There is going to be no easy victory. We are likely to war on our own territory for a few years before we force Sombra to withdraw. That will be it the Crystal Empire is still going to be intact and Sombra alive. He and us will build back up for another go until we get enough allies to take the fight to him. The southern expansion is locked out for now until we finally defeat Sombra.

I thought they were assuming everything was lost, but really they were speculating that we wouldn't be able to defeat Sombra in a single battle.
Rest assured, you'll need more than one bad roll to see your people destroyed. It's going to take at least two or three really, really bad rolls just to see the main character die. There is always a chance for victory.

to be fair I honestly would prefer sombra to be a recurring threat rather then a single one time epic battle not many quests do that.
Someone managed to claim their bonus for that action before me.
Look at Informational -> omake bonus tally, to see who is doing what.
And then we shall be the crystal empire!
… Sorta. Honestly if that happens we may need to start thinking about changing our name given how multi-species our empire is getting. I mean the diamond dogs are one things but if we add in the crystal ponies and maybe the Yaks too that four species, at that point the Empire of Gryphus is an artifact name even if a griffon still rules it.
How does everyone fell about the "Empire of the Free Peoples" since we are presenting ourselves as defending against being enslaved by dark forces.

No because no Empire has ever followed that kind of naming logic. It would also be very easy to insult other nations with that name. It implies that only we are free and the rest are enslaved or oppressed. Wether or not that is the case you do not bring it up. The Empire is named like that because the region it was formed from had that name. You didn't see Rome change its name when it expanded to other people, The British, Russians, Germans, French, and every other Empire doesn't change their name just because more people are added.
Even they didn't call themselves anything like the free peoples. It was always socialist republic, Democratic Republic, or anything else that makes them seem better. And that is only because republics and democracy actually managed to succeed in our world or else there would be no positive connotation to those words.

This is sort of the contingency plan I have in mind. I was going to suggest we move as much of our people and resources along with our children and some of our best people away from danger. Have the fleet and every ship we can get ready to load up our people and go into exile if we lose the war. They can run and one day return for the liberation of the Empire.Third Option: We could build a fleet and evacuate to Neighpon!
As for the name of our Empire, I would stick with Gryphus, like Rome
