Between scouting and doing the heist now, I think it makes more sense to do the theft on our way out. So tentatively, my current proposed vote is:

[ ] Ranging far ahead of the convoy

The way I see it, ranging ahead is much less potentially rewarding than meeting the Yusak, plus we already have scouts.

If we meet the Yusak, it opens options.

If the Yusak are unalligned with chaos, we could try to bribe the Dolgan into attacking another tribe with us thus weakening both tribes and allowing the Yusak to swoop in once the fight is over (not very honorable but hey). Or we could simply try to ally to Yusak (to the risk of becoming hostile to all other tribes).

If the Yusak are unalligned with Chaos but down in favor with the Gods, we could gang up on them or something.

Anyway, If we go meet the Yusak we still get some reconnaissance since they are also ahead.

And Rite of Way is crucial, we don't have a chief engineer anymore if something goes wrong.

I've been -just barely- convinced.

We can probably acquire cows elsewhere before we starve if the Dolgan go back on their word right?
If the Dolgan fail we just spend all of the next turn contacting potential cow sources.
In fact I'm not 100% sure we shouldn't contact the Yusak at some point anyways, it might help to have nearby diplomacy if we want to either avoid attacks or potentially pull vulnerable refugees out of the area.

The Dolgan just outright explained to us a bunch of common knowledge about their area out of courtesy when we met last, if we could repeat that feat with the Yusak I think it would be quite a bit more enlightening information wise then ranging far ahead would. Even if they don't, the information we get from their reaction to us is still useful.

Wind Herder Project! Barrel of Ferment and Taste of Fire!

Taste of Fire requires Water to convert into an alcoholic beverage. Ferment can turn A Liquid("no matter how foul or brackish") into a light booze of choice (wine/ale/mead are given as examples in RoS). Taste of Fire can make something that's already alcoholic and bump it up to the potency of hard spirits.

Party in a can! Just gotta keep the spells from like lingering in the booze and dharring up, but hey that's windherder's problem! 🧙‍♂️ :whistle:

I wonder if could get strong enough to be used in an engine, maybe get a couple of barrels and have water in to power out.
 
Makes me wonder whether combining those two enchantments would give us the ability to use water for Gyrocopter fuel. -wait, are gyrocopters steam-powered, or are they alcohol-engine internal combustion? They have to be internal combustion right?

Steam with coked peat. Alcohol engines are currently bleeding-edge and a matter of much debate and division amongst the Engineers.

Hm! If we ever get that Gyrocopter that people were pondering about at one point, to try and kickflip into the sky with enchantments, I guess I have my pet project to try and scream into the void over :p.

Ranging far ahead is for threats that might come after us or the Knights. No tribe has constant surveillance of every gribbly or freaky magic incident that's wandering around/occurring in their territory. A super mutated Chimera isn't going to fly in a different direction because we know it's in the area, for example.

We'll amplify their effectiveness as well with Rite of Way for movement and Melkoth's to slow down those who would stumble across them and engage.

I agree that it's best to go for the chaos artifact when we're already running away as fast as we can manage.

... I'm stuck wondering between "[ ] Ranging far ahead of the convoy" and "[ ] Attempt to make contact with the Yusak".

Both would get us scouting information. The Yusak, we currently know very little about. ... Gah. But on the one hand, I don't know if I want to precisely make contact with them... on the other hand, I worry about adding in a "Scout into Yusak territory" as that's just one more thing to add to the pile of to-do list!

... BoneyM, if we're ranging far ahead of the convoy with the Knights of Taal's Fury, are we... not sure how to say this without being silly, so. Are we just going to be doing the equivalent of riding alongside the Knights, or are we going to be able to push further forward than the Knights would have gone on their own, or what?

Is the benefit of the "range far ahead" option to be the first to lay eyes on things, at the exact same time that the Knights of Taal's Fury do? Or would it also include improving the Knights' own performance, due to us being present? (Though, I don't know if we'd be using Rite of Way while with the Knights, so...)


As is, the only option I'm certain of is the "Make contact with the Dolgan" one. Because we need to buy their cattle (and ensorcell the cattle) and we were the ones who made contact with them first.

The Rite of Way one though... "The landscape itself isn't too bad, and the dry landscape should hold up fairly well under the steam-wagons, or at least better than they would if it had rained recently. Still, any time spent casting Rite of Way would speed up the Expedition." Well I mean. The way Mathilde put it, it actually sounded like it was okay ground anyway, and Rite of Way would just speed things along, so... Dunno. Just 1 casting of it maybe? Was wondering if we'd even need 1 at all, with how Mathilde was going "Eh, it hadn't rained, we don't really need this; it just makes things faster."

She doesn't seem worried about the steam-wagons... ... Then again, she isn't an engineer. Then again, that lack-of-being-an-engineer cuts both ways.

We are obligated to do this, so it's a when not if. Personally I think the risk we take by doing it now is outweighed by the risk of us not being with the convoy later

Similarly I'd like to try to buy food before knowledge of who we actually are spreads. Considering we KNOW the plotter has forces in the area I wouldn't gamble that our misdirection will hold up

The area is massive, it's simply impossible for Mathilde to cover a significant amount of it solo, especially when you consider how fast some of the monsters move, something 200+ miles away from the expeditions projected course could potentially travel that distance in less than a day.

Being able to get a general overview meanwhile will be more broadly applicable.

- These are the Kurgan that live directly south of Karag Dum, who are said to have lost the favour of the Gods and may be seeking to move further south.

If we take this and end up somehow saving their lives, and their having any amount of actual doubt about the Chaos gods ... considering the Protector is active I'm probably gonna vote to start preaching the word of Ranald on the spot.

Steal the Steppes from Chaos.

Ultimately, we'll just be one more person scouting. Useful, yes, but not as much as opening line of communication with a faction that "has lost favor of the Chaos Gods".

Mathilde will assist, rather than just being a ride-along. How this manifests depends on the problems they might face and the solutions Mathilde might be able to provide.

I ... guess we could do something like go back to pick up the right kind of dwarf expert on our shadowsteed once we're sure that the expedition is fine with and secure in their position?

No position is secure in this neck of the woods.
