Heres the thing though, hes coming whether we like it or now so we need to face him before he starts pillaging our towns and enslaving our people to fight against us or its just gonna go down from there.

If we want to blow up the army from below we need the mine blasting it is the only thing we have that will do that.

Also calptrap are worthless at this moment we need the flamers they are the most effective weapon against super heavies and frost magic.

I like the caltrops more, because sombra is a sorcerer powerful enough to target gigantic bombs in our formation with magic I fear.
And a basically zombified army is gonna be stopped or even hindered by caltraps?

Right. This.. is possibly the biggest tech advance we have seen yet. One of the three main technologies behind the industrial revolution, outright, no intermediate steps needed to improve it to something usable like the steam engine. this will increases our steel production more then a hundred fold. Not sure we can exploit this fact right now, being in the middle of the war, but we should pick this up ASAP once we have a free slot.

The shrooms are a more powerful weapon over any caltrops could ever be. The blast mining is also the way we get access to powerful explosives that we can use to blow up the army from below.

[X] Plan Militia, Yak, Firepower and bulwarks

This was a hard one... but honestly Sombra could just use magic to throw away the caltrops.

I chose caltrops because we know we can make them. I would rather have a for-sure addition to our defenses than two possible additions.
And a basically zombified army is gonna be stopped or even hindered by caltraps?
Even if they can't feel pain (which we don't know for sure in or out of character), it can and will screw up their feet.

Also calptrap are worthless at this moment we need the flamers they are the most effective weapon against super heavies and frost magic.
Firewood and hothouses are more pressing than potential military tunnels I think.

Stopped? no never. Slowed down though? Hopefully, they are after all horses and have double the chance of stepping on them.
This army will not slow down they will leave the wounded behind if not just march right through by sending the weakest one first to soak them all up. Also with out the blasting learned from mining use we lose the greatest advantage that the Diamond Dogs give us.

Whose to say sombra cant just cover or blow away said caltraps with his magic

Sadly, Sombra is not going to wait. He has no use for waiting, as his army is always ready. In a year, he'll cut deep into our territory, which is unacceptable.

I don't think anyone thinks of Sombra when using caltrops.
I mean, it would take at least balista bolts to even scratch his armor.

Unless you mean his magic clearing caltrops everywhere his troops are.
And that... is at most possible for troops under his direct command, I think.

Edit: Even if that was a global effect- magic takes magical energy. If he has any limits to his stamina, I imagine this kind of wide-reaching stunt would at least wind him a little.

by that logic, whose to say he can't just put out any fires we set?

Besides the caltrops are for slowing down his army. Not killing him.
