About the mutation aura, only the fact that nothing happened to Borek seems to come up recently but also remember that the trees/ environment aren't mutated more than normal either.

We already know what they think. They think that's Cor-dum, chaos worshipping beastmen, and every time we approach one of these groups it has been literally a d6 away from a fight or having n them join us which might honestly be worse.
We're an extremely slippery Wizard and I fancy our chances of cutting down a party of outriders if it comes down to it. We're fishing for any information we can get off them, but most especially we're fishing for whether their shamans can safely cast when battle is joined. I'm of the opinion that we ought to talk to these people, and if we get any answer other than 'casting is safe' we should channel our inner Mork and bash their 'eads in next time they make a run at the Beastmen, and hopefully the coin will get us some sort of positive result from the Kharak.

- If you have an idea for experiments that don't take long that involve no spellcasting, not leaving the fortified position, and not potentially starting a fight with the Beastmen, suggest them and I might edit in the results of Mathilde doing them.
Throwing a stone into the desert. Obviously it could be observed for a long time, and I assume would be if we stick around, but even 30 seconds will tell us whether or not the effect kicks in practically instantly on anything in-radius.

Honestly, I doubt the next quest will have anything to do with Warhammer at all.

Ultimately, no matter what we do, it's a risk. Approaching other tribes? Risk of them attacking us. Casting magic? Risk of turning into Chaos Spawn. Talking to Morghur? Same. Waiting? Little immediate risk, but if anything at all goes wrong, it'll sap morale as people hate waiting while terrible stuff happens to them.

Starting a fight with one of the other tribes is at least a fairly mundane risk that we're well-equipped to handle, what with heavily-armored extremely fast Demigryph Knights and armored wagons. It has fairly low risks for Mathy personally, and if a few people die fighting Chaos worshippers, the impact on morale should be minimal.

So this is why I'm in favour of talking to Kvellige.

Which effect? The translocation?
Presumably not, since there are still bones.
We haven't seen it affect any bones, we have seen it affect stone. It could well be that it only affects stone still in the ground, and won't affect a rock, but it could also be that if affects any of the natural stone of the area. It's a quick and easy test so I figured why not?

How are you planning to get letters to them?

[X] Fortify here and see if anything interesting happens over the next day
[X] Attempt to scout the forest at the base of the Karak
[X] Attempt to approach Morghur to see if he can be communicated with
-[x] Make a gift basket, fill it with some of Borek's belongings, give him his money back and what you owe him
-[x] Consult the dwarves on how to communicate with Karag Dum either with the banner or a symbol of peace and parley.
-[x] Ask Asarnil and some dwarves help, write letters in different languages to both Borek and Morghur, enclosed in the gift basket, the letters contain writings of Mathilde's tittles, her deeds to help the dwarfs, how the WE spiders were accepted, K8P was reclaimed, Congratulate Karag Dum for all their work in surviving the odds, and that their endurance is about to pay off, try to claim the life debt from saving Borek, Plead with him by writing about the sacrifices of Gortek and the engineers that died, by asking him to write back to you, ask him to continue his duty to Karag Dum, by cooperating with you to help reunite with K8P and the main dwarven capital, your willing to vouch for them with your accomplishments in helping dwarfkind, Karag Vlag has been rescued, despite the odds, and you need him to work with you to help Karag Dum, he should not give up yet, write to Morhur too, and write that you want to talk to him and help his people and Karag Dum, and if either the beastmen or Morghur can understand you please stick Mathilde's personal banner in the forest edge and place some plants near the desert.
-[x] Include in the gift basket some food and some dwarven weapons.
-[x] Carry the banner of K8P and Karag Dum or their equivalent of a symbol along with your personal banner and the gift basket, and maintain a safe distance (how far Morghur was from the expedition) between you and the beastmen, if either of beastmen approaches drop the basket and maintain safe distance and observe them. If they don't approach the basket , wait for them to leave than carry the basket up to near the forest or slightly inside it.

with the gift basket plan

If this hasn't been tested, sure. If the rock is still there after quite a while, then I guess we can assume the effect isn't actively maintaining the interior of the desert, merely occurring at the border in order to expand it outwards.
I'd also like to test what happens to an artificial object placed on the border.

[X] Approach the Kul camp peacefully and attempt to discuss the Karak with them
[X] Approach the Kvellige camp peacefully and attempt to discuss the Karak with them
[X] Fortify here and see if anything interesting happens over the next day

These all seem quite reasonable, assuming the food situation isn't terribly dire or anything like that.

[X] Attempt to intercept a Kurgan war-party en route to attack the Karag and the Beastmen
[X] Attempt to scout the forest at the base of the Karak

I'm a little iffy on these. The former because it's extremely Big Brain and the latter because I'm leery of running into Morghur or something. But I think they're valid picks with a reasonable level of risk.

[X] Ask for a volunteer to approach Morghur to see if he can be communicated with

No, listen, bear with me here:
There's basically no downside to this! There's probably like a 99% chance that no one volunteers, in which case this is entirely neutral, and if we do roll that Nat 100, we'll get some valuable information. Even if the unlucky volunteer gets turned into a Spawn, there's probably like a 50% chance it wanders off or attacks the Beastmen, making it Not Our Problem. And if it attacks us, I'm sure the dwarves will be able to shoot it before it causes any serious damage, right? Right?

We learn what we can without risking spawnhood and get out. Not every mystery can be solved in our lifetime or by us but we can at least take the first few steps.

Well there is the mental anguish of condeming someone to Spwanhood.

[X] Try throwing in a letter attached to a rock.

[X] Leave

The gift basket plan has us approach Morghur directly, presumably within close range, and, uh, I don't want to get within 10 feet of the being that turns whoever is closest to him into a Chaos Spawn when we still haven't ruled out him still being Morghur, am evil Beastman.

I don't actually think it is the real Morghur, but I don't wanna get physically near it until we know for sure.
