)a magical artifact to jumpstart the transformation (elements of harmony for twilight (and probably Luna and Celestia), some kind of magical necklace for Cadence (after/while defeating/redeeming the witch).

3)Possibly representing a special quality/force (Celestia=sun/day, Luna=moon and stars/night/dreams, Cadance=love, Twilight=Friendship/magic)

Sombra has the crystal heart as an artifact, has DEFINITELY the potential to do something unique with his magic, and i'm sure there are more than a few possible titles for him (the Alicorn of shadows? of Domination? of...crystals?)

Who ever said Alicorns have to be nice? :p

Technically the entire species of changlings are alicorns

enslave and improve a few Ursa Majors
That would be an immediate game over. The end of that particular episode reveals that the Ursa they encountered (eight times Twilight's size) was an Ursa minor and at most a forth the size of their Ursa major parent.
That's about twice the size of a grown MLP dragon.

If you prefer it in terms of volume, over 30 000 ponies or eight dragons.

Another scenario on what Sombra could unleash:
the gates of Tartarus stand open and unguarded

depending on how much time it passes before he gets them, we might have enough cannons to help. Or something even better, who knows. Steam powered tanks? Greek fire? Poisons?

Another scenario on what Sombra could unleash:

I did say "pact with the devil". close enough:p

Really, coming up with possible power ups for Sombra is not that hard. I remember that in a fic he had dragons made of crystals.

Another two possibilities:
he mind-controls a changeling queen (and, through her, a whole hive depending on how/if hivemind works/is a thing here)
He gets the bloodstone scepter, and uses it to controls the dragons. ALL the dragons.

Guys, let's not make this too hard on ourselves... He'll probably just take our technology and hard counter them, leading to an arms race with one side having heavy material wealth and the other side with MAGIC!

Crack Omake: Gwyndlyn, The Eternally Beloved Regent, The Veiled Wyrm of Adoration

When griff and dog speak, in hushed and reverent whispers, of the emerald scales of Gwyndlyn they do not speak in simile or metaphor: her scales are perfect emerald gemstones, her teeth and talons diamond. It is said that the guilds of gem cutters and glassmakers have forbidden their members from looking upon her, although they proscribe no punishment for those that transgress; the inescapable shame at the inadequacy of their craft in comparison to her beauty is punishment enough.

To see her is to love her utterly and without condition, and for this reason she dwells in darkness and veils herself from her snout to the tip of her tail, that the empire does not waste away pining for her. It is said that in ancient days she decided to fly only under moonlight, that her radiance would not blind the world. But the Moon was so enraptured of Gwyndlyn's beauty that one night she tarried in the sky, and not knowing the passage of time Gwyndlyn was caught by the dawning rays of the sun. So enraged was the Sun that her sister had kept such beauty from her that she immediately went to war, declaring that day would reign eternal in order that she might never miss a chance to witness Gwyndlyn in flight.

* Gemsmiths and glassmakers that witness these gems can, with time and care, be rehabilitated to the point where they can look upon the product of their trade without needing to smash them to erase the pale mockery of what they have seen.

And so she has dwelt beneath the great palace of the Golden-Feathers, and has acted as chief adviser and first friend to that illustrious line. For fear of her disappointment none has risen against the line of her father, and for fear of saddening her no Golden-Feathers has ever knowingly passed an unjust law. On the few occasions where the line of Golden-Feathers has faltered, by illness or accident, she has ruled well and ably while the heir came of age, and retired gracefully after.

And so we give thanks again to Gwyndlyn, our eternal and beloved regent! Long may she live and keep us in her heart!
