I'm eventually inclined towards this:
[X] Run like hell
might change my vote later
If we do race back to the convoy maybe Illusion some "possible attack incoming" notes when we are close enough to be hard, since we will be reacting openly anyway?

Just an idea.

I do like the idea of the Hold actually having been switched in relative space via magic (and frozen in time too?), and this being kept up via the waystone. As that is (potentially) the least bad set of circumstances that come to mind.
It's possible that the king of the dwarfhold sallied to face chaos in combat, then went insane or fell to chaos and came back to his hold to activate their ancient 'hide from everyone else, the rest of the Karaz Ankor is doomed to fall' Runic defences.

The 'stone is an excellent insulator' could be a memetic defense specifically aimed at messing up non-dwarf magic users who think to try to pierce the defense(read: either chaos or elves from the war of vengeance). Under the assumption that a dwarf Runesmith of sufficient worthiness(read: reaching the dwarves unreasonable standards) would see through it instantly.

Thus the problem is that there could be dwarves who think the rest of the Karaz Ankor has fallen/who might have been there with centuries for a handful of corrupted individuals to work on the rest of them.

[X] Act normal

As interesting (or "interesting") as the "[ ] Stand your ground" option might be, Mathilde does not have protagonist immunity to death in this quest. Standing as close as possible to an unknown-but-almost-certainly-Chaos-related magic ritual that has been actively conducted with Major Waystone levels of power for 185 years and yelling "oh, you wanna try something huh?!" is a good way to start a new quest. As in, it could end this one in a hurry, assuming Boney didn't want to try to insert a new protagonist (which IIRC is what he's indicated in the past, unless I'm mistaken).

Anyway, there's two basic possibilities regarding how close of an eye the ritual-conducters are keeping on people coming up to look at the mountain. Either they aren't actively monitoring who comes up and tries to look at them, or they are and they know they successfully fooled Literally Teclis already. So either way, I think we've got quite good chances of successfully bluffing them, given that maintaining a poker face to conceal her actual level of knowledge is well within Mathilde's core competencies. And given she hasn't exactly been trumpeting her extraordinary Windsight to make it something anyone's likely to know about. We're not walking away from this, we're buying time to prepare a reaction instead of trying to spontaneously wing a response to a ritual that's been prepping for approaching two centuries.

The greatest magic user in the world has ever seen was killed by an assassin when he was busy with a big ritual. We might have the chance to do the same thing right now.
If we had a target to gank, my answer might be different. But we have a mountain. In lieu of something to stab, our disruption would necessarily take a more magical form, which brings me back to my point about magic dueling a Lord of Change.

If we had applicable counterspelling perks, I might vote differently, because there is a big something going on that we could hypothetically mess with. But we don't, we can't even see the thing we'd be disrupting, we have no target for assassination, and I'm not confident in our ability to disrupt the Chaos mountain.

My problem with leaving is... then what? Seriously, then what?

We go back and tell them, "A portal to hell might be about to open; it's power source is about a mile away. No, we don't know where the portal will open. No, we can't do anything to stop it from here. The power source is about a mile away and I stopped investigating so I don't know where it's going. No, I'm not even sure it's a portal. I stopped investigating. Just try to be alert. Stay frosty."

We act normal and then what?

[X] Stand your ground

This would normally be too dangerous to try, but we do have Asarnil, and since they have a nuke we want to attack before they have a chance to use it on their terms.

If Mathilde had died early on I would have pivoted to a new protagonist, but at this point it's definitely MathildeQuest and if she dies that's the end of it. I have the OP of the next quest already written and ready to go.

...If the option were instead labeled "Engage a Lord of Change in a magical duel," would you still pick it? Because I am struggling to imagine a world in which poking 200 years of Chaos-backed Waystone output being marshalled by something (which, let's be honest, probably is a Lord of Change) would be easier than that.
Using the Lord of Change example I'm looking at it like this:

A: Getting in a magical duel with a Lord of Change before they can complete/divert/whatever their Ritual, But with Dragon support.

B: Possibly getting in a Magical duel with a Lord of Change after they completed/diverted/whatever their ritual, But with Dragon support and Steamship support, EDIT: And other Wizards.

If I though this might be a Daemon of any other flavor than Tzeentch, I'd argue for: Act Casual and Get the Guns. But I just really don't want to give a Tzeentchian time to play with 185 (potential) cumulative years of Karak Juice.

@BoneyM if we choose to "stand ground" is there more investigation to be done? Can Mathilde keep trying to follow the flow of energy, pierce the mental effect, and figure out what's going on before the power is used? Basically, is "stand ground" synonymous with "keep investigating, get more information"?

Or would she just be calling the alert and hoping/not-hoping that something happens with no further path to investigate?

I'll admit, as much as I enjoy this quest, I've always been curious what your next idea is.

Out of curiosity, would you keep the worldbuilding? (I'm assuming that the quest wouldn't literally take place post-Mathilde)

[x] Stand your ground
- Snorri has a horn, you have Illusion to make the same sound except louder. Asarnil can be here within a couple of minutes, and the Knights soon after that. Stand your ground and see if you can disrupt anything that might happen.

if we do end up standing our ground we need to ask deathfang some questions and if one of his answers is "stone is a excellent insulator of magic" then whatever is in that mountain needs to die for being able to mind whammy a dragon born before the coming of the old ones(or however old he actually is).

what the new quest of mathlide die be about?

It'll be in the same setting, but that's all I'm sharing about it while this quest is still active.

She won't focus on investigating until everyone else gets there, because trying to see what's going on through that much stone (which is, after all, an excellent insulator) would take all her attention and would mean she won't be able to react as quickly if it starts doing something.

...If the option were instead labeled "Engage a Lord of Change in a magical duel," would you still pick it?
Given it implies the other two options are "allow a Lord of Change to engage you in a magical duel at a time of its choosing..."

Or perhaps, "give a Lord of Change more time and opportunity to attempt to get past your mental defenses unopposed."

ok, now wayyyyy more interested in run like hell.

that's ambush range.

like, now.

A very important point. But also one we dont have much to do about it.
Mostly its based about Mathilde being seen knowing or not.
Perhaps acting normal will buy time... or just make Mathiled late.
Perhaps standing ground will disrupt said ambush... or just divide the expedition.

I think its better to decide by the least worst case?
In run like hell worst case is sprouting the trap with Mathilde arriving near the expedition?
Something to think about. When I dont have enough information I prefer to decide based on what I don't want to see rather than what I hope I will see.
Thoughs? Worst case scenarios?

[X] Run like hell

'Open voting' is added automatically by the new vote system, and I want to leave 'quest' in for people using the tags to search for new things to read, but I've cleaned out a few of the less currently relevant ones.
Not sure why you are keeping 'female protagonist'.
Of all the many, many things that define Mathilde, being female is perhaps the least important.

[X] Act normal
- There might be unfriendly eyes on you. Pretend you didn't see anything and return to the Expedition as normal, and decide what to do from there.
